Question of the day

Saturday, Jun 24, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* We’ll get to the rest of this Sneed column tomorrow, so let’s just focus on this today

(H)ow does Madigan handle stress?

“He handles it with . . . experience,” said Steve Brown, Madigan’s spokesman.

“Sure, there’s stress. But he always handles the rigors of the day by exercising on a regular basis. He keeps a stationary bike in his apartment in Springfield, just like he does at home. He has always had a very health-oriented diet. Chicken and fish. That sort of thing.

“Besides that, he does not go into a panic when someone on television lobs criticism at him!”

* The Question: How do you think Speaker Madigan “really” handles stress? Be creative, but follow the rules.

Not sure, but I’ve always suspected he handles stress by developing elaborate revenge schemes.

  2. - Flip357 - Saturday, Jun 24, 17 @ 12:36 pm:

He performs routine maintenance on the clocks in the Capitol Building.

  3. - Oswego Willy - Saturday, Jun 24, 17 @ 12:40 pm:

Sneedless to say, me thinks Mike Madigan doesn’t stress eat apples at O’Brien’s with the powerful Revenue Chairman Edward Burke and his priceless and ageless Justice Anne Burke, or even gets too far over the moon by dining with Jay Doherty.

    Natch.

  4. - Captain Ed Smith - Saturday, Jun 24, 17 @ 12:42 pm:

Steers clear of social media and doesn’t read the papers.

  5. - Rabid - Saturday, Jun 24, 17 @ 12:47 pm:

Mike is old enough not to have a knee jerk reaction, he who acts first loses. I don’t get stress, I give it

  6. - Oswego Willy - Saturday, Jun 24, 17 @ 12:47 pm:

    Workin’ it.

You think inventing Illinois’ Powerful Speaker of the House Mike Madigan and Illinois’ rascal governor to break bread would call both parties. They are a “don’t invite ‘em” item.

You think the two Illinois leaders meeting again this week will be a calming moment?

    Don’t bet on it.

  7. - Oswego Willy - Saturday, Jun 24, 17 @ 12:50 pm:

    Madigan Moves to Music?

    To wit;

    * Speaker Madigan hates stress in his life

    * Madigan will resort to doing moves to music

    * Madigan’s preferred music to dance stress away? Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, coping every move of the King of Pop

It’s been said Mike Madigan dances to his own tune. I guess it’s more true than we think.

    Mike’s Moves?

Mike Madigan loves to practice Yoga when down in Springpatch

Upshot: Madigan’s flexibility has increased dramatically

Downshot: Madigan’s favorite pose? Downward Dog

Backshot: Madigan’s rarely talked about back pains have disappeared.

Buckshot: Madigan teaches a class now every Tuesday, donating that money back to the Yoga studio.

    Got that?

  13. - Macbeth - Saturday, Jun 24, 17 @ 1:06 pm:

I think Madigan is a smart guy. I like Madigan. I hope he sticks to his guns and does what he thinks is best.

Rauner is not as smart. This is an issue for Rauner — not Madigan.

  14. - Bruce ( no not him) - Saturday, Jun 24, 17 @ 1:11 pm:

I don’t think this stressful to him. He lives for this. Plotting his next move.

Oh boy the rest of that column … Sneed is absolutely useless.

  18. - cdog - Saturday, Jun 24, 17 @ 1:52 pm:

while peddling he recites his daily affirmation, “not my monkey, not my circus. not my monkey, not my circus…”

real talk. Take away the man’s bike, his apple, and his blankie. He needs to feel a little stress and act like he cares about Illinois.

He reads the Bible. No, not that one. The one he wrote.

  27. - Anonymous - Saturday, Jun 24, 17 @ 2:53 pm:

He loves the game of politics. Some people exercise , golf, go to the pub , vacation with family at the beach house, not him. Power is his drug of choice. It is his love. I bet he is up early every Saturday and Sunday morning at his office by 6am. Work work work work work. Enough power and money will never be enough. It’s a obsession with control. His own daughter can not go to higher office unless he says so. It’s all about control and controlling others in a quiet manner. Very quiet.

  28. - Stark - Saturday, Jun 24, 17 @ 2:56 pm:

    One finely sliced apple.

  29. - 47th Ward - Saturday, Jun 24, 17 @ 3:10 pm:

Stress? Mike Madigan has never heard of it.

    Mike Madigan gives stress ulcers.

Mike Madigan uses diamonds as stress balls.

Only people who give a (deleted) get stressed. Mike Madigan doesn’t give a (deleted).

  30. - wordslinger - Saturday, Jun 24, 17 @ 3:17 pm:

–A lot of laughing at Rauner and his hapless crew I would imagine.–

    Sigh.

You’re crazy if you don’t see that they’ve been getting all that they want that they can.

  31. - Oswego Willy - Saturday, Jun 24, 17 @ 3:52 pm:

Speaker Madigan deals with stress via “routine”

That’s why Rauner could be such a stressful person to him.

But, Madigan is wiley. The ooda loops are a routine occurance, along with the Word Jumble, Ken Dunkin, Dan Proft, Kristen McQueary, Goldberg’s memos…

The routine of all those, meh, has become old hat.

You get Rauner to comprises, the Word Jumble to praise Madigan’s help, Ken Dunkin apologizing, McQueary writing something knowledgeable and thoughtful, Proft becoming moderate to help governing, and Goldberg writing thank you notes for Dem support… Madigan will lose his… apples.

  32. - Welcome Back Kotter - Saturday, Jun 24, 17 @ 3:57 pm:

Michael Madigan deals with stress by relaxing and revising the Election Code to make ballot access more and more difficult. Petition signature minimums soar as the Speaker dreams of elections with no contested incumbents,

  33. - BIG R.Ph. - Saturday, Jun 24, 17 @ 4:22 pm:

He watches “House of Cards” over and over and over looking for inspiration from Frank Underwood.

  34. - Oswego Willy - Saturday, Jun 24, 17 @ 4:36 pm:

    ===He watches “House of Cards”…===

    What?! Seriously?!

I sent over the “Dad’s Home State” box set with the director’s commentary track.

This is a very disappointing piece of news.

  39. - NorthsideNoMore - Saturday, Jun 24, 17 @ 8:57 pm:

Speaker has nothing to stress about, until November of 18 and maybe not even then. His caucus wont get out of line he knows it so do they.

  40. - Democratic Grrrl - Saturday, Jun 24, 17 @ 9:58 pm:
