New approval numbers are out comparing the most and least popular governors around the country. The Morning Consults Governor Approval Rankings show Governor Bruce Rauner near the bottom of the list.
Rauner ranks fifth worst as most voters say they disapprove of his performance over the last two years in office. The survey asked more than 250,000 registered voters nationwide.
With his re-election underway inching closer to 2018, he will want to change some minds. The survey shows Rauner suffered a 16-point net loss, with 30% of voters approving of his performance and 55% giving him the thumb’s down.
People were surveyed from July to September, so even after the state passed a budget, many are still not pleased with how Rauner continues to govern.
July through September? That makes for some pretty old results.
More info is here. It’s difficult to figure out exactly what this firm’s methodology is, so I’d advise a bit of caution.
* The firm did provide me these results…
I was told there are no crosstabs available…
The n size for Illinois is 11,177 with a margin of error of +/- 1%

Wow, those other four must be really bad.
- Actual Red - Friday, Nov 3, 17 @ 2:58 pm:
Rauner has got to be thankful for Chris Christie for making him look down right beloved by comparison.
- wordslinger - Friday, Nov 3, 17 @ 2:58 pm:
I can’t speak to the poll, but when your own campaign takes down your “Accomplishments” page, you might have some trouble selling yourself to the public.
What, exactly, are people supposed to be “approving” of?

His “persistence”, his “tenacity”, his “fight”, his not being “Mike Madigan.”
Those four things — that’s about it.
But given the wackadoodle political climate these days, that’s more than enough.
- Norseman - Friday, Nov 3, 17 @ 3:03 pm:
Congrats Rauner. You did better than expected. I wast thinking you and Christie would be battling for 1 and 2.
- Oswego Willy - Friday, Nov 3, 17 @ 3:05 pm:
The 30% approval is far worse than 55% disapproval, and that’s how bad that is.
Even other governors say Illinois is worst with Rauner as governor.

The “30-55” seems to disagree

Congrats GovJUnk you should be leading the nation

Until they stand at the voting booth, stare down at the ballot, and then slowly fill in the Rauner circle.
Hey, I’m in the 55 camp, believe me. But as we’ve learned recently — polls don’t mean much. The dark circles on the ballots do.
- illini - Friday, Nov 3, 17 @ 3:15 pm:
Besides Chris Christie who are those other unfortunate Governors?
- Gooner - Friday, Nov 3, 17 @ 3:18 pm:
Rauner is going to do worse against a generic opponent than against a real one. Also, I suspect the Ives people are going to come home.
He’s in trouble, but a year out given his track record 45% not opposed to him isn’t bad.

I’d guess Paul Lepage from main. He is the only current governor I would take Rauner over. Imagine a governor with the governing skills of Bruce Rauner, the off the wall conspiracy theories of Donald Trump and an IQ of a cabbage.
- IllinoisBoi - Friday, Nov 3, 17 @ 3:23 pm:
The five most unpopular governors:
1. Chris Christie (R-NJ)
2. Dan Malloy (D-CT)
3. Sam Brownback (R-KS)
4. Mary Fallin (R-OK)
5. Bruce Rauner (R-IL)
Christie’s numbers are 77% disapprove, 18% approve.

1 Christie R-NJ
2 Malloy D-CT
3 Brownback R-KS
4 Fallin R-OK
5 Rauner R-IL
6 Martinez R-NM
7 LePage R-ME
8 Snyder R-MI
9 S. Walker R-WI
10 B. Walker I-AK
- wordslinger - Friday, Nov 3, 17 @ 3:32 pm:
Geez, Snyder is “more popular” and he has people from his administration charged with felonies for deaths from poison water.

That’s how Morning Consult rolls, as some of us pointed out last time we covered them and they seemed to show Rauner on the rebound.
- illini - Friday, Nov 3, 17 @ 3:39 pm:
So in the Top 10 we have 8 R’s, 1 D and 1 I - is there a pattern here?
- Lucky Pierre - Friday, Nov 3, 17 @ 3:40 pm:
The Governor trailing Dick Durbin by 7 points in approval.? Big surprise
Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight who aggregates all polls gave Pat Quinn an 18% chance of beating Bill Brady and gave Pat Quinn a 66% chance of beating Governor Rauner a week before the election
So take these polls with a grain of salt. They are meaningless a week before the election and certainly a year before one.

The pattern I see is there are only 15 Democratic Governors in the US

- Oswego Willy - Friday, Nov 3, 17 @ 3:45 pm:
Oh - Lucky Pierre -
As a Chocagoan not voting in GOP primaries, Rauner without a mere 30% approval as an incumbent has Rauner toxic.
Where o where are the Comptroller and Treasurer willing to run with Rauner… LOL
- illini - Friday, Nov 3, 17 @ 3:57 pm:
@Willy - maybe Jason missed two opportunities here.
After all he is a UIUC graduate ( I’m not bragging on that ), is a Reserve Officer in Navy Intelligence, and has a wealth of experience from having run state-wide and is a “successful” businessman. Almost seems like Comptroller or Treasurer would be a natural fit for him.
- Ron - Friday, Nov 3, 17 @ 3:58 pm:
“They are meaningless a week before the election and certainly a year before one.”
No polls are not meaningless. That is Trump talk. The vast majority of polling is very accurate.
- Pundent - Friday, Nov 3, 17 @ 3:59 pm:
Lucky Pierre - Are you suggesting that we’ve vastly underestimated the governors popularity?
- Keyrock - Friday, Nov 3, 17 @ 3:59 pm:
5th? We have to work harder, Illinois. We should be #1.
- Joe Bidenopolous - Friday, Nov 3, 17 @ 4:10 pm:
1 Christie R-NJ
2 Malloy D-CT
3 Brownback R-KS
4 Fallin R-OK
5 Rauner R-IL
Brownback had his confirmation hearing this week. If Colyer proves more popular (not a given), Rauner can move up to #4 (exclamation point)
- Lucky Pierre - Friday, Nov 3, 17 @ 4:22 pm:
What I am saying is JB and Speaker Madigan are running on the 2nd most unpopular Governor- CT Governor Dan Malloy’s platform.
Record tax increases and a hostile business environment that’s chasing great companies like GE out of state leads to terrible approval ratings.
Illinois has a lot in common with CT unfortunately with stagnant population growth because it is too expensive to live there and there is higher unemployment
- Oswego Willy - Friday, Nov 3, 17 @ 4:29 pm:
=== ..,are running on the 2nd most unpopular Governor- CT Governor Dan Malloy’s platform===
Connecticut isn’t Illinois.
In Illinois, Rauner, a mere 30% approve of his job.
===Record tax increases and a hostile business environment that’s chasing great companies like GE out of state leads to terrible approval ratings.===
Bruce Rauner failed, that’s for sure.
Oh, that CT governor, is also an incumbent.
Incumbents own their records, and Rauner is failing.
That 30% approval seems to say that? l
- Pundent - Friday, Nov 3, 17 @ 4:29 pm:
=What I am saying is JB and Speaker Madigan are running on the 2nd most unpopular Governor- CT Governor Dan Malloy’s platform.=
Oh I get it. The campaign strategy is going to evolve from “but Madigan” to “but Malloy”.
BTW - You might want to look at the most recent quarter and the inner turmoil plaguing that “great company” GE that was chased away from CT.
Your comments, as always, deflect and make no sense. Rauner’s popularity is in the tank and it doesn’t get any better by claiming that he’s the antidote to Madigan, Pritzker, or Malloy.
