Biss, interrupted

Wednesday, Jan 24, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* One of the things I noticed during the Democratic gubernatorial forum last night was the number of times moderator Carol Marin cut off Sen. Daniel Biss. Let it play out all the way to the end because this is one of the funnier videos I’ve seen in a while

She really did cut him off an incredible number of times. It was a little baffling, given that JB would usually get one warning that he would just talk over for 30 more seconds.

  2. - Shytown - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 2:06 pm:

No one can say that he’s ever shied away from the sound of his own voice…

  3. - Because I said so.... - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 2:06 pm:

Maybe Biss seems like a guy you can push around?

  4. - Honeslty - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 2:07 pm:

He talks with a bunch of fluff. Answer the question without all of the lengthy intros and picture painting.

  5. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 2:11 pm:

What a surprise that a math professor is boring.

  6. - Conn Smythe - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 2:11 pm:

She seemed to have a short fuse for DB.

  7. - Anon - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 2:15 pm:

    ouch.

  8. - InvolvedMillennial - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 2:15 pm:

This is the greatest political debate video I have ever seen.
“Shorter answer than that Mr. Biss”

  9. - HELP! - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 2:16 pm:

I didn’t keep count, but it seemed like Marin cut off all of the candidates whenever they weren’t answering the given question.

And perhaps more than the others, Biss seemed all too eager to go start what sounded like his prepared scripts.

Though I found myself leaning toward Kennedy, all in all, the candidates made me appreciate Pat Quinn.

  10. - DarkHorse - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 2:17 pm:

While I like Biss, I wonder if Marin’s cutting him off reflects that his professorial style turns people off - which if true, is a poor omen for him.

  11. - Just Visiting - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 2:17 pm:

    What’s that?

Hilarious close to that video. Well done whomever edited that.

  12. - Kyle Hillman - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 2:19 pm:

TV is different. They want sound bytes not explanations. He has to get better, but the issues they are talking about criminal justice reform, pensions, tax reform - those aren’t sound byte issues.

Why I hate these debates - winners are often the people who least understand the issue but who have quick witty rehearsed lines.

  13. - yo - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 2:21 pm:

He was way, way too wordy. Less is more. Being too wordy also made him seem smarmy. Just the facts, sir.

  14. - Western Union - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 2:23 pm:

Sometimes the professorial style doesn’t work. Biss is not getting the same slack that was given to Obama and he ought to be smart enough to know to keep it short and simple.

  15. - Roman - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 2:30 pm:

I’m a big fan of Carol Marin’s and she was in a really tough position last night with so many candidates and so little time. But I got aggravated with how often she cut candidates off — and it wasn’t just Biss.

She should have let JB and Biss go after each other much longer and more often than she did…that was the most interesting part of the debate and she cut it short. C’mon, who cares if Robert Marshall doesn’t get equal time?

  16. - Responsa - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 2:31 pm:

Carol had clearly set down the debate ground rules and obviously wanted to get short answers to very specifically worded questions, not more talking points. All of us watching and those on stage knew she was going for a non-bloviating “speed dating” type format. All the candidates tried to stretch it–they’re politicians after all. But Biss seemed to stray the most into non-answers. At least Carol must have thought that.

  17. - A State Employee Guy - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 2:32 pm:

    That headline deserves more respect.

  18. - DuPage Bard - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 2:34 pm:

Too many candidates on the stage for a 1 hour debate. You can’t get real explanations out of anyone when your answer has to be a quick sound deal.
Agree with earlier comment- you have to have one sentence quick responses with this many folks on stage. You can’t go into giant story telling explanations this isn’t the Township candidate forum set.

  19. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 2:39 pm:

If only anyone ever handled Rauner like that.

  20. - A guy - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 2:51 pm:

Can’t stand her. For a lot of reasons. But, this display laid out like this really heightens the awareness of her snippiness. Wordy or not, he’s a guest, like the others. I realized this when I was watching. But this really highlights it. She thinks she’s the show. Like the Referees who think you come to the game to see them. Obnoxious.

  21. - prairiestatedem - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 2:54 pm:

Guess the theater coaching with the hand gestures and overly dramatic pauses didn’t prepare him for that

  22. - Anon0091 - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 3:32 pm:

That is too funny. Sorry professor, TV is way less forgiving than the classroom or legislature.

  23. - We'll See - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 3:34 pm:

Me thinks Carol Marin has copied/ripped off my wife’s knack of controlling a discussion.

  24. - Cheryl44 - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 3:40 pm:

I didn’t realize how many Dems were running until I saw the lineup.

  25. - BucknIrish - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 3:51 pm:

The amount of times I wish I had a Carol Marin with me in college stopping professors from blowing smoke up their own A*$

  26. - Randy Jackson - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 4:01 pm:

Please someone with video editing skills add the theme song to Curb Your Enthusiasim to the end of this vid with a tag line “Produced by Carol Marin”

  27. - Dan23 - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 4:47 pm:

From what I saw last night, Biss got picked on by Marin because he refused on almost every question to just answer it.

  28. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 7:17 pm:

    That video is HILARIOUS.

And I personally enjoy listening to Biss talk.

But we whould all buy the editor of that video a drink.

  29. - Korn Fed - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 7:36 pm:

Hahahaha ,,, Reminds me of “Thank you Mr. Data”

  30. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 8:06 pm:

I don’t get to smile at much at Illinois and federal politics, so this was treat—so funny

  31. - Blue dog dem - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 8:29 pm:

I personally asked Biss his thoughts on the second amendment. After what seemed like an hour, I cut him off.

  32. - Blue dog dem - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 9:32 pm:

Just reading some Biss tweets at 7:33. Like Trump, somebody needs to filter him.

  33. - Union Thug Gramma - Wednesday, Jan 24, 18 @ 10:24 pm:

OK, the video edit looks one way, but really? He was the only candidate that took time to introduce his family, his WHOLE family, instead of the question that was asked of him.

  34. - Honeybear - Thursday, Jan 25, 18 @ 5:29 am:

She was on him like a rat on a cheetoh.
