Today’s mail: Fritchey hit on ketchup, polluters, pirates

Monday, Mar 12, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* A couple of recent Bridget Degnen mailers slamming Cook County Commissioner John Fritchey. As a reminder, Fritchey sent out a mailer during his losing 2009 congressional special election bid announcing that he liked ketchup on hot dogs, and the much-hated Lincoln Park Towing company could have its license taken away by the state soon…

Those could be the most Chicago mailers ever.

* Meanwhile, Fritchey has a new cable TV ad

…Adding… Fritchey’s campaign sent me one of his pieces. According to the Ledger, she was a “Senior Public Service Administrator” from 12/2016 through 1/2018…

    Restaurant quality mailers there

  2. - Grand Avenue - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 9:20 am:

The unions blame John Fritchey and Richard Boykin for the pop tax being overturned and their spending a combined $500,000 to beat them.

Boykin will be fine because it’s darn-near impossible for a black incumbent to lose. Fritchey I’m not so sure.

  3. - 47th Ward - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 9:22 am:

Ketchup is bad enough, but please don’t tell me John Fritchey uses a knife and fork to eat a hot dog.

  4. - wordslinger - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 9:26 am:

Ketchup on hot dogs, deep dish pizza, dibs, Da Bears….

Just hackneyed and lazy. As representative of Chicago as Jim Belushi.

  5. - City Zen - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 9:26 am:

“I am eating my hot dog with a knife and fork. How do you eat it? With your hands?”

  6. - Gooner - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 9:27 am:

John is in a strange position. He’s a Democrat who generally tows the line on issues but he’s also got a district that includes some high income/fiscally conservative voters.

He’s got a lot of appeal to those voters, but the overall base remains to the left.

The groups that ordinarily would provide funding for candidates like him really cannot do so in Dem primary, since their presence would turn into more mailers against him.

The Democratic Party needs more like him, but I’m not confident he can hold in a primary against a union-backed opponent.

  7. - PJ - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 9:35 am:

I like Fritchey but even I had a visceral reaction to him lobbying for Lincoln Towing. Those people are the literal scum of the earth, and you won’t find a car-owning Chicagoan who disagrees.

  8. - lake county democrat - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 9:38 am:

Dumb to bring up ketchup on a hot dog: I know more Chicagoans who think the non-ketchup thing is stupid and insulting than those who think it’s a matter of civic pride. Better to have gone all-in with Lincoln Towing.

Though I spar with him a little on twitter, I like John Fritchey - he’s accessible to the media and voters, thinks creatively, shows real passion on some issues, and generally votes responsibly. In contrast I looked at Degnen’s website and her suggestions for dealing with the city’s budget deficit aren’t serious.

  9. - Ron - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 9:46 am:

Fritchey is one of the few looking out for taxpayers.

  10. - Montrose - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 9:46 am:

The ketchup thing humanizes him and is much more memorable that the lobbying for the towing company. That is not what you are going for in an attack ad.

  11. - Ron - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 9:55 am:

Wait so Degnen is being backed by the Cook County unions? I thought something seemed off with her campaign.

  12. - Grand Avenue - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 9:56 am:

The hot dog ad is terrible - seeing a hot dog touching money makes me want to throw up.

  13. - Jack Kemp - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 9:56 am:

I don’t know much about Fritchey, but ketchup on hotdogs is an abomination.

  14. - City Zen - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 10:05 am:

==Wait so Degnen is being backed by the Cook County unions?==

It’s the unions vs the beverage industry (Citizens for a More Affordable Cook County…read “no soda tax”). This is pretty much the same story in the other county commissioner races. Which side will you choose?

  15. - regnaD kciN - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 10:33 am:

I haven’t had a hot dog in years but when I did eat them, I put ketchup on them. I also don’t eat horseshoes. Maybe I shouldn’t live in this state.

  16. - Boone's is Back - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 10:43 am:

Would love to hear how Degnen would be VOTING differently than Fritchey rather than what she would be eating differently.

  17. - Chicagoan - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 11:23 am:

We live & vote in the Fritchey District & Bridget Degnen’s hit pieces on Fritchey are generally being talked about as “over-the-top” and “too nasty.” The women I’ve been talking to are turned-off by Degnen’s attacks & a few have even said “that’s because she’s really a Republican.” I think this will be a very close race next Tuesday.

  18. - How about this one? - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 11:34 am:

It may be time for Fritchey to go into private practice and work full time. Unfair attacks on Bridget being a Rauner person is a weak argument. Many dems were left in place in Rauner’s administration, doesn’t make them all evil or Republican.

  19. - Ron - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 1:06 pm:

Degnen is sounding worse and worse. Glad I voted for Fritchey already.

  20. - Amalia - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 1:53 pm:

Fritchey commercial boasting how he is the most active member of the County Board. weird.

  21. - Graybeard - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 2:05 pm:

I’ve seen Fritchey a few times during this race. He hasn’t looked this scared in a long time. You can see the fear and desperation in his eyes and sense it in his voice. He finally has a real opponent, and she’s giving him all he can handle.

  22. - Ron - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 3:23 pm:

Cook County needs lower taxes. Fritchey has been good for taxpayers generally.

  23. - Lincoln Towing - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 3:48 pm:

Anyone who is a paid lobbyist for Lincoln Towing should never ever be considered a legitimate candidate let alone a sitting commissioner

  24. - C'mon - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 4:33 pm:

As a lifelong Dem, I have a real problem with the fact that Degnen failed to vote in all but one Dem primary in over 12 years. To me, this shows a significant lack of engagement - which is of concern to me when it comes to someone looking to represent me at any level of government.

  25. - Best Mom Ever - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 5:16 pm:

Wow. The Lincoln towing thing is a real issue. Those thugs have been running a racket for years. Does he really work for them?

  26. - Truthteller - Monday, Mar 12, 18 @ 7:41 pm:

I’ll vote for Degnen, but I’m taking my bumper sticker off the car.
Don’t want Fritchey towing me. A pop tax would cost me less than a tow
