Rate the new anti-Quinn ad
Tuesday, Mar 13, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller * As I told you yesterday, the Fight Back for a Better Tomorrow PAC, which is administered by top officials at Operating Engineers Local 150, filed a B-1 for $675,000 in spending on a TV ad attacking Pat Quinn. As subscribers know, there was a bit of a glitch with the spot, but it’s fixed now. Have a look… My own opinion is that this ad isn’t tough enough to move numbers. But, hey, I could be wrong. Let us know what you think.

The problem with the Harold Washington clip is that it helps with black voters as much as it hurts, because it showed that Harold did hire him and Pat worked in his administration.
Sure he got fired for incompetence, but the fact that he worked for Harold ahows that he was on Harold Washington’s side during the racial Council Wars of the 1980s
- TominChicago - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 10:22 am:
Too little, too late. He’s first on the ballot in a crowded election with name recognition.
- Iggy - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 10:26 am:
Good hits on PQ, but yeah too late to make a difference. Also if you are a Dem primary voter and this commercial speaks to you, who do you go to next? I don’t think Kwame is probably your number 2 choice.
- truth - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 10:31 am:
NRI attacks, huh?
I seem to remember a certain state senator calling the investigation into NRI a “witch hunt” back in 2014. Oh right, that was Kwame Raoul.

Good stuff. But it should have started weeks ago. They let him sit on top for too long without reminding voters why they hate him.
- Ron Burgundy - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 10:37 am:
Agree it doesn’t hit hard enough.
- A guy - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 10:43 am:
I’m kinda with you on this one. If you’re gonna smack him; make him reel and wobble. This doesn’t do this. Amidst the white noise now, it’s a glancing blow. It’ll get lost in the shuffle of the rest of the real bare knuckled stuff. The hit is a little too complicated to get a quick read.
- Jack Kemp - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 10:44 am:
Two words:
“Boom. Roasted.”
- Blimp - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 10:45 am:
I early voted for him.
- Annoin' - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 10:46 am:
Should be enough to remind all Ds what will be in store if PQ on ticket in November. Impact will go way beyond African American voters.
- Mighty M. Mouse - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 10:48 am:
The ad amounts to a sentence of ten lashes for Pat Quinn — with a wet noodle. It’s the same old, same old: no arrests, no convictions, and no multiple deaths, such as from Legionaire’s disease. The ad strains to blow some old news out of proportion but heck, it’s all they got. It’s not going to change a lot of minds about a person who is already extremely well known.
- Henry Francis - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 10:52 am:
“Ousted under a cloud of corruption”?
I don’t know. Me personally, I don’t think corruption is PQ’s biggest shortcoming. He’s been the least corrupt Guv wev’e had this millennium.
If I were to hit PQ, I would hit him on competence. We voted you out of office just 4 years ago, why would we want to vote you back into another office?
- Under Influenced - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 10:53 am:
It’s a “targeted” ad at a specific demographic. This is about margins my friends.
Voice over is spot-on!
- Flapdoodle - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 10:56 am:
As a Dem, the AG primary gives me the most trouble in choosing — really just not a lot there
- Oh, please! - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 10:59 am:
D minus. Time has proven Raoul right about one thing — the trumped up NRI “investigations” were political witch hunting at its worst.
Rauner has completely neglected the fight against violence.
Quinn is owed an apology by the Republicans on NRI.
And the Harold clip is just old and ineffective.
Sorry DC consultants. Just doing Rauner’s recycled attacks.
- DarkHorse - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 11:15 am:
Raoul and his allies have spent alot of money, and he’s only at 15%, according to CapFax poll? To me, this says there is something wrong with Raoul’s approach and I don’t think this ad addresses it. They’d be better coming up with some new, positive argument for Raoul.
- Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 11:35 am:
It’s a little busy. Of course there is plenty to dump on Umcle Squeezy, but so little time.
- Cindy Lou - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 11:38 am:
I cast my votes last Saturday, so doesn’t matter to me what is said and shown from then on out. I didn’t vote for Quinn, but if I had been going to, this ad would not have changed my mind.
I’m surprised to see on the poll given yesterday here that there are still so many ‘undecided’. But than, I suppose some of these very late ads may have work to move some voters into a final decision.
- State worker - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 11:49 am:
There’s some people who would be persuaded by this. And they would not already be voting for Raoul because…they haven’t heard of him? They can’t decide between him and Quinn? It seems like this will help Raoul for the latter group. How many is that?
- Practical Politics - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 12:09 pm:
Excellent attack ad (A-), but terrible timing (D+). It should have been broadcast two weeks earlier and kept in rotation.
- Just Me - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 12:20 pm:
Fax Machine - you’re asking voters to remember a lot. Also, the council wars were over twenty years ago, and a significant number voters weren’t even old enough to be aware of them.
- wordslinger - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 12:22 pm:
A “criminal probe” and a “federal inquiry?” Is that like both kinds of music, “country” and “western?”
This seems like a quick-and-dirty whack at Quinn that somehow is supposed to resonate with black voters.
I don’t get the motivation, really, but I’m pretty sure that it would take a lot more time and money to sell Quinn as “corrupt.”
- Bobio - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 1:25 pm:
Quinn needs to hit back with a, why is Madigan attacking me and backing the other guy ad? and wrap this thing up.
- Bobio - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 2:43 pm:
I decided to write an ad for Quinn.
Why did Mike Madigan order his political pac to spend 700k to attack Pat Quinn? Because he needs his hand picked puppet Kwame Raul to keep him in control of our State. IL can’tafford Madigan anymore. We need an independent Attorney General. Pat Quinn is on our side blah, blah blah.
That should do it. Not very unifying but after this last ad, well deserved.
- zatoichi - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 4:58 pm:
Blago got ‘ousted’ before his term was up. Quinn got beat in an election and at least finished.
