Pritzker launches closing ad

Thursday, Mar 15, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Press release…

Today, the JB Pritzker campaign released a new statewide TV ad: “Together.” The ad highlights Bruce Rauner’s failures as governor and JB’s plans to take charge, unite the state, and bring real change to Illinois.

“From manufacturing a 736-day budget crisis, to conducting corrupt business deals out of the governor’s mansion and fatally mismanaging the Quincy Veterans’ home, it’s clear that Bruce Rauner has failed Illinois,” said JB Pritzker. “From day one of this campaign, I’ve focused on holding Rauner accountable for his damage done and fighting for the issues that matter to working families. Illinoisans deserve a leader in Springfield who will take charge to create jobs, expand quality healthcare, and invest in education across the board. I am the only candidate in this race with the vision and leadership to defeat Bruce Rauner and move this state forward.”

* The ad

* Script

Anchor: Tumultuous first term for Governor Rauner.

Anchor: 700 days without a budget.

Anchor: Meetings about private investments at the executive mansion.

Anchor: Lowest credit rating of any state in American history.

Anchor: Fatal outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease.

Rauner: I am not in charge.

Pritzker: Bruce Rauner is a failure and the communities he’s hurt most are the ones who can least afford it. I’ll work hard every day to earn you trust, and when we beat Bruce Ruaner, together, we’ll bring real change to Illinois.

Thoughts?

OW, I guess this is the closest we’re getting to “blind trust, broken trust.”

  2. - Moe Berg - Thursday, Mar 15, 18 @ 10:33 am:

It’s good. It’s looking forward. And, it hits the key point that Rauner’s record after 3+ years is a total disaster. He is a failure. No amount of mudslinging he’ll do against Pritzker is going to save him from that painful reality in a blue state with an energized Dem electorate, no matter how much money he spends.

  3. - wordslinger - Thursday, Mar 15, 18 @ 10:33 am:

“I am not in charge,” will be the one thing Rauner is remembered for long after he’s out of office. What a gift.

To the spot, it was wise to just hammer Rauner and ignore the primary opponents. Beating Rauner is something all likely Dem primary voters want, obviously.

  4. - hisgirlfriday - Thursday, Mar 15, 18 @ 10:38 am:

Making Dem voters think he is best positioned to attack Rauner is the right card to play.

Here’s hoping he is even more ferocious on attack after getting the nom.

Still waiting on that ad hitting Bruce for his medical marijuana cruel and frivolous lawsuits against patients, Team JB.

    This is a great ad.

  6. - Anonymous - Thursday, Mar 15, 18 @ 10:39 am:

    pritzker is the worst candidate

  7. - Anonymous - Thursday, Mar 15, 18 @ 10:39 am:

Good closer, going after Rauner to close is smarter move.

  8. - Rabid - Thursday, Mar 15, 18 @ 10:41 am:

    This works for Ives too

  9. - huh - Thursday, Mar 15, 18 @ 10:42 am:

Agree with wordslinger. I think that’s the unifying message. “I will beat Rauner.”

Rauner’s message is “I will beat Madigan” - just like he has the last four years?

  10. - One hand //ing - Thursday, Mar 15, 18 @ 10:44 am:

“I’ll work every day to earn your trust.”

Spot on appeal to undecided voters. Undecideds don’t know who to trust. J.B. is going to show not tell.

  11. - MG85 - Thursday, Mar 15, 18 @ 11:10 am:

Illinois Democrats want a winner. Watching this ad makes me remember what the race is really about and it is about beating the “worst Republican Governor in America” which equals for Democrats the “worst Governor in America.

This a great closer. It follows the trusted playbook of Positive Ads intro campaign, negative ads to illustrate your opponents campaign, then finish with Positive ads to remind voters why vote for you campaign.

JB has ran the campaign in this primary that Kennedy and Biss wanted to run. They just didn’t have the money nor the structural support to do it.

This ad illustrates those facts well.

    It’s good, it’s really good.

What would’ve made it better would’ve been a closing argument that was surrounded by the groundwork of going after Rauner far more than they did. They went after Trump many times, fine, but Rauner is the guy they are going after and this ad speaks to that in perfect tone and tenor… but as a close, it woulda tied the loose ends better had the focus been greater on Rauner these past weeks and months, and less on President Trump.

    It’s a “B+, B”

    “Why”… the reasons above.

  13. - Arsenal - Thursday, Mar 15, 18 @ 11:36 am:

==JB has ran the campaign in this primary that Kennedy and Biss wanted to run.==

Just Kennedy. Biss seems to have always saw his path as a quasi-insurgent campaign. The results may not be what he wanted (but, six days, maybe they will be), but I think this is the “kind” of race he wanted to run.

  14. - Amalia - Thursday, Mar 15, 18 @ 11:48 am:

Rauner is disliked by Dem primary voters so this is a good ad to pull on that. That said, I’m tired of negative. I want aspirational.

  15. - Century Club - Thursday, Mar 15, 18 @ 11:48 am:

    B+

It’s well executed for what it is… a 3 yard run up the middle designed to run out the clock. Anybody looks good to the Dems when compared to Rauner.

  16. - King Louis XVI - Thursday, Mar 15, 18 @ 11:54 am:

How will Pritzker report ad expenditure on D-2s?

    1. Benefitting his campaign committee?
    2. In-kind to Ives?

    Pritzker-Uihlein tag-team.

    Nice.

  17. - Scott Fawell's Cellmate - Thursday, Mar 15, 18 @ 11:55 am:

    A-/B+

    Clean, clear strong message.

Pritzker team is taking nothing for granted. Ground game near me looks solid too.

  18. - Anon221 - Thursday, Mar 15, 18 @ 12:06 pm:

I think that will be a key to whoever is the Dem nom. Rauner now has a record, and that record needs to be shown over and over again how much it damaged the state while he was shakin’ up, turnin’ around, or not bein’ in charge. Follow that with, this is what Illinois is, can be, and will be- much like the PSA from yesterday. And, with this being the Bicentennial, any Illinois bashing Rauner does is not going to play well. It may have in 2014, but that was before the 2016 election and a national headache and heartache. Time to heal and work together. Not Rauner’s forte.

  19. - Grandson of Man - Thursday, Mar 15, 18 @ 12:51 pm:

Very good ad. Rauner is so zealous in his hatred of Madigan that he makes major blunders, such as saying he’s not in charge, he’ll hang Madigan around people’s necks and will not do his job but attack opponents 100% of the time.

When Pritzker’s name came up, a few people told me they had positive impressions. That tells me that Pritzker should continue to focus strongly on his accomplishments, the job creation and school breakfasts, and positive messaging, should he be nominated, of course.

  20. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Mar 15, 18 @ 1:52 pm:

===…I guess this is the closest we’re getting to “blind trust, broken trust.”===

    - TKMH -

Imagine if the ran that ad, “blind trust - broken trust” and closed with this to tie it together…

    Head scratchers…

  21. - A guy - Thursday, Mar 15, 18 @ 2:20 pm:

It’s a good ad. Hope he has another one in the can that addresses the loud footsteps on his heels.

This could be viewed as taking the primary win for granted by some folks…bit of a turnoff for the indie types. Especially lately with all the out of touch accusations.

Just in case, I’d have that second one reeled up and ready.

  22. - cc - Thursday, Mar 15, 18 @ 7:23 pm:

If JB is so rich, he should immediately build a new home for veterans in Quincy and donate it to the remaining vets in memory of all those lost to this disease. And he should find a facility somewhere that he already owns or could buy and move them there in the meantime while new home is built for them. Rauner could have already done this but he’s by his own actions, cares for nothing for any of most youngest, oldes or most unfortunate in state.

  23. - Lester Holt’s Mustache - Thursday, Mar 15, 18 @ 8:06 pm:

Ad is very well done, and the newscast clip use is a good strategy - much better than voiceover reads by random deep-voiced guy or concerned sounding woman. Also I like them again using broadcast clips from downstate news stations and not just relying on Chicago newscasts. Keep that up.

==If JB is so rich, he should immediately build a new home for veterans in Quincy and donate it to the remaining vets in memory of all those lost to this disease. ==

He’d get harangued for opportunism, but this is still not the worst idea I’ve seen on Capfax. And it’s three million times better than any idea Ron has ever posted.
