Tonight’s election coverage plan

Tuesday, Mar 20, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* We are going to have live election results tonight from Scott Kennedy’s Illinois Election Data website. They’ll be constantly updated so you won’t have to constantly refresh your screen.

As a precaution, I’m having my fine team at MCS beef up this site even more today. So CapitolFax.com will be offline for just a few minutes around 5 o’clock this afternoon. Don’t panic. I just got a case of the last-minute worries and decided to calm myself by boosting our oomph to avoid any crashes (notice how technical I am). But it could still happen, particularly if the governor’s race(s) wind(s) up close. So, please: Don’t constantly refresh your browsers tonight. Thanks.

* The Sun-Times’ Lynn Sweet is doing a live election night broadcast and I plan to embed it on this site. The show starts at 6:30 and will run until at least 10:30. The paper’s reporting staff will be featured along with these guests…

* Tom Bevan of Real Clear Politics
* Rep. Robin Kelly D-Ill.
* Political Strategist Lance Trover
* Gov. Rauner Advisor Anne Kavanaugh
* Republican Strategist Eric Elk
* Democratic Strategist Rikeesha Phelon
* Chicago City Clerk Anna Valencia
* Our Revolution Illinois Chair Clem Balanoff
* Joining by phone, US Rep. Peter Roskam R-Ill.
* Sarah Brune, Executive Director, The Illinois Campaign for Political Reform

Looks good.

* What are your primary election night plans?

I am the plus one on husband’s invitation for a 7-course tasting menu in the ‘burbs. He is a food journalist. I’m sure all the races will be decided by the time we are finished eating… :)

Chinese takeout, hangout here as long as Rich keeps his shop open, think I have a cold Yuengling in the fridge… cannoli.

    I wasn’t invited to any hoity-toity election night parties…

  10. - Voltaire - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 1:09 pm:

Board game night. Taking place after the polls close but before any meaningful results come in. The perfect distraction.

  11. - BlueDogDem - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 1:09 pm:

Word. If Ives pulls the upset. Buds are on me.

Get my oil changed, do some laundry, maybe catch whatever NIT game is on tonight. Occasionally check here for updates.

Drink heavy if Rauner wins. Drink heavier if Ives loses.

“by boosting our oomph to avoid any crashes”

Ah, that made me laugh more then I care to admit.

  16. - Steve Rogers - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 1:14 pm:

OW, wish I had a Yuengling in my fridge, but I’ll probably down of a few 1818 Bicentennial beers while not refreshing CapFax. If you haven’t tried the Bicentennial beer, it’s pretty good-a mildly hoppy ale.

  17. - Saluki - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 1:15 pm:

    Margaritas and fajitas

  18. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 1:15 pm:

    - Steve Rogers -

Thanks, I’ll check it out. I don’t mind a hoppy ale

    :)

  19. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 1:17 pm:

I gave up booze for lent, which is really going to test my resolve tonight. Normally I’d be drunk-commenting here all night, but now that I’ll be sober, I’ll probably just curl up in the fetal position and rock myself back and forth until the returns come in.

Election day is always, by far, the longest day of the year. And the hour after the polls close is always, by far, the longest hour of the longest day.

I really want a drink now.

I’m an election geek in a small rural county. So I’ll be up at courthouse about 8pm to tally votes in a few races. Governor - Dem & GOP and 93rd House (Go Norine!) main ones.

  22. - HoneyBadger - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 1:24 pm:

Rich, glad you are able to boost your oomph. At our age it can be tough. /s

  27. - Huh? - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 1:32 pm:

Have a drink or three and go to bed.

  28. - Ken_in_Aurora - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 1:32 pm:

OW, I hope it’s from New China Hut - nice people and good food!

I’m probably going to ignore the results at least until the 10:00 news. Then I’ll start looking at the downmarket race results, which is an exercise in frustration since the Aurora Election Commission website is normally totally useless. (I’m hoping the referendum to put it out of its misery is successful… let Kane handle it. Too bad the referendum question was worded so opaquely, intentionally I’m sure.)

  29. - Soccermom - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 1:37 pm:

    Massive anxiety. Alternating with hysteria.

  30. - Telly - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 1:37 pm:

Love Scott Kennedy. Saves the aggravation of flipping between the county clerk’s and Chicago Brd of Election’s sites and then adding the totals in Cook County based districts.

Let’s hope David Orr counts and posts the vote totals from the burbs faster than he has the last few cycles.

  32. - Cheryl44 - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 1:38 pm:

I’ve been invited to watch the results with the Quinn campaign. I have no idea why. I’m going to swing by but I probably won’t stay.

Planning on spending the evening with the companionable and knowledgeable crew of political junkies here at Cap Fax, with occasional breaks to follow my Twitter feed, which is knowledgeable but not nearly as companionable.

    Looking forward.

    Here.

That question is just dumbfounding. It’s on a post about live election results.

    Maybe I need a nap.

Watching Illinois primary returns on the internet and laughing, LOUDLY, and the folly and dysfunction of the Illinois political system!

I’m also going to the Fountain Hills, AZ Town Council Meeting to castigate them for proposing a $7 million per year tax increase for ill-conceived and low value capital program funding….

Yeah, there’s corrupt pork spending here in Arizona as well. The difference is that here we at least have a chance to do something about it.

  51. - Ducky LaMoore - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 2:23 pm:

If it’s anything like the last three primaries, I will be having a normal evening and occasionally check the net to see every single person I voted for lose.

  52. - Michelle Flaherty - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 2:23 pm:

    RIKEESHA!!!

Miss her. She needs more spotlight.
I’ll tune into the Sweet Show just for that.

  53. - electiondaywaitingkillsme - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 2:29 pm:

Is it 8 o’clock yet? I’ll be watching CapFax, eating some kind of food that I didn’t make. And you had me at Rikeesha. She is THE BEST. Happy they asked her to be on the panel.

  54. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 2:29 pm:

I think the democrat governoevprimary will be competitive

  55. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 2:31 pm:

@Ducky LaMoore, I hope democrat governor primary is like 2002. Very close among 3 candidates

  56. - @misterjayem - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 2:45 pm:

    “That question is just dumbfounding”
It’s been a long primary, Rich.

  60. - The End Is Near - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 3:53 pm:

I’ll probably just exchange inappropriate Facebook messages with various women while enjoying some celebratory salami at Ram Villivalam’s victory party.

  61. - JoanP - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 3:53 pm:

I’m going to a screening of a film of an oral history project (http://www.cleaningclosets.org/). This will likely be accompanied by drinks and eats.

Then I’ll come home and not constantly refresh my browser. Wouldn’t want to interfere with your oomph, Rich.

I will not be watching TV, at least not at home. Mine crapped out a couple of months ago, and it’s been delightful not seeing the campaign ads. I may not replace it until November 7.

  62. - Wensicia - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 4:20 pm:

I’m hoping to retire for the night before the governors’ races are decided. Probably won’t happen, but I’d like to see the uber-wealthy candidates sweat out the returns.

  63. - OneMan - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 5:05 pm:

Going to be at the Aurora Election Commission, perhaps for the last time depending how the referendum to end the commission plays out

  64. - revvedup - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 5:25 pm:

I’ll be refreshing a browser, flipping over-the-air news channels, and wondering which political party is more dysfunctional.

In addition, I complement Rich on increasing his oomph to the 64-bit version :)

  65. - Pius - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 5:27 pm:
