Wednesday, May 2, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller * Hmm…
* From a pal… ![]() Yep. *** UPDATE 1 *** This buy report turned out to be untrue, so now I’m wondering if the Rauner campaign placed a digital buy as well. Checking…
*** UPDATE 2 *** The Rauner buy, I’m told, is for digital ads only. No TV. But the gif still applies. /s

I’m just excited for the Wargames reference. Makes me feel young but reminds me that I’m old at the same time.
- Truthseeker - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 10:39 am:
If ads for the Governors race did not start until September, an entire States’ electorate would rejoice!!!
- Concerned Dem - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 10:40 am:
Might I suggest that Team JB not wait until Early voting starts to make the case why Rauner needs to be replaced. I know they don’t want to be first, but they have the heavy lifting to do, despite Rauner’s poll numbers being in the toilet.
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 10:40 am:
Bruce Rauner failed.
The rest is supporting the factual statement… Bruce Rauner failed.
Rauner better hope his approval is above 26% come September, because with Pritzker already underwater… Rauner is behind, double-digits, in a possible blue wave year… in a state where Trump polls poorly… and Rauner is polling worse than Trump… oh… and maybe McCann too?
What would be different in a Rauner second term?
Hmm.
- Saluki - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 10:55 am:
There is no obvious path to victory for Bruce Rauner.
- Reality Check - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 10:57 am:
I’m just here for Dabney Coleman’s mustache.
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 10:58 am:
You would think, starting July, Rauner would try to run positive ads, sprinkled here and there, to try to rehabilitate himself.
Anything, even Diana Rauner speaking to how Bruce has empathy, and trying for a better Illinois… anything to seem less combative, more “likable”… to seem engaged… a positive message of Rauner, the man…
If the Rauner Crew knows Bruce is unable to get from his underwater status… wow… what a waste these past 3 years have been, $100 million of just his own (and Democrat Diana’s) money to give up on trying to seem likable and run a campaign where the baseline is “I know Rauner cares. Bruce is a good man”…
The Rauner persona can’t be rehabilitated?
That speaks volumes.
- Publius - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 11:00 am:
Saluki,
Trump had no obvious path to victory. Is anyone watching for a Rauner / Russia connection
- Ambrose Chase - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 11:00 am:
I like vodka, I just hope they don’t make me eat any of those dang fish eggs.
- Person 8 - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 11:02 am:
JB can wait as well, as long as McCann get on the ballot.
McCann can/(will need to) go after Rauner early in order to get the conservative polls in his favor.
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 11:03 am:
===Trump had no obvious path to victory.===
Trump lost Illinois by 16 points, polling between 12-18 points behind Clinton most of the campaign.
Unless Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, or other states elect, via an electoral college, Illinois’ governor…
- Grandson of Man - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 11:04 am:
I thought it was terrible that Rauner or his supporters was runnin’ anti-Madigan ads during the state’s most critical time—budget negotiations after going two years without a budget.
The damage is done, when it comes to Rauner’s term. There’s no way to spin out of three years of purposeful fiscal and human wreckage unlike anything previously seen. Rauner also owns what would have happened to the state on top of what did happen, because of his vetoes.
And that complete rejection of any responsibility and blaming others to go along with the damage? The total failure coupled with zero responsibility is oppo platinum for Pritzker, as long as Pritzker doesn’t have something very damaging.
- WOPPR - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 11:11 am:
The Wargames gif made my day!
I don’t believe the TV barrage won’t start until September.
- A guy - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 11:16 am:
With any luck, the sanity of this decision will prevail.
- Streator Curmudgeon - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 11:21 am:
What the…heck?
- Henry Francis - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 11:25 am:
The Guv ain’t got nothin’ to be positive about in his campaign.
Look at his Twitter. It is nothing but “fight Madigan” “Madigan-Pritzker this/that”. “Taxes”. Only negative stuff.
Spend 30 seconds scrolling through JB’s Twitter. Then spend 30 seconds on the Guv’s. The contrast in mood is extraordinary.

===There is no obvious path to victory for Bruce Rauner.===
The only path to victory is a Pritzker campaign that follows the mistakes of the 2016 Clinton campaign. He needs to be aggressive and unite his party. And there will be bad press related to JBs wealth. He needs to be proactive not reactive. May/June would not be a bad time to be running positive ads touting his successes. Get his positives up as high as he can, then bury Rauner in July and August.
- Anon0091 - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 11:31 am:
This is a bluff. Rauner will be on the air with negative ads this summer. Only question is when. I agree with Joshua that the only way to win a nuclear war is not to play but Rauner doesn’t have that luxury. As his numbers remain in the tank, pressure will mount from the GOP and from his financial supporters for Rauner to launch an attack. Mark my words.
- Anon0091 - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 11:33 am:
“And there will be bad press related to JBs wealth.”
Fortunately, Rauner is a middle class man of the people so he’ll be able to really go after JB’s wealth. /s
- A Jack - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 11:34 am:
I saw an older positive JB ad last night on Facebook. It was the one that suggested that we get to know JB.
Of course we already know Rauner and can easily equate Rauner’s term with the thermal nuclear war on Illinois’ budget.
- @misterjayem - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 11:38 am:
JB would be crazy to put up television ads before 9/1 and take the blame for starting the campaign’s air war.
But I wouldn’t be surprised if TV ads from an ‘independent’ political action committee started pounding Bruce sometime in August.

“How about a nice game of chess.” If we can get through May and June without a bunch of negative ads I will be happy. This is Pritzger’s election to lose. There is no way for Rauner to rehabilitate himself. He has no talent for the job, and has surrounded himself with people who tell him he is right. His time in the state capitol is coming to an end. I hope the BTIA have their resumes ready.
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 11:41 am:
===This is a bluff.===
I dunno…
You run Senger and that “other guy” on your statewide ticket to tamp down turnout and keep energy, statewide, down. Rauner is all but conceding SoS, Comptroller, and Treasurer… and Harold is a conservative downstate female, win or lose, in place to energize some noise, but not fever-pitch noise.
Anyone, after these 4 years, in campaigning and governing, see Ole Slip and Sue forcing the acknowledgment of a campaign coming up in a big way?
Any Cook County, countywide, GOP races of high visibility going on?
Rauner needs a lower turnout.
Even in July, let’s say, running a spotty positive ad here and there to rehab Rauner, reminding voters, especially Democrats, women, minorities, union members… Rauner needs a disenfranchised electorate.
I’m not saying going earlier won’t happen. The reason Rauner *may* not is the need of a depressed turnout.
- AC - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 11:42 am:
==Current start date is 9/1==
It does seem like a good idea for the Rauner’s to find the perfect property in Italy before starting the campaign season in earnest.
- A guy - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 11:43 am:
==But I wouldn’t be surprised if TV ads from an ‘independent’ political action committee started pounding Bruce sometime in August.==
…which will trigger a response in kind from another Indy PAC and we’ll have Mutally Assured Destruction in progress from that moment on.
Lucky us.
- Arsenal - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 11:55 am:
Guys, that he has reserved a buy starting on 9/1 doesn’t preclude anything prior to that. You get discounts for locking in buys early. That’s all this is.
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 12:07 pm:
===…that he has reserved a buy starting on 9/1 doesn’t preclude anything prior to that. You get discounts for locking in buys early. That’s all this is.===
Understood.
Also why I think/thought/believe Rauner should run spotty, here and there, ads starting in July with positive messages to rehabilitate Rauner.
There’s also an argument that Rauner’s Crew wants a lower turnout so why keep voters ginned up thru the summer, then try to control and keep pace in the last 12 weeks…
The scheduling is just that, a reserving, just as you say. The rest is fun speculation, as May has arrived.
- Grandson of Man - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 12:26 pm:
Pritzker or Rauner could win. A campaign should reject any notion that a candidate is a shoo-in. No matter how bad an incumbent may be, politicians are in the business of public relations. It is owed to voters to communicate with them and work very hard on campaigning and winning votes.
- James Knell - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 12:30 pm:
So did Rauner buy ALL the ads slots or just most of them?
His path to victory is “Your state government is corrupt and does nothing for you, and I’m here to shrink it (down to the size of Grover Norquist’s putrid shrived-up heart).”
Of course, he is the enemy of civilization, education, and enlightened humanity.
- This G Needs To Be Dropped - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 1:14 pm:
Retired Educator,
It’s PritzKer, not PritzGer. Be like Bruce. Drop the G.
- Retired Educator - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 1:56 pm:
This G, Sorry about that. I was doing a quick comment before I mowed the grass. I got a little behind myself.

LOL is that the video from war games? That’s awesome.
- Property of IDOC - Wednesday, May 2, 18 @ 9:03 pm:
Rich, didn’t see another spot for this, but we received two phone polls tonight, both originating from Rauner ( from the questions negative tenor). They were sourced through Kalamata Research, out of Fla.
( yes, I had him spell it,)
