Leaders will meet again today at 5

Tuesday, May 15, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* From Gov. Rauner’s campaign late this morning…

Three months ago this week, Governor Rauner addressed the Illinois General Assembly and proposed a balanced budget for the state.

Governor Rauner’s budget proposal meets provisions set forth in the historic school funding compromise passed last year, addresses the looming pension crisis, and opens the door to rolling back the Madigan 32% income tax hike.

With time running short in the General Assembly’s spring legislative session, now is the time for parties enact a balanced budget for a full year.

The Governor made his case three months ago. It’s time for both parties to come to the table.

I’ve since confirmed that the governor and the four legislative leaders are scheduled to meet at 5 o’clock this afternoon.

* But that meeting may not last long. From the governor’s public schedule…

What: Gov. Rauner delivers remarks at the Illinois Travel and Tourism Industry legislative reception
Where: Abraham Lincoln DoubleTree Hotel, 701 E. Adams St., Springfield
Date: Tuesday, May 15, 2018
Time: 5:45 p.m.

Your predictions?

Rauner - “Reinstate the death penalty or no budget”

  2. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, May 15, 18 @ 2:07 pm:

Rauner: Have 71 and 36 ready. I’ll veto it as fast as I can. It’s 71 and 36 right? Not 60 and 30? I thought it was a simple majority, I’ll have to check, but, whatever, get something to me do I can veto it, use those who betrayed me or whatever…

  3. - Skeptic - Tuesday, May 15, 18 @ 2:17 pm:

    Oops. Banned punctuation alert.
Rauner [Arriving 30 minutes late]: “Would you look at the time(banned) I have a 5:45 meeting I absolutely have to be at…”

  4. - Jocko - Tuesday, May 15, 18 @ 2:18 pm:

Does the Rauner campaign release count as one lie or four? I particularly like the saying “The Governor made his case” as if Bruce crafted a budget address worthy of scholarship.

  5. - Annonin' - Tuesday, May 15, 18 @ 2:23 pm:

Don’t the magoos at the GovJunk campaign know the claims of balanced budgets and tax cuts were blown out of the sky about 90 secs after the speech text was handed out?\
Guessin’ this is about the last time these guys waste limited end of session hours meetin’ with GovJunk.

  6. - Head scratcher - Tuesday, May 15, 18 @ 2:30 pm:

Gov. Rauner left Speaker Madigan off his death penalty AV. That is a major concession to Democrats in Bruce Rauner’s eyes.

  7. - Norseman - Tuesday, May 15, 18 @ 2:37 pm:

Replaying previous leader meeting comments: Rauner - Democrats are playing games, don’t want a budget for political reasons and they want to raise taxes because Madigan; Cullerton - We made some progress; Durkin - What Bruce said; Madigan - Rauner is being extreme; and, Brady - What Durkin said.

Bottom line - Another meeting needed.

  8. - Ducky LaMoore - Tuesday, May 15, 18 @ 2:41 pm:

Cycle A repeats. But maybe this time let Rauner have the first words. Madigan and Cullerton should avoid all comment and media until then.

  9. - dbk - Tuesday, May 15, 18 @ 2:45 pm:

-Governor Rauner’s budget proposal meets provisions set forth in the historic school funding compromise passed last year, addresses the looming pension crisis, and opens the door to rolling back the Madigan 32% income tax hike.–

Hmm. Meets provisions of school funding bill by proposing to shift pension costs to local school districts? [Also, the districts didn’t see any new money until April.]

Hmm. Addresses the looming pension crisis by shifting costs to local districts so they can go bankrupt.

Hmm. Opens the door to rolling back the income tax hike by spending every projected cent of it in the balanced budget.

It would seem the gov and his campaign are on the same page regarding that pesky veracity thing.

And it’s only Tuesday. And it’s only mid-May.

  10. - Anon221 - Tuesday, May 15, 18 @ 2:52 pm:

Rauner’s just goin’ through the motions, waitin’ on that US Supreme Court decision.

From the Hoover Institute interview June 26, 2017:

“…the reason we’re going to succeed is the biggest changes we’re driving have nothing to do with the General Assembly, nothing to do with any votes inside Springfield…. Nothing to do with any of the budget. Nothing to do with any of the reform agenda in the legislature. We are going to be in front of the Supreme Court, and there is more than a 90% odds that we win that case.”

  11. - Al - Tuesday, May 15, 18 @ 2:58 pm:

Opportunity for Rauner to make the local news droppin his jeez, complaining in an exasperated voice That Madigan.

The guy is so phony we should say Rauner when referring to baloney.

Hey, yous wanna fried Rauner sandwich?

House R’s will jump ship in July to ensure k-12 and other essential services have continuity.

  12. - Pot calling kettle - Tuesday, May 15, 18 @ 3:25 pm:

The Dems could confuse the Gov by giving him a revenue # that was the same as the GOMB. Instead, I expect the meeting to last 15 min and the ensuing press availabilities to add up to over an hour.

  13. - Sue - Tuesday, May 15, 18 @ 3:53 pm:

The Governor endorses the recommendation appearing in Crains today by for genius economists of imposing a 1 percent tax on the value of everyone’s home to be paid every year for 10 years to bail out our insolvent pension programs

  14. - JS Mill - Tuesday, May 15, 18 @ 4:16 pm:

=Governor Rauner’s budget proposal meets provisions set forth in the historic school funding compromise passed last year, addresses the looming pension crisis,=

Ok, so it is clear that the governor is already conceding the election and embarking on his career as a stand-up comic.

Many districts are only breaking even with the new funding due to loses in MCATS and CPPRT, and now he wants to take more money away.

He is right about one thing, it is historic. An historic lie.

  15. - RNUG - Tuesday, May 15, 18 @ 4:17 pm:

    == for 10 years … ==

    Actually 30 years

  16. - don the legend - Tuesday, May 15, 18 @ 4:39 pm:

==The Governor endorses the recommendation appearing in Crains today by for genius economists of imposing a 1 percent tax on the value of everyone’s home to be paid every year for 10 years to bail out our insolvent pension programs ==

Put the pipe down. Governor Junk did not endorse the plan.

  17. - Sue - Tuesday, May 15, 18 @ 4:55 pm:

Don the legend- it’s supposed to be predictions

  18. - SAP - Tuesday, May 15, 18 @ 5:06 pm:

The Governor and the leaders will have enough time to agree on the shape of the table before the meeting breaks up.

  19. - Mama - Tuesday, May 15, 18 @ 5:53 pm:

Rauner: Strip the unions of their rights & benefits or no budget.
