Cullerton heard “Laurel”

* Tribune…
Democratic Senate President John Cullerton emerged from behind the closed doors of another lengthy budget meeting in Gov. Rauner’s Capitol office Thursday and announced the group had come to an agreement.
“We had a nice discussion,” Cullerton said. “I would say everybody heard ‘Laurel.’ ”
He was, of course, referencing the recent internet phenomenon in which people hear an audio clip as either “Laurel” or “Yanny.” But befitting the way budget talks go in Springfield, Cullerton quickly hedged on the idea there was some agreement.
“I heard Laurel,” he said. “You’ll have to ask the governor and the speaker what they thought.”
* Check it out yourself…
I heard “Yanny” on my laptop.
* But it apparently depends on the type of device you use and its low frequency settings and the way your ears hear sounds…
OK, I heard both this time.
More hear… I mean “here” or here.

For a valid test go to the original vocabulary.com web page that started it all. https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/laurel
Listening to that, I heard “Laurel”. I do not know what was influencing those who heard otherwise, but this could be an argument in favor of legalizing recreation cannabis

I don’t care about the phenomenon (which will probably be the fad of summer 2018 a la Pokémon Go two years ago).
But for fun, I move that the City of Leland Grove (one of the donut hole communities of Springfield) rename that spur that’s also called West Laurel Ave. that later curves into Willemore Avenue (while the rest of Laurel goes straight west) to “Yanni Avenue.” (Just to avoid a little confusion).

The NYT has a recording of it where you can manipulate the frequency going from lower frequency to a higher frequency and then doing the opposite. Listening to it, you can hear when you start/stop hearing Laurel and start/stop hearing Yanni.

Leland Grove, which includes the site of Illini Country Club, is also well-known among some drivers in the Springfield area as one of the most notorious speedtraps. Many streets with 25 mph speed limit–I wouldn’t go even 1 MPH over there.
