New Pritzker digital ad mocks Rauner’s Cubs ad

Friday, Jun 1, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Background is here. Press release…

Today, the Pritzker campaign released a new digital ad “You’re Out!” highlighting how bush league Bruce Rauner compares his failed leadership to the World Series champion Chicago Cubs.

While Rauner claimed to find “similarities” between himself and the Cubs, the new video shows how he’s struck out as governor. Year after year, Rauner made a swing and a miss at introducing balanced budgets. He ran up the score on Illinois’ credit rating, setting records for the worst in the nation. And, on primary day, Rauner lost 48% of the Republican vote.

“While baseball season ends in October, it’s clear that after three years of constant crisis and failed leadership, Bruce Rauner will lose his governorship this November,” said Pritzker campaign communications director Galia Slayen.

Rauner:

And you know what, there’s a lot of similarities to what the Cubs have done in recent years and what we need to do in Illinois.

On screen:

The Cubs have made the playoffs the last three years. Bruce Rauner never proposed a balanced budget.

The Cubs won their first World Series in 100+ years. Bruce Rauner made Illinois credit rating the worst in American history.

People enjoy watching the Cubs. Only 51% of Republicans voted for Bruce Rauner in his primary.

Baseball season ends in October. Bruce Rauner will lose his governorship in November.

    That was pretty bad.

Bad use of color text - hard to read.

  3. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 9:33 am:

Someone must be bored over in the “Pritzker Crew Base Camp”.

At least they’re not playing “Uno”?

A lazy pass at Rauner’s digital ad. Wonder what didn’t make the cut.

  4. - Louis G Atsaves - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 9:34 am:

Didn’t rebut the Rauner ad points. Rate it D.

  5. - wordslinger - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 9:35 am:

Both spots are pretty silly. But Rauner served up a beach ball down Broadway, admitting to be a long-time loser (and not a lovable one) who just needs more time.

===Didn’t rebut the Rauner ad points.===

    LOL

Rauner admitted he’s an abysmal failure.

    Why would Pritzker dispute that?

Good attacks, bad format. C-. They have a lot of ammunition, they need to take better shots.

  8. - Lucky Pierre - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 9:39 am:

Hey JB, why has Illinois has had the weakest recovery and continues to lead the nation in outmigration since the great recession?

Could it be Democrats won’t allow any reforms to Illinois government or business environment?

45% of Democratic primary voters did not vote for you , the Madigan rubber stamp candidate.

Do you still actually believe no one leaves Illinois because of high taxes?

Did you see Moody’s say they expect the Illinois economy to continue to lag the rest of the nation in the future?

What is your plan to grow the economy now that your signature progressive income tax proposal failed by 10 votes in the House last week?

  9. - Grandson of Man - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 9:40 am:

It’s okay but I could use specifics, like explosion of debt/bill backlog, worst budget crisis in nation, social services decimated—a few of these to fit in the ad time frame.

I like the baseball theme and clear side-by-side messages with no narration, and you’re out.

    B- or C+

  10. - Whatever - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 9:48 am:

Both are silly and pointless, especially when one realizes no one watches digital ads and they don’t move voters. They’re merely produced to get earned media. Hence, the cheesey Cubs reference.

  11. - Responsa - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 9:52 am:

Grade C. It’s too complicated for viewers. It could have been a decent response to the Rauner ad but the red and blue lettering colors are almost unreadable against/aside the bright white letters. This confuses and neutralizes the message.

  12. - Practical Politics - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 9:53 am:

    Deal or no deal?

A straight trade for Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts (a part owner of the Cubs) for Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner.

Send Ricketts from Lincoln, Nebraska to the Land of Lincoln.

  13. - Skeptic - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 9:53 am:

“100% of Cubs fans root for the Cubs. 51% of Republicans voted for Bruce Rauner.” I like it.

It worked for me. Once the music started, I was hooked. “Rauner Failed” flashcards are hokey but effective.

“Baseball Season ends in October…Bruce Rauner will lose his governorship in November”

Awkward phrasing. Awkward choice of words. Lame in an awkward way.

I anxiously await more failed attempts of creativity and cleverness from the Blue Wave.

==“Baseball Season ends in October…Bruce Rauner will lose his governorship in November”==

Well, he’d lose it in January.

–Both are silly and pointless, especially when one realizes no one watches digital ads and they don’t move voters.–

Better tell the advertisers. Because digital ad spending was $107B and climbing in 2018, while broadcast ad spending was $70B and flat.

  19. - Redraider - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 10:07 am:

Good Friday, Lucky. This is Rauners Illinois over the last 3/12 years. Many of your questions should be asked of him, not someone that was a private citizen during this time. In staying with the baseball analogy, you committed 4 errors in just a few paragraphs

  20. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 10:07 am:

===…continues to lead the nation in outmigration since the great recession?===

You know Rauner is currently governor, and hasn’t stopped it.

===45% of Democratic primary voters did not vote for you , the Madigan rubber stamp candidate.===

… and yet, Rauner trails Pritzker, by double digits in polling and Rauner’s approval rating sits at 26%.

===Do you still actually believe no one leaves Illinois because of high taxes?===

When Bruce Rauner signs the budget, Rauner WILL validate the 32% tax increase. Rauner will certify the 32% tax increase is required to balance Illinois’ budget.

Have you been reprogrammed yet? The tax thingy… Rauber will own the 32% tax increase’s validity.

===Did you see Moody’s say they expect the Illinois economy to continue to lag the rest of the nation in the future?===

Governors own Moody’s ratings. Do i need to drag out that Mike Schrimpf quote how governors own those ratings, lol

===What is your plan to grow the economy now that your signature progressive income tax proposal failed by 10 votes in the House last week?===

Since Rauner now wholly agrees the 32% tax increase is valid, I’d probably worry more how Rauner can say the 32% tax increase isn’t needed, lol

  21. - wordslinger - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 10:09 am:

LP, you really need to get with the re-election program. You’re stuck in 2016 mode.

The Boss’ digital ads now sing the praises of all the jobs he’s created, all the red tape he’s cut, and the hundreds of millions he’s saved.

In the next day or so will come the “balanced budget, no tax increase” ads.

Things are looking swell in Rauner’s Illinois, this election year. Just check out his digital ads.

  22. - wordslinger - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 10:12 am:

–”Baseball Season ends in October…Bruce Rauner will lose his governorship in November”

Awkward phrasing. Awkward choice of words. Lame in an awkward way.–

LOL, you stumbled over those straight-forward statements, did you? How would you rephrase, Cyrano?

  23. - Cindy Lou - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 10:12 am:

I’ll give it a ‘B’ just for being a new ad.

I saw the “Hey, JB…” where he was getting out of his vehicle and going into a meeting. I saw it over and over and over again. Now I’m seeing JB ad of helping schoolkids get meals. Over and over and over again.

Both decent ads, but wearing old fast. I can’t clink on any news story link hardly anywhere that I didn’t hear the voice going ‘Hey, JB”

I want assorted. I want new, fresh, keep my interest. Tell me something I haven’t already heard/seen a gazillion times (seemingly, at times, all in one day).

  24. - A guy - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 10:17 am:

Rauner’s ad was well below par.

This one’s flat out dumb. Trying so hard to be cute, it’s even dumber. His digital crew is terrible. With that kind of money, there’s a lot of talent out there. Sheesh. Get some.

Did someone’s kid make this in windows movie maker? Who looked at this and said yeah, that’s a professional and complete product lol

  27. - Lucky Pierre - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 10:42 am:

JB is polling at 49.4% in the single poll you cite, are you hanging your hat on that?

What is he doing to earn the votes of independents and disaffected Republicans as well as the 45% of Democratic primary voters who voted against the Madigan candidate?

“Landlside” JB currently trails the Rauner percentage from the 2014 election

Governor Rauner believes has said that only raising taxes will not fix Illinois and the Democrats agree, in a non specific way, there is more work to be done to fix Illinois.

They just won’t detail what exactly that is and why it has taken them over 3 1/2 years to propose any reforms to Illinois government or business environment.

How will JB pay for all of his new “progressive” proposals now that his beloved “progressive” income tax faced bipartisan opposition and failed in the GA last week?

What income tax rate is he proposing?

  28. - Sue - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 10:55 am:

At least Rauner could run the bases. JB would suffer a heart attacking perhaps even throwing out the first pitch

  29. - Demoralized - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 10:58 am:

==45% of Democratic primary voters did not vote for you , the Madigan rubber stamp candidate.==

49% didn’t vote for Rauner. What’s your point?

LP - you truly have to be a bot to spout the nonsense you spout day in and day out. It’s the same record playing over and over. Get a new schtick

  30. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 10:59 am:

===JB is polling at 49.4% in the single poll you cite, are you hanging your hat on that?===

You can cite another poll, any other poll, no one will stop you.

===What is he doing to earn the votes of independents and disaffected Republicans as well as the 45% of Democratic primary voters who voted against the Madigan candidate?===

LOL… Rauner has yet to come to terms that 48% of Republicans voted for Jeanne Ives.

You should be more worried that the likes of Dan Proft and Pat Brady highlighted that Raunerites have alienated comservatibes and signing HB40… and lying to a Catholic Cardinal will have consequences at the ballot box, but you worry for JB, lol

Your concern for JB is admirable.

It appears Rauner’s 26% approval.., Rauner isn’t likable.

Focus on “Brewskis with Bruce”… that isn’t an accident.

  31. - Demoralized - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 11:06 am:

I hope they didn’t spend a lot of money on that ad. It’s like a bad PowerPoint presentation. Since we’re talking baseball this was a swing and a miss.

  32. - Truthteller - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 11:06 am:

Cubs proved that you don’t need Rauner’s turnaround agenda to build a successful business in Illinois.
We’ve had the wrong guy at the helm for too long.
Any manager with a four year record like Rauner’s would be long gone.

  33. - 100 percent of Cubs Fans? - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 11:07 am:

Yeah, all the Cubs fans were on board after 3.5 years of Ricketts…

    http://doubtingtheo.tumblr.com/

Also, does JB really want moderates to know that Bruce Rauner was deemed not conservative enough for the Jeanne Ives crowd? Or is JB courting the right and coming out tomorrow with a platform that Jeanne and Proft can get behind?

  34. - Arsenal - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 11:20 am:

==JB is polling at 49.4% in the single poll you cite, are you hanging your hat on that?==

What’s Rauner at in that poll again?

  35. - Uncle Ernie - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 11:33 am:

Bad, I had trouble reading it, too fast and bad use of color. Your Out was weird, Come on JB you can do better than this!

  36. - City Zen - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 11:54 am:

==Cubs proved that you don’t need Rauner’s turnaround agenda to build a successful business in Illinois.==

Shed payroll, get rid of older workers, hire some bright interns to learn on the job while customers continue to buy your inferior product.

I’m not sure a tanking strategy translates well to the small business world.

  37. - deenile - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 12:08 pm:

Lucky, I was thinking about it, and really, an incumbent Governor loses when the votes are tallied in November and loses again when he has to actually leave in January. Just wait, you’ll see.

  38. - Truthteller - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 12:46 pm:

City Zen- Cubs players have a union Unlike Rauner who brought with him a bunch of duds, the Cubs got Epstein and Maddon. And the club’s players have a union.
Businesses are always looking for someone else to blame for their own shortcomings. They should pull themselves up by their bootstraps. Isn’t that the advice they give to poor folks who don’t even have bootstraps.

  39. - Redraider - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 2:11 pm:

Nice personal attack on Pritzker weight, Sue. Deplorable much? In reality Rauner wouldn’t make it to 1st base , he would be too busy complaining about Madigan blocking the bag

  40. - Lost in Chicago - Friday, Jun 1, 18 @ 3:40 pm:

That ad could have been so much better. Total snoozefest.
