Rauner launches another anti-Madigan TV ad

Thursday, Jul 19, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Press release…

Today, the Rauner campaign is launching a new statewide ad titled “Works For Madigan.”

The ad documents Madigan’s record of getting rich from a corrupt property tax system and shines a light on Pritzker as Madigan’s handpicked candidate for governor. Their relationship spans years, including a company owned by Pritzker utilizing Madigan’s firm to receive massive tax breaks.

If Madigan and Pritzker get their way, hardworking Illinois families will see more of the same high taxes and corruption they’ve faced for decades.

“Madigan, taxes, corruption, toilets. Lather, rinse, repeat.”

* The ad

* Script

Mike Madigan: the most corrupt politician in all America. JB Pritzker: Madigan’s handpicked machine candidate for governor. Mike Madigan: he spent decades keeping Illinois property taxes high, and became a millionaire helping corrupt insiders dodge them. JB Prtizker: he hired Madigan, dodged thousands in property taxes, helped make Madigan rich, and stuck us with the bill.

JB Pritzker. He’ll work for Madigan, not you.

That’s a bold lead, but given that Madigan’s never been charged, let alone brought to trial or convicted, isn’t it a bit over the top? Unhinged, even?

  2. - Try-4-Truth - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 10:19 am:

It seems way to early to be this desperate.

The ad tells me more about Rauner than it does Pritzger or Madigan.

  3. - Spliff - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 10:20 am:

    two comments:

#1 At least JB will work and not parade around in costumes claiming not to be in charge while cutting ribbons.
#2 I plan on not voting for Madigan or any other Caucus leader in November which is easy since I like most of the rest of the state don’t live in any of their 4 districts.

  4. - Jocko - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 10:22 am:

Is this the same campaign that took offense at the implied CCS investment?

  5. - Concerned Dem - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 10:23 am:

Umm… Bruce… Have you heard of this guy named Donald Trump? Or that former Governor that you just shook hands with last weekend… George Ryan?

Joking aside, repeat something often enough without having the subject of the attack defend himself and you are left with people buying it hook line and sinker. It’s far past time for Madigan to defend himself. If he wants to lock up this election for JB & the rest of the Democratic Party he’d announce that he’ll retire when Bruce Rauner is out of office.

—-Mike Madigan: the most corrupt politician in all America

Rauner has the unique ability to make Madigan seem sympathetic.

I would imagine this will escalate because Rauner has created this cartoon villain to the point people tune it out so the only way to get through is get more cartoonish.

Mike “Snidely Whiplash” Madigan tied the fair maiden to the train tracks before….

  7. - Trapped in the 'burbs - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 10:27 am:

Thousands of dollars? Rauner made millions from handling investments from pension funds, millions. Now Rauner wants to discharge pension fund liabilities in bankruptcy. Hmmm, wonder how that will work. To be the most corrupt politician in the history of the universe, wouldn’t you at least think he’d have to have been convicted of something. Madigan has been investigated more than the Chicago mob and the government has come up with bupkis. Time for Bruce to face the fact that Madigan is a pro and Rauner and his revolving door of amateurs have lost.

  8. - don the legend - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 10:29 am:

Perhaps Speaker Madigan will wait for Rauner’s next election night telephone call this November 6 before he decides to step down or serve out another term.

  9. - Back to the Future - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 10:30 am:

Agree with anonymous. It is over the top.
Hard to believe this ad is effective.
The choice is between the candidates running for Governor.
I am not a huge Mike Madigan fan, but “the most corrupt politician in America” is hardly accurate.
If the choice was between Madigan, Pritzker or Bruce, at this point I would pick Madigan today.
Madigan, as far as I can tell, has never lied about anything unlike the other two.

  10. - A Jack - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 10:35 am:

And who is Rauner working for? It certainly is not the taxpayer after racking up millions in interest payments based on his budget impasse.

Perhaps Rauner is working for the North Shore cocktail circuit who undoubtably own millions in Illinois bonds and enjoying practically a junk bond interest in a low risk investment.

  11. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 10:41 am:

Bruce Rauner is down nine points to Pritzker, is underwater “everywhere” on his favorable, and this doesn’t make Rauner any more likable to the electorate.

If Rauner can’t be more likable, Madigan or not, Rauner will be hard pressed to find enough votes to win.

    Rauner is 15 points underwater.

Rauner is trailing Pritzker by 9 points.

Math is math is math is math.

This isn’t helping, but it’s possibly the lone way to win?

    Um, ok.

  12. - Anonymous - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 10:47 am:

Since when is “accuracy” any part of this battle between Rauner and JB? It’s the best Rauner’s got, and it will work if pounded in a steady drumbeat now till election. Not enough to win, but will make it close, I’d say.

  13. - DuPage Bard - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 10:49 am:

Good ad people will believe it because people don’t pay attention and need someone to blame. Look at the Jeanne Ives ads at the end just kept hitting Madigan and no one knew any better.

  14. - Arsenal - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 10:51 am:

It’s fine. If he had the airwaves to himself, it might help a little. But with all the counter-programming out there, hard to see it moving the needle to the tune of 9 points.

  15. - Roman - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 10:59 am:

JB has so much money to burn, what if he played some sort of ninja mind-game trick on Rauner using Madigan?

Like, count up all the times the governor signed a bill the speaker voted “yes” on and run a series of ads connecting Rauner with Madigan. (“He claimed he’d stand up to Mike Madigan and shake up Springfield, but as governor Bruce Rauner has teamed up with Madigan to pass 422 bills…”)

In addition to being hysterically funny, it might render “Blame Madigan” ineffective. Maybe Local 150 can fund some Sam McCann ads to this end.

  16. - Annonin' - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 12:06 pm:

Now we know why he cut off allowance payments to Durkie and NoTaxBill. Needed $$$ for these masterpieces.

  17. - Lucky Pierre - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 12:08 pm:

Mike Madigan is more unpopular than Donald Trump in Illinois but elected Democrats are following him like lemmings right over a cliff.

Truly makes no sense how even billionaire JB Pritzker can’t read the mood of the electorate on Madigan and the nation leading distrust of state government in Illinois.

  18. - JS Mill - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 1:12 pm:

=Rauner has the unique ability to make Madigan seem sympathetic.=

This makes me dislike Rauner even more than I dislike Madigan.

=If Madigan and Pritzker get their way, hardworking Illinois families will see more of the same high taxes and corruption they’ve faced for decades.=

This is a flat out lie, worse than the one that Pritzker is accused of that garnered all of the Raunerite pearl-clutching.

That is unless Rauner thinks he is hard working? Pritzker has repeated many times that he wants a graduated income tax that will tax the highest earners the most.

Even LP isn’t as dishonest as Rauner.

=Mike Madigan is more unpopular than Donald Trump in Illinois but elected Democrats are following him like lemmings right over a cliff.=

Except in the house district where he runs for office.

The Democrats are still the majority party regardless.

  19. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 1:15 pm:

===Mike Madigan is more unpopular than Donald Trump in Illinois but elected Democrats are following him like lemmings right over a cliff.===

    LOL.

Bruce Rauner, an incumbent governor, with no constituency is polling at 27%, trailing by 9 points on top of that, and you’re worried about Madigan?

    Madigan is running unopposed.

Trump lost Illinois by 16 points, statewide.

    Bruce Rauner is running statewide.

But… “Madigan”… how’d that work for Munger? lol

  20. - Keyrock - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 3:46 pm:

OW — “Math is math is math is math.“
How can you say that and call yourself a Republican?

  21. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 3:56 pm:

===How can you say that and call yourself a Republican?===

Do you think Trump, Rauner, and those “fiscal hawks” that either won’t pay bills or run up deficits butcsay growth alone will cure all… Republicans?

There was a time the GOP was the fiscal math hawks.

Others may have moved from that, but…

    How’s that?

  22. - Keyrock - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 4:23 pm:

    Old school, OW, old school.

  23. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 4:31 pm:

Yep. Never been accused of being the new wave of the GOP.

Old school, probably to a fault, bud.

  24. - Rabid - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 5:08 pm:

This only works in cook county, downstate will cheer for JB sticking it to Chicago

  25. - Rabid - Friday, Jul 20, 18 @ 2:12 am:

Team Rauner when you hire someone you don’t work for them, they work for you
