Question: Do you know what you won’t find in a legal pot dispensary?

Monday, Jul 30, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Answer: An illegally “defaced” firearm possessed by an owner without a FOID card

Springfield Police Department executed a search warrant July 25 a 2:55 p.m. at an apartment on the 800 block of Ridgely Avenue.

Two men were arrested - Marcus Brown, 29, and Graylon Brown, 20.

Upon arrival, officers found over 50 ecstasy pills, marijuana and a firearm in the apartment.

Marcus Brown is facing charges of possession of a defaced firearm, manufacturing the delivery of cannabis, possession of cannabis and two counts of possessing a firearm without a FOID card.

The state and local governments would also be receiving tax money off of those sales, and the dispensary’s workers would be paying income taxes to the state.

Also too, no underage customers.

It’s also impossible to find ecstasy in a marijuana dispensary.

  2. - Arthur Andersen - Monday, Jul 30, 18 @ 4:55 pm:

    “Manufacturing the delivery of cannabis?”

Probably won’t find copy editors in legal marijuana dispensaries, either.

  3. - Anonymous - Monday, Jul 30, 18 @ 4:55 pm:

Let’s take the money out of banger’s pockets and put that revenue into our states tax coffer.

This world operates on sense or nonsense…re-legalizing cannabis simply makes sense.

    You won’t see old Blue.

You will probably find better quality pot too…
    Just saying.

I still struggle to understand why Illinois is so behind on this. . . what am I missing?

  7. - AnonAnon - Monday, Jul 30, 18 @ 5:28 pm:

Anyone know any current information about them adding intractable pain and/or chronic pain? I haven’t heard anything since they appealed the order to add it the list of qualifying conditions.

  8. - Kelly Cassidy - Monday, Jul 30, 18 @ 5:34 pm:

AnonAnon, while it doesn’t specifically add to the list of conditions, SB336 will allow patiets who would otherwise be prescribed an opioid to gain access to the program while also fixing some of the biggest problems with the application process. It’s on the Gov’s desk now. He has until the end of August to decide if he’s going to sign it. It passed both chambers with bipartisan super majorities.

  9. - Arthur Andersen - Monday, Jul 30, 18 @ 5:44 pm:

Occam, I wish the Feds would fix that. My position on MMJ in particular has really evolved thanks to commenters on the blog. Employees and customers are placed at unnecessary risk due to the Reefer Madness mindset of the DEA.

  10. - FormerParatrooper - Monday, Jul 30, 18 @ 5:45 pm:

Knowing Illinois like we all do, the dispensaries will be higher priced than street prices. It may take of the well to do people out of the street buying because it would be hip to go there, but the people with less money will still be street buying supporting the gangs and cartels.

–It may take of the well to do people out of the street buying because it would be hip to go there, but the people with less money will still be street buying supporting the gangs and cartels.–

You know a lot of people who buy bootleg, illegal beer?

  12. - Anonymous - Monday, Jul 30, 18 @ 6:06 pm:

Legal cannabis prices will drop substantially,as they have in all of the States where cannabis has been re-legalized

The first mid-western State to re-legalize cannabis will reap the rewards of cannabis tourism from our neighboring states.

Let us not be last in line again?

  13. - Kelly Cassidy - Monday, Jul 30, 18 @ 6:24 pm:

Actually, FormerParatrooper, states that have a legalized adult use market have seen drops of upwards of 75% in the existing street market - they’re putting the street dealers out of business. Once states figured out that they couldn’t overtax it and drive folks back to the illegal market, the street markets all but disappear in most areas.

  14. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Monday, Jul 30, 18 @ 6:26 pm:

==the dispensaries will be higher priced than street prices.==
How do you know that? Do you buy weed? Wouldn’t dispensaries be private companies subject to market forces?

  15. - Amalia - Monday, Jul 30, 18 @ 6:37 pm:

No stems, no seeds that you don’t need?

  16. - FormerParatrooper - Monday, Jul 30, 18 @ 6:42 pm:

I know people who buy bootleg moonshine, and it is available in legal venues. Beer isn’t as profitable and many stores carry Hamms and Milwaukees Best for cheaper than a bootlegger can make it.

My point is legalization is not going to be the panacea to put street sellers out of business and put the illicit monies into State coffers. It will bring in revenue for sure, but it is not the cure.

  17. - Grandson of Man - Monday, Jul 30, 18 @ 6:43 pm:

“No stems, no seeds that you don’t need?”

Acapulco Gold is bad a** weed.

Cheech and Chong references aside, it’s a great point, about the safety of legal sales. Dispensaries are careful to whom they sell, no matter the state. Customers have to give ID’s and wait for entry into the merch part of the store, which is a separate part than the waiting room. Much more cautious than alcohol and many gun sales in America.

  18. - FormerParatrooper - Monday, Jul 30, 18 @ 6:50 pm:

I work in Oregon and Washington a lot. The street market changed to meet the demand for opioids. Opioids are still plentiful with having all the green cross places. I have been told you can still get the green stuff on the street cheaper than many of the approved stores.

  19. - wordslinger - Monday, Jul 30, 18 @ 6:54 pm:

–I know people who buy bootleg moonshine,–

Big share of the market, you think?

After the repeal of the Volstead Act, bootleg booze went from 100% of the supply to oogats

  20. - frisbee - Monday, Jul 30, 18 @ 7:00 pm:

Legalization will take a big bite out of the pot cartels but for a few decades probably won’t eliminate them completely. People aren’t fatally overdosing on the jazz cabbage so why make it so restrictive and taxed to the point that a street market continues to be able to exist? Treat it like other therapuetically active botanicals and let consumers consume Paratrooper. Responsible use ain’t gonna be a crime in Canada soon so clearly the Canucks aren’t afraid of a little freedom and liberty.

  21. - Anonymous - Monday, Jul 30, 18 @ 7:28 pm:

Jazz cabbage nearly cost me a new keyboard.

  22. - RJM - Monday, Jul 30, 18 @ 7:39 pm:

I can’t tell if FormerParatrooper sells weed illegally and doesn’t want his biz interrupted or hit the moonshine early and is just making sh** up. Actually, his last post reads like it was written by a brain addled octogenarian. Maybe all three?

  26. - Al - Monday, Jul 30, 18 @ 10:44 pm:

In 1988 DEA Judge Francis Young ruled after an extensive review of evidence, that Cannabis was a safe and effective medicine and should be rescheduled. It has been 30 years and Cannabis is still federally banned from medical use.

There are several different unique chemicals which effect the endocrine system. There are diseases of endocrine organs which people die from, yet researchers have had a tough time getting FDA approval to use Cannabis unless the study was designed to prove it causes mental illness (like alcohol does), or cancer (like tobacco). Call your congress critters and tell them to remove Cannabis from the controlled substances list.

I support legalization. I do not expect Illinois to do it right.

“Inhaling cancer causing smoke… the new way to a better tomorrow.”

Great news, Saluki: The Specialty Food Association named cannabis edibles as one of the top 10 food trends of 2018. And in Colorado, BDS Analytics reported that edible sales jumped 67% between February 2016 and February 2017.

When marijuana is legalized in Illinois, cannabis-infused food and drink alternatives will become available to address your genuine concerns about smoke inhalation.

If by do it wrong you mean be the last state/province on the continent to legalize marijuana you might have a point.
