Question of the day
Thursday, Aug 30, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller * Was really busy today and completely spaced out about a question and now it’s after 4 o’clock and I got nothing. I’m therefore declaring an open thread. Keep it Illinois-centric, please. Thanks.

Previous comment got caught in filter. Any chance Rauner follows the compliance officer’s ruling yesterday?
- Oswego Willy - Thursday, Aug 30, 18 @ 4:25 pm:
Will Rauner be involved in any Labor Day observances?
If so, how will the response be?
- NIU Grad - Thursday, Aug 30, 18 @ 4:28 pm:
The Trib got an advance of “Governor Tusk’s” book about his time with Blago.
Headline: “In new book, former aide says he posed as Rod Blagojevich on national security call governor refused to take”

You forgot to advise “be nice to each other”. Maybe, just maybe, you can take that for granted now…
- Oswego Willy - Thursday, Aug 30, 18 @ 4:34 pm:
Which Illinois school will go to a bowl this year?
Pick all that apply;
Illinois
Northwestern
NIU
None
All
- NIU Grad - Thursday, Aug 30, 18 @ 4:37 pm:
If NIU goes to a bowl, it will be a sub par one. #CanCarey
- 47th Ward - Thursday, Aug 30, 18 @ 4:41 pm:
Northwestern should get a bowl bid. If Thorson is healthy, they could be playing in a really nice bowl game at that.
Too bad the NFL doesn’t reward 6 win teams like the NCAA does. Then the Bears might make it to the Poulon Weed Eater Bowl this year.
- Arthur Andersen - Thursday, Aug 30, 18 @ 4:42 pm:
Northwestern, OW. The Lovie rebuild is very much a work in process. In an amazing coinkydink, the NCAA cleared MSU of any wrongdoing in re: Larry Nassar one day before football kicks off.

Since Rauner has drug his feet on everything associated with this issue, my guess is partially. The order did not specify immediately paying the back pay, so he has an easy out on that part
I suspect he will have CMS do the ordered calculations, then argue they can’t afford the back pay (non-appropriated) AND can’t afford to place the employees on the proper steps with the current budget.

I don’t see Rauner showing his face at any Labor Events after he got taken to the Woodshed by the ILRB:

I’m pretty high on NU this year too. I think they might surprise a few people beyond what their schedule seems to show.

Lovie, please start working your magic this year with the talent you have.
- OneMan - Thursday, Aug 30, 18 @ 4:45 pm:
If NIU wins the MAC they are going to a subpar bowl, but better than any bowl that U of I goes to.
Dump Cary? He has more Big 10 wins than Lovey

I’d agree… but Rauner is oblivious to his bad breaks sometimes… smart money is is with you. None.
- Fixer - Thursday, Aug 30, 18 @ 4:48 pm:
Thanks RNUG. Not the news I was hoping for, but it’s a realistic point of view to take on the matter.
- Oswego Willy - Thursday, Aug 30, 18 @ 4:53 pm:
Love to see more NIU on Thursdays on ESPN… best MAC coverage, genius TV deal.

Does the money really need to be appropriated? My understanding is the money for all that us owed was to be set aside until the case is over. The case is over and he/CMS lost.

From last year’s schedule, Northwestern swapped out Nevada, Bowling Green and Maryland (all Wildcat wins) for Notre Dame, Akron and Michigan.
All three this year are a big step up in class. The Irish are ranked #12, the Wolverines #14.
And you still have #4 Wisconsin and #11 Michigan State plus Nebraska and Iowa. Not a lot of wiggle room to get six wins.
- 47th Ward - Thursday, Aug 30, 18 @ 5:26 pm:
Nebraska is rebuilding Word, and for whatever reason, NU has had their number since the Huskers joined the Big 10. Of course, with all of the Husker fans descending on Evanston, it’ll feel like a road game.
Iowa won’t be as strong as last year, especially on defense. NU has Rutgers, Minnesota and Illinois after Purdue, all of those are winnable conference games too.
But hey, that’s why they play the games. Go Cats. They are our only hope in Division I.
- Oswego Willy - Thursday, Aug 30, 18 @ 5:35 pm:
I like NU’s number at 7.5 wins.
Nebraska, Iowa, think they will surprise Michigan (“over-ray-ted, clap, clap, clap-clap-clap)… think they might be fun to watch make some noise.

Nice.

I know not many media outlets picked-up on this. Last weekend the bi-centennial plaza had its grand opening complete with several dignitaries giving speeches, Jumbotron boards, Eli Cheesecake and the U. of I. Marching band. Oh…and about 100 people showed up to witness this grand event. My question is why was this event such a bust? I’m sure with a Jumbotron, the bicentennial Committee was expecting to fill the downtown streets of Springfield. I’m throwing this question out there not to lay blame on a busted event but to see if there are any theories as to why this occurred.
- Anonymous - Thursday, Aug 30, 18 @ 6:14 pm:
The ILRB compliance officer ordered Rauner to put Everyone at the proper step October 1st but he has 7 days to object and I’m sure he will on the last day.
- Arthur Andersen - Thursday, Aug 30, 18 @ 6:22 pm:
QC, I don’t want to oversimplify the answer to your question, but cheesecake and speeches in 105 heat index generally won’t draw out a lot of Springfieldians.
- Anonymous - Thursday, Aug 30, 18 @ 7:23 pm:
==My question is why was this event such a bust?==
The 185 degree heat index *may* have contributed to the sparse crowd. Just a hunch.
- Skeptic - Thursday, Aug 30, 18 @ 9:38 pm:
There was and event at the Bicentennial plaza? Who knew? And why were we supposed to be excited about reopening what used to be a street?
I’m atypical in a lot of ways but there’s two more reasons.

I can’t think of two worst choices for governor in my life..

== I’m throwing this question out there not to lay blame on a busted event but to see if there are any theories as to why this occurred. ==
As a Springfield citizen, my attitude was why bother going? It’s just one more out of town consultant’s visionary boondoggle the city and local businesses wasted money on. I’ll be surprised if it gets 1/100th of the foot traffic they were predicting

Rauner will claim it needs to be.
And it may have happened, but I don’t remember a specific court order to set the money aside. Lacking that, you can be sure Rauner used the cash somewhere else.

The Bears actually looked good against Buffalo, could this mean something for the team with the start of the season?

The majority of guys who played last night won’t make the final roster.

You must not have watched the second half.
