Rauner attacks Pritzker over hypocrisy on unions

Thursday, Sep 13, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* I missed this one yesterday when I was under the weather. But now that Rauner is planning to cross a union hotel picket line today, it’s even more timely…

Today, the Rauner campaign is launching a new digital video titled “Turning Up The Heat.”

JB Pritzker claims to support unions and boasts of their endorsements, but his history with workers stands in stark contrast to his words. Currently, union workers are striking at the Hyatt Hotels owned by the Pritzker family and employees of a Pritzker-owned business are accusing of him of union-busting.

Back in 2011, when workers at the Pritzker family’s hotel chain went on strike in the middle of the summer, the hotel turned the winter heat lamps on. This video focuses on the strike, the Pritzker’s use of heats lamps, and features one worker saying, “If the heat didn’t kill us, the heat lamps would.”

JB Pritzker talks a big game, but Illinois workers can’t trust him.

* The ad

* Script

JB Pritzker says he’ll fight for unions.

Pritzker: “It’s why I believe so strongly that we have to stand up for our labor unions in the state.”

But when workers went on strike at the Pritzker family hotel chain, they turned on the heat. In the heat of the summer, they turned heat lamps on workers.

Hyatt Hotel Worker: “They put the heat lamps on us like we were nothing. If the heat didn’t kill us the heat lamps would.”

JB Pritzker says one thing, but his record shows another. Illinois workers can’t trust him

This spot is obviously designed to try and discourage or tamp down union member support for Pritzker.

I think this would be an effective hit, from any other campaign. Hard to see how anyone could be more hostile to labor than Rauner.

  2. - Arsenal - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 9:44 am:

Abysmal. Yet another brand new message, 55 days out, and he steps on it by crossing a picket line.

Union households who vote on labor issues aren’t going to abandon JB. Union households who don’t vote on labor issues…don’t vote on labor issues.

  3. - Anonymous - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 9:45 am:

Who’s his constituency here? Maybe he depresses labor turn out a little. But he’s already done so much to fire them up, it may not matter. And who else will care?

Outsiders may play well during a campaign, but governing is hard. On the job training is hard. And running for reelection is really hard, if that’s how you got in.

  4. - Anonymous - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 9:46 am:

So if Pritzker is hostile to unions, what’s the altaernative? A do nothing governor who hates unions worse?

  5. - Cheryl44 - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 9:47 am:

Says the guy who crossing a picket line.

  6. - Grandson of Man - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 9:52 am:

We really need to have a discussion about unions, because Rauner caused so much damage to Illinois in his fighting against them. Rauner’s philosophy on unions is the right wing rage in the Midwest, among Republican state houses.

I agree, Rauner steps on his message by crossing a picket line today.

Pritzker so far has responded well to attacks. He needs to answer this one with the plain truth of Rauner’s anti-union record.

  7. - don the legend - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 9:52 am:

Rauner is like the scorpion in the tale of the scorpion and the frog

He has to cross the picket line. It’s what he is.

  8. - wordslinger - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 9:53 am:

Not bad for satire. Not so much for self-awareness.

  9. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 9:55 am:

Another failure of the Pritzker Crew,

You’re spending $207,000+ a day… and not a single one of you thought to check on things like this?

… or property tax issues with toilets…

… or not paying state income tax in 2014…

What *exactly* did your Crew do… when it came to your own oppo? Ignore it completely?

No one was concerned about the labor issue past of Hyatt… and this coming up… and the river boat tours…?

I’m confused… what exactly do y’all know about your own candidate?

These labor issues, the toilet issue… the income tax issue… whew… embarrassing missteps… or glaring holes where lacking occurred…

    To the Post,

I’d go all Charles Foster Kane…

“How I will govern is how I have campaigned. With me, you will have s friend in labor as Governor, where Rauner tried to destroy labor at every turn. Being governor IS different than being in business. The choices a business makes, as tough and hurtful to labor as they are, as governor, I know Labor needs that champion after Rauner. I am that champion.”

Workshop it, get back tons of us.

    The ad is a “B-“

    “Why?”

Rauner 2018 is despised by labor. Like Quinn, going after Rauner to teach him a lesson seems to be call of the day. Rauner can’t stop that here.

It’s a “B-“ as it tries only to tamp down, not secure any votes.

  10. - Al - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 9:57 am:

Rauner will receive materially fewer Union votes this November than four years ago.

  11. - I Miss Bentohs - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 10:12 am:

    D-

Those that vote for Unions know Rauner is not Union friendly.
Those that dislike Unions are now confused as to which person to vote for.

  12. - SSL - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 10:14 am:

    JB’s not credible.

  13. - Yiddishcowboy - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 10:14 am:

This is laughable…and sad. Rauner has no business commenting on JB allegedly being bad for workers. I’d like to give Rauner a comment like Debra Messing recently provided to Susan Sarandon.

  14. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 10:14 am:

I had a discussion with a Dem last weekend about Pritzker and labor.

“Pritzker has like $3 billion to worry about. That’s a lot to keep track of, including labor contracts.”

Pritzker wants to be governor, with the state budget well over $37 billion and labor contracts too.

Pritzker has a staff and spending $207K… a day, every day… and they can’t figure out their own oppo?

  15. - Ron Burgundy - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 10:19 am:

Not much value here, other than to sow some discord amongst JB’s base.

  16. - Duopoly - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 10:19 am:

=he steps on it by crossing a picket line.=

Mistake? Duality is Rauner’s brand though.

  17. - The Dude Abides - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 10:25 am:

This ad might have had some positive effect for Rauner if not for his obsessive dislike of Unions.I don’t think Illinois Union members are dumb enough to sit this election out for this obvious reason.

  18. - Duopoly - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 10:27 am:

=These labor issues, the toilet issue… the income tax issue… whew… embarrassing missteps… or glaring holes where lacking occurred… =

Does not bode well for a JB governorship. Like Quinn superficially populist and anti-worker with his own workforce.

He’s positioning himself as “I’m bad, but Rauner’s worse”

It works in the 2-party system, but man, what a failure.

  19. - Pudent - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 10:28 am:

The best I can muster up for this is a D. The last thing that Rauner wants to do is get into an argument over who’s more hostile towards unions.

  20. - BlueDogDem - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 10:29 am:

Dear Gov. Rauner. This is where you union haters fail. Negotiating a tough contract is part of the process. It is to be expected.

  21. - Fax Machine - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 10:47 am:

This why 150’s McCann gambit might backfire - union guys turned off by Pritzker have some one to vote for. If it were just Pritzker & Rauner they would have voted Pritzker but now they might vote McCann.

  22. - Saluki - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 10:47 am:

    Heat lamps….

  23. - Grandson of Man - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 10:53 am:

“This why 150’s McCann gambit might backfire - union guys turned off by Pritzker have some one to vote for.”

I don’t think the “gambit” was intended for union members (see Rauner vs. Ives). Focus…focus…

  24. - kitty - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 11:10 am:

Rauner is the most anti-labor governor in the history of IL. The ad will appeal to his base who want to destroy the middle class with policies that enrich the wealthy, but won’t likely result in any additional votes for Rauner or a large enough diversion to McCann to make a differnece.

  25. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 11:17 am:

    It’s possible J.B.Pritzker is a hypocrite.

It’s also possible that J.B.Pritzker doesn’t have the vote to override his relatives. From what I’ve read about his family, they aren’t a loveydovey clan that would throw brother a bone to help him clinch this thing. More like people that would turn heat lamps on hotel maids.

  26. - Truthteller - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 11:34 am:

Anyone who would take seriously Rauner’s accusation that someone is anti-union would believe Harvey Weinstein if he accused someone of being a sexual predator.
Rauner’s the wrong guy to be making such charges

  27. - Demoralized - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 11:57 am:

This is rich. The Governor despises unions. We already know he isn’t doing any fighting for the unions and regardless of this spot the unions know it too.

  28. - Anon0091 - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 12:13 pm:

    Willy,

I get it. You think the Pritzker crew completely failed in oppo research because of the tapes and other stuff. But on this? Everyone knew about the Hyatt labor issues including the folks organized labor who got behind JB. It seems they concluded that since JB had zero to do with running Hyatt…ever…that this was a non issue. So you’re mad at the Pritzker crew on this why? What would you have wanted them to do? Hold a presser condemning Hyatt for actions they took ten years ago?

  29. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 12:23 pm:

    - Anon0091 -

===So you’re mad at the Pritzker crew on this why?===

I’m not mad at them, lol.

I’m pointing out a real lacking of knowing their own oppo, and handling the business of it before it got as as it is… toilets, income tax, labor issues, what, all of it is “meh, we’re all goid@

And your wondering why a Rauner is vakkingbiut the “hypocrisy” of these moments, they’re self-inflicting.

  30. - Anonymous - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 12:59 pm:

    Bruce Rauner …Defender of Unions…Wha?…say again…once again?

  31. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 1:09 pm:

===So you’re mad at the Pritzker crew on this why?===

    “It’s not personal, it’s business…”

  32. - Anonymous - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 1:47 pm:

Sam McCann is looking better everyday. I think Sam could win.

  33. - Honeybear - Friday, Sep 14, 18 @ 9:25 am:

    My New Years Resolution
    No assumptions
I’m going to continue to act as if it’s
    Neck and neck
    Because I believe
Rauner has yet to play his
    October Impasse surprise
    The greatest OODA loop
4th District Appelate will declare Impasse
    Afscme contract
    He will impose that day
    Forcing a strike
    One swift move
    Rauner has his boogie man
    Because Madigan
    Isn’t covering no achievements
He needs to rally the base
    Against unions
    Pritzker is the Hill
    Afscme needs to triumph
    Or die on.
