Rauner’s new anti-Pritzker TV ad is a Downstate hot-button smorgasbord
Saturday, Sep 15, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller [Reader comments now open on this post.] * “You know JB Pritzker wants to raise your taxes like there’s no tomorrow,” a new Bruce Rauner campaign TV ad begins. “But it gets worse,” the announcer says. Pritzker wants to “ban sporting rifles,” and tax handguns at 100 percent, according to the ad clearly aimed at Downstate voters (but which is also running on Comcast Sports Net Chicago). “He calls his government-run healthcare plan ‘Obamacare 2,’” the ad warns viewers. “Pritzker even wants every city in Illinois to be a sanctuary city,” the announcer claims. “No wonder Pritzker campaigned with a left-wing extremist organization leading the ‘resist’ movement,” the announcer says as Pritzker is shown wildly cheering at a rally. “JB Pritzker. Just another tax raising, big spending Chicago liberal.” Watch it… …Adding… McCann…
…Adding… Politico…

If there’s no tomorrow, why levy taxes at all?

It’s still funny to me that McCann is saying with a straight face he thinks he can win running to the right of Rauner. In IL.
And this ad seems to have Rauner running to the right as well. Like his hit against JB for the “resist” movement - the only people getting inflamed about that are die-hard Trumpers, as in the farthest right group. I see doing this stuff in primaries, but in the general?
Maybe I’m out of touch, but it seems like Rauner and McCann are competing for second place.

TL/DR: “Last week’s ‘I’m sorry’ speech was all horse hockey.”

50 days out and another all new, all different message. This one with the possibility of energizing the Democratic base.
Just terrible.
- Da Big Bad Wolf - Monday, Sep 17, 18 @ 9:27 am:
Pritzker’s idea of letting people buy into Medicaid is a good idea and I wonder why the current governor isn’t trying to push it. It won’t cost taxpayers anything, added people to Medicaid rolls can only strengthen Mediciad by adding more money, it takes away the incentive for people to get junk insurance, (and future personal bankruptcy of the individuals who get junk insurance). Strange to use it as a talking point against Pritzker.
As for gun control, perhaps like Erica Harold he has evolved. 20 years later this is where he stands. https://chicago.suntimes.com/crime/gun-control-jb-pritzker-chicago-shootings-op-ed/

If Rauner approved the message, it has to be lies. He wouldn’t know the truth, if it sat down beside him.

Very effective ad, I guess the headline makes sense if you define “downstate” as every county outside of Cook. FOID numbers are way up in collar and NW Illinois counties. Firearms taxes/bans will be important to those voters as well.
- wordslinger - Monday, Sep 17, 18 @ 9:40 am:
So…. vote for McCann?
Shouldn’t Rauner be directly asking for votes in this spot?
- Arsenal - Monday, Sep 17, 18 @ 9:51 am:
==FOID numbers are way up in collar and NW Illinois counties. Firearms taxes/bans will be important to those voters as well.==
Not every FOID card owner gets suckered by every NRA scare-tactic.

Citing a 21-year-old Sun-Times piece seems a little desperate.
- Oswego Willy - Monday, Sep 17, 18 @ 10:04 am:
Bruce Rauner *IS* an uber-left, costal, limousine liberal who signed a budget with no reforms and a 32% tax increase.
McCann is probably better… if you’re a Republican.
Rauner is a Raunerite.
Oh.
This doesn’t make Rauner more likable, so there’s that too.
Failed ad, failed messaging.

Rauner’s Southern Strategy.
The new 3G strategy must be Guns, God and immiGrants.

LBX: ditto…I saw this ad in MI over the weekend, and it just made me so irate..,the MSM sources have a bit of a staleness to them…pulling at straws much Bruce?
- Anon0091 - Monday, Sep 17, 18 @ 10:49 am:
47, I’m confused. I thought Rauner was big on dropping his Gs. Now he has a strategy built on Gs? Pick a lane, Bruce.

Texas Red @ (;37 ==Very effective ad ==
Agreed. I had already made up my mind, but if I had not, this ad would have convinced me to vote for JB. And I vote mostly Republican, and voted for Rauner in 14. Please, governor, go away.
- Anonymous - Monday, Sep 17, 18 @ 11:40 am:
Rauner is just another extremely desperate ex-Governor?
I doubt everyone in Southern Illinois is as ignorant as he may hope?
I actually know quite a few libruls downstate.
Many of them aren’t buyin’ Rauner’s forked tongue antics.
- Oswego Willy - Monday, Sep 17, 18 @ 11:46 am:
===Problem is, he’s cheering at Chicago’s Gay Pride Parade.===
Bruce Rauner has Diana Rauner’s social agenda.
If you don’t grasp that, you’re “probably” in the 24% approval Rauner enjoys.
Conservatives were betrayed, pro-life voters were betrayed. The only people not betrayed are those who wanted a “California social agenda”… signed by a Republican.
- Levois - Monday, Sep 17, 18 @ 11:57 am:
I’m going to guess those voters whom he is targeting this to probably won’t believe this ad.
- Back to the Future - Monday, Sep 17, 18 @ 3:21 pm:
Sorry Team Bruce, but the shot of JBP shouting and shaking his hands had me thinking the video was taken at Soldier Field during a Bears game. I just can’t shake the image of JBP as a Super Bears Fan. Yes, I know that is not what you meant, but I just can’t help but being stuck on that image.
That was one awful Ad except for the cheering JB part.

==No wonder Pritzker campaigned with a left-wing extremist organization leading the ‘resist’ movement==
I try to keep up on things, but I have no idea what they are talking about.
