Rate the governor’s new TV ad

Friday, Oct 5, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Press release…

Today, the Rauner campaign is launching a new TV ad titled “Change Doesn’t Come Easy.”

In the ad, Governor Rauner directly addresses the voters of Illinois about how important this election is in the fight for the future of the state. Governor Rauner makes the choice voters face in November clear: “We could give up, and give total control to Madigan, Pritzker and the Machine that made this mess, or do the tough, honest things to save Illinois.”

* The ad

* Script…

You sent me to Springfield to fix our state. We’ve done some good. We’ve stopped a lot of bad. But like you, I’m frustrated because we haven’t done enough. After decades of corruption, change doesn’t come easy. We could give up, and give total control to Madigan, Pritzker and the Machine that made this mess, or do the tough, honest things to save Illinois. This might be our last chance.

Still won’t wear a tie… if you’re gonna go down, go down on your own terms.

  2. - Exit 59 - Friday, Oct 5, 18 @ 9:03 am:

EVEN IF… You are CORRECT… YOU are not the guy.

  3. - JS Mill - Friday, Oct 5, 18 @ 9:05 am:

14 dead veterans, thousands poisoned. Financial chaos.

    You have done enough.

    November 6th is moving day.

  4. - Horrible - Friday, Oct 5, 18 @ 9:09 am:

As Greg Hinz said, it looks like Rauner has resigned himself to losing. This is a horrible ad whose only aim is a failed attempt to say “I tried” and save face with his social circle.

  5. - XDNR - Friday, Oct 5, 18 @ 9:09 am:

…We’ve done some good. But done allot more bad… There fixed it for you Bruce.

==This might be our last chance.–

Repent, sayeth the messiah, for the end is nigh.

In nearly four years, the dude hasn’t demonstrated that he can competently run a lemonade stand, but claims we’re all doomed without him.

I’m thinking that over the last 200 years people here have been able to muddle through in the face of some pretty severe, at times existencial, challenges.

What an egomaniac this one, for reasons I can’t see.

Once again, attacking others. Once again, having nothing to run on.

Real weak for an incumbent. Compare this with a Kasich or Baker. Baker has high approval ratings and a great ad on his accomplishments.

Rauner caused more per capita damage than any one politician in Illinois history. If anyone should be voted out before it’s too late, it’s Rauner.

  8. - anon - Friday, Oct 5, 18 @ 9:16 am:

Wow, not the inspiring leader I would feel good about voting for! He has nothing to run on, so he simply uses fear, and phrases like “last chance.” He had his chance. He needed to be Charlie Baker. He chose a different path. He could have brought about change, but he failed as a leader. Pure and simple. His time is done. Illinois is ready for real leadership.

  9. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Oct 5, 18 @ 9:17 am:

Rauner is still not likable, still not compelling, more of a reminder of how much of a failure Bruce is, and the damage he’s done to Illinois.

===We could give up, and give total control to Madigan, Pritzker and the Machine that made this mess, or do the tough, honest things to save Illinois. This might be our last chance.===

Successful incumbents need not worry about being any alternative… to themselves.

It’s pathetically sad, it shows an incumbent as an alternative, meaning, “I failed, true, but… “

    This will not help.

    It’s a “D+”

  10. - siualum - Friday, Oct 5, 18 @ 9:19 am:

Should’ve ended the ad with the sound of a toilet flushing in the background.

  11. - Trapped in the 'burbs - Friday, Oct 5, 18 @ 9:20 am:

What are your accomplishments Bruce? Come on, we’ll wait. Name something YOU did. Can’t take credit for something that happened in spite of you. Also, if you use the word “honest”, it only reminds us that you’re NOT honest.

  12. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Oct 5, 18 @ 9:21 am:

    Perspective to this ad?

    Well…

Tribune Editorial Board endorsement of Candidate Rauner, 2014…

===Ask yourself, what does Quinn talk about other than his disdain for Rauner? What does Quinn say he would do with another four years? What new economic solutions does he offer? Why, exactly, is Quinn running?===

    Something to ponder, no?

  13. - A Jack - Friday, Oct 5, 18 @ 9:36 am:

What would a business do to an employee with a four year contract that didn’t do anything and in some cases made the business lose money? Would that business rehire that employee because he has a proven track record of four years of failure?

  14. - Demoralized - Friday, Oct 5, 18 @ 9:49 am:

I think it’s a bad ad if you’re looking to eat into JB’s lead. He’s repeating the same message over and over and that message doesn’t seem to be moving the needle in any significant way.

  15. - Langhorne - Friday, Oct 5, 18 @ 10:00 am:

    Wheres the carhartt?

    we havent done enough. Agreed
Change doesnt come easy. Yep, 60/30
This might be our (campaigns) last chance. Fixed it.

  16. - Dance Band on the Titanic - Friday, Oct 5, 18 @ 10:07 am:

He comes across like he is completely disinterested and merely reading a script as opposed to someone who has a heartfelt conviction that he is doing his best to accomplish the right things.

D- He is wasting his money on this spot.

  17. - Rabid - Friday, Oct 5, 18 @ 10:08 am:

Four “we” two “you” one “our” the people’s champion

  18. - Maestro - Friday, Oct 5, 18 @ 10:11 am:

Sounds desperate because he is. He’s done a bad job and it is reflected in his polling numbers. I hope this is the last time we will see him on television as governor. If it is really as bad as he says it is, why doesn’t he just move out? I think he has enough cash. I’ve lived here my whole life, I like Illinois and don’t want to go anywhere.

  19. - unspun - Friday, Oct 5, 18 @ 10:16 am:

This is a feeble ad that smacks of desperation, and stars a Governor that is profoundly unpopular. It says, “Remember me, the guy you can’t stand? I haven’t done anything specific worth mentioning in my own ad”. Is he trying to lose?

  20. - Deadbeat Conservative - Friday, Oct 5, 18 @ 10:33 am:

    == Why, exactly, is Quinn running?=== ==

    Squeezy.
Where Quinn failed is that he tried to be more like candidate Rauner.

  21. - Jocko - Friday, Oct 5, 18 @ 10:33 am:

We’ve done some good (for me and others on the northshore cocktail party circuit). We’ve stopped a lot of bad (public sector employees from getting their step raises).

    Fixed it for you.

  22. - Pundent - Friday, Oct 5, 18 @ 10:55 am:

What amazes me about Rauner was how steadfast he was in his belief that the “change” he wanted was the “change” we wanted. His failure lies in his unwillingness to acknowledge that he could never get the 60/30 needed to embrace his ideas. This was never about “Madigan.” It was always much bigger than that.

  23. - Soccermom - Friday, Oct 5, 18 @ 10:58 am:

Bruce Rauner. Before it’s too late.

  24. - Contract disputin' - Friday, Oct 5, 18 @ 11:18 am:

This would be a fine closing ad in the fourth week of October. Running it now is hanging it up three weeks early.

  25. - Truthseeker - Friday, Oct 5, 18 @ 12:15 pm:

    Epitaph for this Governor . . . . . .”He didn’t listen”

  26. - Chicago 20 - Friday, Oct 5, 18 @ 12:36 pm:

    Change Doesn’t Come Easy?

    Rauner is wrong again.

It will be so incredibly easy to vote for JB that most of Illinois will vote for a different Governor.
