“Voting for any Democrat gets you all of that”
Thursday, Oct 25, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller * Considering the disturbing news of the past 24 hours, perhaps the Todd Ricketts-founded Future 45 ought to pull down this ad that’s currently running on Chicago TV…
|
- Northsider (the original) - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 12:05 pm:
Way to alienate a 3rd generation season ticket holder. I don’t want my money going to this and I’m really struggling about whether or not to renew.
- Demoralized - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 12:05 pm:
Definitely inappropriate at this particular time.
And it’s an over the top ad at any time.
- Roman - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 12:13 pm:
I guess they could be buying time on shows that tend to attract conservative viewership in order to rally the base. Otherwise, the ad’s question (“is that what you want?”) is going to be answered with a “yes” by most Chicago area television viewers.
- SWIL_Voter - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 12:15 pm:
Right wing domestic terrorism has been steadily ramping up for 30 years, culminating in the election of a president who encourages his supporters to beat up protestors, use 2nd Amendment solutions on political opponents, calls to jail political opponents, and calls the press an enemy of the people.
Yet somehow college kids cussing at their representative is violence and representative of mainstream Democratic Party.
- Boone's is Back - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 12:16 pm:
Running an ad in the Chicago media market that tells people “not to vote for any democrat” is like advertising against John Lester for the Cy Young award in Wrigley.
- 47th Ward - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 12:18 pm:
Mike Madigan and the violent, global, leftist, communist, Nancy Pelosi, gridlock, impeachment mobs he controls.
Sheesh. When you frame your political opponents in these terms, you encourage people to view their fellow Americans as the enemy.
Have we hit bottom yet?
- Stormfield - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 12:18 pm:
Is there a candidate pool for a “Winning Bigly Award” for most egregious use of hyperbole in an ad? If so, I’m all in to nominate this one.
- Driving a car - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 12:19 pm:
This is vile and I am just not sure how the Republican base continues to gobble it up without a second thought.
All they have to do is say something and the (vast majority) of that party believes it to be true. Not saying the same thing isn’t true to an extent with Dems, but this is absolute insanity.
The leader of their party just admitted he’s a Nationalist, his favorite topics of scorn just got sent bombs in the mail, and yet we as Dems are made out to be the bad guys?
How can this continue to happen?
- flea - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 12:25 pm:
Northsider..switch to a real team..Go
Cards!
- Ole General - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 12:27 pm:
Northsider, I’ll take your tickets. How much?
- Rob Warren - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 12:27 pm:
That’s where your money goes Cub fans! No getting away from that…
- Amalia - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 12:36 pm:
yet another reason I’m happy I’m not a Cubs fan.
- Oswego Willy - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 12:40 pm:
It’s all the Trunpkins have.
When I meet with Todd Ricketts I’ll discuss this with him.
This is not what works in Illinois build a governing majority.
- Soccermom - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 12:40 pm:
This is why I stopped being a diehard, bleed-Cubby-blue, let’s-name-the-baby-Ryno-Sutcliffe Cubs fan on Nov. 7. Haven’t watched a game since.
- Jocko - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 12:41 pm:
==smears and death threats…100% government-run health care==
I guess they haven’t read Trump’s tweets or heard of Medicare.
- Grandson of Man - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 12:42 pm:
That withered, penniless person begging for sustenance every day, because Obama, Pelosi, Madigan and every Democrat wrecked the economy and turned America into the worst blend of all former communist countries, is Todd Ricketts.
- ItsMillerTime - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 12:52 pm:
Don’t worry Rich, the conservative media machine is already giving out marching orders to there followers on how to ignore this. I have family members who assure me that we can’t rush to conclusions about this and it could just as easily be a bernie supporter who did it or it’s a hoax perpetuated by the left to gin up the base.
Just to be clear, I do not believe this and find it insane but unfortunately I have family members that take this seriously. You can already see on Fox News how they are trying to make it look like CNN is the bad guy because they didn’t pat trump on the head and tell him good job for kinda condemning what happened.
- TheInvisibleMan - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 12:54 pm:
The Cubs are just a baseball team, not my identity.
After 35 years, I’m no longer buying a ticket or any merchandise until the ownership changes.

- Because I said so.... - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 12:58 pm:
oops, meant to include, I have been pretty sure we’ve hit bottom a few times but the floor keeps dropping.
- Chris P. Bacon - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 1:00 pm:
Wait, what? Pull it down? I’m sure Democrats would say that.
For crying out loud, just 2 weeks ago Hillary Clinton said on tv in a highly publicized CNN interview that she can’t be civil with Republicans trying to wipe out what she stands for. So shocker that people might follower her lead in being uncivil.
With so much leftwing anger and violence out there this is EXACTLY the right time for that ad. Dems hate having their incivility and violence exposed. We all get it. That’s too bad.
- Mr. Smith - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 1:02 pm:
Wow. Maybe the best response is to have pictures of home-made bombs, Trump mocking a disabled journalist, Proud Boys beating up protesters, and a ticker of the growing federal defecit running with no sound at all until the final screen where the text appears and a voice reads “See what happens when you vote Republican?”
We’d never do it, because we wouldn’t. But I swear, going high when they go low isn’t getting us very far…
- Huh? - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 1:02 pm:
=Have we hit bottom yet?=
Some one keeps digging the hole, so the bottom keeps lowering.
- Cheryl44 - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 1:12 pm:
I have never been big on the GOP, but I’ve kept an open mind. Now? I will never vote Republican again.
- Oswego Willy - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 1:15 pm:
===I will never vote Republican again.===
If Rauner were to lose, I’ll be watching carefully how the ILGOP regroups.
If Pritzker were to win, I’ll be watching carefully how his Crew looks at Republicans vs. Raunerites, and knowing the difference … and being inclusive to the governing.
- Under Influenced - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 1:18 pm:
Where is the “outrage” from the Champaign News Gazette for this dishonest and misleading ad…..
- Anonymous - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 1:19 pm:
Northsider, a little tip—Enjoy that ‘16 WS title. Save your money, the Cubbies will be lucky to make the playoffs in the future, don’t renew.
- Ike - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 1:25 pm:
Chris - wow! So just because Hilary said something about political civility, you will condone attempted harm/murder on democrats?
You’re a lowlife
- McGuppin - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 1:27 pm:
Cubs fans are complicit.
- Norseman - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 1:31 pm:
=== Have we hit bottom yet? ===
No. Vilification has been an effective propaganda tool for ages. We’ve depended upon our leaders to adhere to some semblance of a norm to moderate this type of behavior. The problem is we don’t have GOP leaders who want to moderate their behavior. Add social media to this mix and we’re in a lot of doo doo.
- wordslinger - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 1:38 pm:
–So shocker that people might follower her lead in being uncivil.–
Yeah, Trump and Co. were sweethearts until Hillary hurt their fee-fees, a couple of weeks ago.
Being a 24/7/365 victim must be exhausting for a grown man. But I sense you enjoy your work.
- Demoralized - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 1:40 pm:
Chris P Bacon:
You been under a rock the past day. It’s the wrong time for this ad because of the recent bomb scares. You’re part of the problem if you think this is ok.
- Rusty Bridges - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 1:42 pm:
After witnessing the lengths the left-wing mob went to in trying to destroy that beautiful Kavanaugh family, there’s nothing they won’t do.
- Demoralized - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 1:48 pm:
==there’s nothing they won’t do==
Is that you Lou Dobbs?
- Jibba - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 1:50 pm:
Chris P. I too might have a hard time being civil to people who have been chanting for 2 years that I should be locked up. Mention that next time at your next torchlight rally.
- DarkHorse - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 1:56 pm:
I’ve been busy at work, didn’t realize Steve Bannon and Pat Buchanan were advising Ricketts.
- DarkHorse - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 2:00 pm:
Dear Oswego,
Re: GOP regroup if Rauner loses - the real long term damage is that addiction to Rauner’s money has caused the GOP donor base to atrophy. This makes the ILGOP vulnerable to take over by another deep pocketed oligarch, like Ricketts.
- Da Big Bad Wolf - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 2:00 pm:
==After witnessing the lengths the left-wing mob went to in trying to destroy that beautiful Kavanaugh family, there’s nothing they won’t do.==
What left wing mob? Three accusers, and some lawyers?

LOLOLOLOL
- Not so silent majority - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 2:36 pm:
My husband stopped rooting for his beloved Cubs a year after Ricketts took over. He’s now obsessed with British Premiere League. And what ever happened to that ‘Truth in Campaign Advertising’ Bill that we had oh several years back? Sure could use it now.
- Steve Rogers - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 2:42 pm:
–Have we hit bottom yet?–
I’m not sure we’re even remotely close to the bottom yet.
- 47th Ward - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 2:47 pm:
===“Voting for any Democrat gets you all of that”===
But wait, there’s more. If you act now, you’ll receive a complimentary Rainbow flag AND a Co-Exist bumper sticker, perfect for your Prius. Just pay separate handling and use order code: DNC.
- Soccermom - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 3:07 pm:
47th - That’s enough with the Prius jokes.
- Oswego Willy - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 3:17 pm:
===…the real long term damage is that addiction to Rauner’s money has caused the GOP donor base to atrophy. This makes the ILGOP vulnerable to take over by another deep pocketed oligarch, like Ricketts.===
While not wrong in the slightest, the rub is those willing to be bought, (all we’re haggling about is the price?) can’t have a party without people.
You can have $50 million in an account… but not one volunteer, or elected, or…
I’ll be watching real close. The Kasich style model, the 1994 model with a diverse leadership… that wins here.
Are they wanting to Win?
- 17% Solution - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 3:21 pm:
“or it’s a hoax perpetuated by the left to gin up the base.”
Unlike Frank Underwood arrainging getting a brick thrown at his own home, dealing with bombs will get a person a LOT of prison time and to what benefit? There is no clear group or person to blame this on.

Why would Ricketts be any different than Rauner or Trump? This is what the Republican Party is now, and the kind of people who lead it.
- Anonymous - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 3:49 pm:
==This is vile and I am just not sure how the Republican base continues to gobble it up without a second thought.==
If you are thinking of the Republican base as good people, that will cause cognitive dissonance.
- Pick a Name - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 4:06 pm:
Just curious Anon 3:46, what kind of people are they? And, do you think the people who lead the D party are better?
- Pundent - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 4:15 pm:
=And, do you think the people who lead the D party are better?=
Yes, demonstrably. And I say that as an individual who has voted for many Republicans over the years. The party is currently morally bankrupt and out of ideas.
- Pick a Name - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 4:34 pm:
Pundent, I refer you to Maxine Waters, Keith Ellison, Nancy Pelosi, Bernie Sanders, Chuck Schumer and Feinstein.
That should be enough for Exhibit A
- Anonymous - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 4:40 pm:
Northsider, not sure why this bothers you but Aroldis Chapman and Addison Russell does not.

MWNMNWWNM, don’t come back. If you do, I know where you work.

You have a serious case of whataboutism.
- Soothsayer - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 6:10 pm:
I do not know when I will stop being amazed by the cognizant dissonance today in society as well as these in comments. Chris? Rusty? Pick-a-name? I can not even wrap my mind around your comments. Somehow, of all the delusion, the comment about the Kavanaugh family’s beauty is the most striking to me in the moment. I guess readjustment of the term is fully in line with Trumps new moniker for Ted Cruz. The elimination of objective beauty maybe the most recent quality to succumb to the brainwashing of a portion of America.
- Pick a Name - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 7:36 pm:
Anon 5:05, who does Bernie caucus with? His beliefs are very left thinking.
- Robert M Roman - Friday, Oct 26, 18 @ 5:53 am:
As a charter DSA member, I can assure you this hyperventilating is nothing new, and you’ll be seeing more of it. The ideologues behind it are seriously tone deaf. But it has a long way to go before we hit bottom. Back in the 60s and 70s, we had a really bad case of political violence from all parts of the political spectrum. I’d rather not go there again, thank you.
