Late afternoon/early evening precinct reports

Tuesday, Nov 6, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* I’ll have live election results from our great friend Scott Kennedy at Illinois Election Data tonight. Meanwhile, the Saline County Clerk is also ejecting Republican poll watchers…

Sheesh.

* The usual suspect…

* Some are uncharitably calling this party “the wake at the Drake”…

* From the DCCC…

Hey Rich,

Saw your post about the Rauner campaign bragging about how they’ve done 70,000 doors since last Saturday. I know Casten’s campaign has done 102,000 doors in IL-06 between Saturday and Monday night alone.

…Adding… The Rauner campaign says they actually knocked on 70,000 doors on Saturday alone.

* DuPage allegations

A DuPage County Forest Preserve Commissioner candidate faced problems at the polls in Hinsdale, where he was told he was an inactive voter. Irfan Ibrahim, a Hinsdale resident and a candidate for District 3 Commissioner for the forest preserve, was first asked for two forms of ID and was then told he was not an active voter.

Ibrahim posted on his Facebook page, showing that he has voted in every general election since 2010.

“If you think that voter suppression is not real, it is real,” Ibrahim said in his Facebook video.

“I’m going back out there again to let them know that I am voting today, up and down the ballot,” Ibrahim said. “Voter suppression will not be accepted.”

* They’ve been busy today…

* Block Club Chicago

The city has seen [633,597 ballots cast as of 2:50 pm, which is 42 percent turnout], including ballots sent by mail and early voters, said Jim Allen, spokesman for the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners. That puts Chicago on track to reach 50 percent or higher turnout by the end of voting at 7 p.m., he said. […]

“If the pattern follows similar to the primary, we’ll see significant numbers like we did this morning and we could be crossing 50 percent,” Allen said. Chicago could “easily cross — after the evening rush — we should definitely, easily cross the 50 percent [mark]. So now it’s gonna be do we reach 53, 56, what?”

705,869 ballots were cast in the city in 2010 (when Pat Quinn won). 668,033 were cast in 2014 (when Quinn lost). 670,222 were cast in 2006 (when the Democrats swept the board).

* Another voter…

* More long lines in Urbana…

* Sen. Sandoval likes to make stuff about him…

* A good hashtag to follow tonight if you care about other state legislatures…

* Yum…

* Please spare us…

* What are you seeing and hearing out there? Let us in on the scoop!

…Adding… Could be a jammed room tonight…

…Adding… Ask and ye shall receive…

By comparison, 719,090 suburban Cook residents voted in 2010 and 696,403 voted in 2014. So, they’re already way over both of those totals.

…Adding… Wow…

…Adding… Wow again…

    Steady a little larger than normal in my pretty much uncontested races. House Bustos…Jill Tracy write in opponent. Shall we call the statewide now based on Chicago turnout.

  2. - Northsider - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 4:21 pm:

    Attention all Chicago Mayoral candidates: Whichever of you goes up with ads tomorrow loses my vote in February. Give us at least a 24-hour respite!

  3. - DuPage Saint - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 4:26 pm:

    Theoretically as more and more people get used to voting early and ads and politicians tell them to vote early shouldn’t the early turn out be expected to be heavy with a corresponding drop off on Election Day voting?
    Guess I will know by tomorrow

  4. - low level - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 4:27 pm:

    Good ole’ Champaign county. I saw the same thing 26 years ago. GOP county clerks didnt like students voting then and it seems they dont like it now. So much for “Chicago style” politics.

  5. - illini - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 4:27 pm:

    I am so encouraged about what I am seeing at UIUC. So much different than what it was in ‘72 when I got my MA.

    Should Rodney be worried?

  6. - You could say that, I couldn't - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 4:28 pm:

    The Saline County thing is weird. As best as I can tell, the Saline County Clerk is a Republican, so it’s unlikely to be institutional bias against Republicans, right?

  7. - Fixer - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 4:29 pm:

    Does the Saline County Clerk not understand what job she was elected to or is she just being ignorant?

  8. - Archpundit - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 4:30 pm:

    Dietz called Clerk and the sent over some more help. Good for her and her attitude

    ““We’re seeing a big increase in the last hour. It was real quiet at ISU all morning. And now there’s a big long line. And we’re excited to see those students get out and vote. And they’re gonna be in line again because of the construction (at the Bone Student Center) and the smaller room we’re in. We’re probably looking at a two-hour wait line at ISU,” Michael said.”

  9. - low level - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 4:32 pm:

    Ilini- you should have seen 1992 when Dennis Bing only put 2 or 3 machines in the student precincts. Kids waited for 3 hours - in the rain. Then Prussing won by 34 votes.

  10. - zatoichi - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 4:33 pm:

    Voted in Jacksonville. Church lot was filled, but inside plenty of help and plenty of booths. Went electronic and was done in about 10 minutes. Voting for local offices was easy since there were no Democrats running for any local seat.

    I was on my way north on I-57 for work at 8:30 this morning and met what I believe was Governor Rauner’s campaign bus going south near Champaign IL. Not a big deal, but kind of interesting to me. I am kind of hoping this is the last ride for our “too courageous” Governor.

    I’ve seen that gilbert villegas sign before…

  15. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 4:48 pm:

    Oh… also…

    Can someone acquire a “Rauner Failed” sign for me, if they’re laying around. Just don’t tell them it’s for me. Let’s keep it quiet, between us.

  16. - Backbencher - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 4:50 pm:

    Between the low(er) turnout in a midterm and that college students have qualified for absentee ballots so they register at home (how I voted in college), it must be hard to judge turnout for college students in an off-year election.

  17. - Montrose - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 4:52 pm:

    Those voting totals make me happy.

  18. - Leslie K - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 4:55 pm:

    I voted this morning and noticed that the usual crew wasn’t out front intimidating people (NW side of Chicago/38th Ward). I though it was just too cold and windy for them, but drove by on the way home and didn’t see them either. Refreshing, but confusing.

  19. - illini - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 5:06 pm:

    @low level - Champaign County has always had a love/hate relationship with the student population.

  20. - Finally Retired - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 5:07 pm:

    #53 Springfield Bible Church. I was #777 at 4:30. About 3/4 of booths were being used at that time. Said it’s been steady all day.

  21. - RIJ - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 5:10 pm:

    Standing in line at my Rock Island precinct. Problem with the tabulating machine - it seems as though the number of votes cast does not match the machine count. They are 4-6 votes off. Also some issue with someone who did not early or mail vote, but was indicated as ineligible to vote, but sorted it out. This is actually the only weirdness I’ve seen in 25 years voting in this precinct.

  22. - illini - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 5:30 pm:

    @Willy - If I could find a “Rauner Failed” sign anywhere in Southern Illinois I would personally deliver it to you. But I would expect a few of your favorite brews in exchange.

  23. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 5:34 pm:

    - illini -

    That’s incredibly gracious of you, and of course, Yuenglings would await.

    If I’m at all honest, it’s more of a fun tweak, as much as a want of the sign.

    Like…

    I’d like one of Jason’s plastic Slurpee cups, with the state seal and “State Senator Jason Plummer” on it… that he’ll be using in his office…

    Hope you’re well - illini -, should be a fun night and new session

  24. - RNUG - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 5:39 pm:

    FWIW, I heard a report that one precinct in the Mechanicsburg / Dawson area had over 66% turnout by 2:30pm. People are coming out to vote.

  25. - Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 5:44 pm:

    I just read that Chicago was 48% around a half hour ago and might make it to 54%, highest midterm since 1986.

  26. - illini - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 5:49 pm:

    I’ll take that challenge, but with no promises. And Yuenglings would be perfect. Would you settle for a cozi cup holder for that Yuengling?

  27. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 5:51 pm:

    - illini -

    As far as I’m concerned… “mission accomplished”.

    Thanks.

    Last hour… wow, it’s almost over.

  28. - Chi Native - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 5:57 pm:

    As of 5:56 PM, 876 voters in Springfield Capital Townships 4/5/53. Pretty good turn out compared to other elections

  29. - Lester Holt’s Mustache - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 6:00 pm:

    ==FWIW, I heard a report that one precinct in the Mechanicsburg / Dawson area had over 66% turnout by 2:30pm. People are coming out to vote.==

    Can confirm. Total was 194 at 3:00. Left the library (which is next to the polling place) a few minutes ago, lots of folks still coming in. Doesn’t sound like a big number, but this is a tiny district so turnout is definitely way up

  30. - NoUseForAName - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 6:00 pm:

    35th precinct, Spfld, at St. Agnes. I was number 718 at about 4:20, every booth had someone in it and there a couple people checking in at every precinct. Judges said it had been steady all day.

    Outside was more interesting. About a half dozen police cruisers when I pulled up. They were surrounding a guy dressed in back with a hat and scarf on his face. Not sure what he had been doing but had a camera on a tripod and had been recording people as they went in and out. Didn’t get to ask what was happening because he and they were gone when I got back out. Had my kids with me though so it made me nervous when I saw it. Anyone have any info on what was going on?

  31. - Fixer - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 6:01 pm:

    Under an hour. Almost there.

  32. - NoUseForAName - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 6:02 pm:

    Sorry, 34th, not 35th.
