Blizzard slams northern Illinois

Monday, Nov 26, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Tribune

Blizzard warnings were canceled in the Chicago area Monday morning after one of the largest November storms on record dumped as much as 13 inches of snow, jamming the morning commute, canceling more than 460 flights at the city’s airports, shutting hundreds of schools and knocking power out to more than 300,000 homes and businesses.

As of 7 a.m., 7.4 inches of snow was recorded at O’Hare International Airport, the city’s official measuring station. Crystal Lake got 7.6 inches and some areas of McHenry County got 13.1 inches, according to the National Weather Service. Lindenhurst got 9 inches and Downers Grove 4.1 inches.

The north suburbs and southern Wisconsin bore the brunt of the storm. A winter storm warning remains in effect after blizzard warnings issued Sunday night expired early Monday morning.

Chicagoland commute times are here.

* We only had a light dusting of snow in Springfield and the Peoria area was expecting 3 to 6 inches, but the Rockford area was hit pretty hard

As much as a foot of snow is expected to have blanketed much of Winnebago County by early Monday. […]

By 6 p.m., 7 inches of snow had fallen in Rockford, said National Weather Service meteorologist Ricky Castro. “There’s a heavy snow band from Central Illinois to Winnebago County, and it’s just sitting there. You guys could get up to a foot before it moves to the east.

The Quad Cities area was slammed by more than 13 inches of the white stuff.

How’s it looking by you?

It wasn’t as bad as I feared. The main roads were in pretty good shape. We’ve been through worse, but in places it’s bad. Hoping everyone has a safe one and be careful out there, walking shoveling and driving.

  2. - Huh? - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 8:42 am:

Took a snow day off work. LaSalle County, south of I80, got about 2 inches snow. Majority of precipitation fell as rain. Didn’t start snowing until about 10 PM last night.

  3. - 47th Ward - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 8:45 am:

We got a lot of rain up here by me last night and the snow fell on top. It’s heart attack snow for sure, nice and heavy. Take it easy out there people.

  4. - The Real Captain - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 8:48 am:

Less than an inch in Bloomington/Normal but we have some ice underneath and these cities aren’t great at road clearing.

  5. - DuPage Dave - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 8:50 am:

About 7 inches of very heavy snow in north DuPage. Our village does a good job keeping the streets clear. It’s still snowing a bit but expected to stop by noon.

  6. - Cindy Lou - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 8:52 am:

More the winds with drifting snow out here in the boonies NW of Peoria.

Lost electricity (which means my heat) for about ten hours.

  7. - wordslinger - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 8:53 am:

    Take it easy out there.

The Vikings called this Big Gripper snow. Send you to Valhalla in a hurry if you’re not careful.

It’s as close as you can get to shoveling water in solid form.

Clear the walk for an old-timer on your block without saying anything. Good for the soul.

  8. - Wensicia - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 9:00 am:

Waukegan: schools closed, no power, 10 inches of snow on top of slushy ice.

  9. - West Sider - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 9:06 am:

It was a “widow-maker”. 7″ the first three of which have the consistency of a Slurpee.

  10. - OneMan - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 9:06 am:

About 7 or 8 inches of heavy wet snow, the type of snow that would guarantee my wife was working her shifts in the ICU.

Plows came and did a nice job putting ice boulders in front of the driveway that I had to use the old coal.

Will give the Oswego 308 district props for making the call last night to cancel school, trying to transport a bunch of kids on rural roads in these conditions would have stunk.

Also, the weather took out our comcast so no on-line gaming for OneSon on his bonus vacation day.

  11. - OneMan - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 9:24 am:

had to use the old coal shovel to move…
(Think the shovel is at least 80 years old)

  12. - Austinman - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 9:26 am:

It wasn’t that bad in the west loop, but looks like the northern part of the area got alot of snow

  13. - Driving a car - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 9:41 am:

It’s looking like I’m glad I can work from home today, lol

  14. - zatoichi - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 9:45 am:

Morgan/Cass County schools closed and roads are icy.

  15. - Nearly Normal - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 9:54 am:

Bloomington dist 87 had school but Unit 5 (Normal and rural area) did not. Roads are slick as there is ice under that layer of snow. Main streets in town are plowed and salted. Tho Towanda without power this am. Other rural districts north of BloNo did not have school whereas those south and east started later.

  16. - Excessively Rabid - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 9:55 am:

Just thinking about a casual conversation with a stranger at the bus stop one morning back in the Bilandic days:
“So how much did it snow last night?”
    “Only 8 inches.”
    “Oh.”

  17. - Cold of Winter - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 9:59 am:

Let’s not forget the name of this storm that did so much damage to the state in such short time, aptly named Bruce.

  18. - yinn - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 10:16 am:

DeKalb: We got just about a foot, with white-out and slick conditions (snow on top of rain) if you try to leave town. All schools closed, including NIU, and county offices closed. A lot of 10 a.m. openings (e.g., city hall, banks).

==had to use the old coal shovel==

My dad always used an old coal shovel. He worked in a steel mill and refused to buy aluminum snow shovels and plastic garbage cans.

  19. - very old soil - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 10:36 am:

No snow at my house in western Stephenson County but four miles to the south local school is closed.

  20. - Huh? - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 10:44 am:

    “old coal shovel”

Farm and fleet sells them under the moniker of “grain scoop”.

  21. - JoanP - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 10:46 am:

South side of Chicago: we had a lot of rain yesterday, and strong winds. It changed to snow sometime in the night, and more light, fluffy stuff came down this morning, until about 9:00. There was some accumulation, but I’d say only about an inch.

  22. - flea - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 11:05 am:

cattle have their heads buried deep into the round bales..very telling about weather system..and it’s going to be a long, cold winter

  23. - Anonymous - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 12:09 pm:

Shoveled 4 inches off my Palos Hills driveway this morning. In a path just wide enough to get my car out Wednesday. That is when I head for my Florida home for the winter.

  24. - Amalia - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 12:12 pm:

Southside not too bad. North and northwest burbs pals getting slammed.

  25. - Highland Il - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 12:37 pm:

Highland had a dusting, but the wind last night was howling. Actually had pumpkins being rolled down the streets by the wind.

  26. - Anonymous - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 12:59 pm:

Here in New Mexico, it snows in the mountains where it belongs.

  27. - Bourbon Street - Monday, Nov 26, 18 @ 3:28 pm:

Down here in Florida….well, you really don’t want to know.
