* Things can be different in the Metro East…
Madison County Associate Judge Clarence Harrison declined to order the City of Wood River to remove “vote Yes” signs positioned on city-owned property and inside City Hall that promote a sales tax increase referendum on the ballot in Tuesday’s election.
At a hearing challenging the city on Monday morning, Harrison indicated that if opponents of the signs want a remedy they can vote the public officials responsible out of office, according to a courtroom observer.
The controversy involves what critics say is a violation of the city’s own ordinance regarding political signs on city property, as well as the city’s position not to allow “vote No” signs on city property.
Last week, a spokesperson for the Illinois State Board of Elections said that if the city paid for the signs and/or used workers to place them on city property would be considered election interference.
* I’m not planning to do any coverage tonight so you can also use this post to discuss results.

Sometimes Metro East seems like another dimension.
- A guy - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 4:39 pm:
In other towns the people working in city hall have this burden all to themselves, needing to tell people to raise taxes without any signs or support material. /s
- Ahgry Chicagoan - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 4:52 pm:
Just voted in my precinct in Bridgeport’s 11th ward. Deserted except for judges. Lightfoot signs on the approach (at an appropriate distance) but no sign of Preckwinkle activity.
- Truthiness - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 4:54 pm:
Just dropped of my VBM in Sangamon. 473 votes today

KC Hall in Ottawa had a steady flow at 5pm. Several precincts are co-located at same place.
Just a few minutes wait.

Election interference is a misdemeanor. The State’s Attorney could prosecute it.
- Grand Avenue - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 5:48 pm:
It’s funny - in the February election every one was on Twitter urging every one to go out and vote. Today, there is none of that exhorting. I think people just want this to be over.
- Anonymous - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 5:55 pm:
Up to 27% turnout in Chicago now.
- Wensicia - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 5:55 pm:
It seems voter turnout will be lower than any previous Chicago mayoral election.
- Fav human - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 5:57 pm:
Speaking of Feb, any hope they will move the primary back to March?
- Justin - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 6:50 pm:
I was the 45th voter in my precinct near Granite City today. The school board races are the main draw this time around.
- Anonymous - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 7:15 pm:
The February election wasn’t a primary.
- Anonymous - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 7:38 pm:
AP has 51% of Chicago’s vote in with Lightfoot up by a margin of 125,000 votes. I think we will get a call soon.
- Wensicia - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 7:38 pm:
Lightfoot wins.
- Streator Curmudgeon - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 7:40 pm:
I’d say if somebody wanted to contest the results of the Wood River referendum in court, they’d have grounds for overturning it (if it passes).
Amazing how government officials think they’re above the law.
- Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 7:46 pm:
A massive tail-kicking by Lightfoot.
- wordslinger - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 7:47 pm:
Shaping up to be a Lightfoot landslide.
- Cheryl44 - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 7:50 pm:
Preckwinkle hasn’t shown up at her own party yet.

Ameya Pawar taking a beating in the Chicago Treasurer’s race. Good riddance.
- Ron Burgundy - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 8:00 pm:
This is a humiliation of Preckwinkle. Hope she enjoys her last term at the County because it’s over for her.
- Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 8:05 pm:
Glad Conyears-Ervin won, Rodriguez is winning in the 33rd Ward against Mell and Ald. O’Connor is losing in the 40th. I’m 2 out of 3 tonight.
- Anon - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 8:09 pm:
This was a long time coming for Toni and well deserved.
There is justice in the world after all.
- Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 8:42 pm:
Per the map on TV, Lightfoot is winning or won every single ward. Wowza.
- Fav human - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 8:45 pm:
The trib shows TP at 26%. Unbelievable.
- Cheryl44 - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 8:55 pm:
Ms Preckwinkle is being gracious in defeat. Good for her.
- Ducky LaMoore - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 9:02 pm:
Lightfoot, heavy hand. I’m not a Chicago resident, but man it feels good when people you want to win actually do. The last 14 years or so before November were a real downer.
- Michelle Flaherty - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 9:14 pm:
I didn’t realize Preckwinkle was a 16 seed.
- Original Rambler - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 9:23 pm:
Deb Mell came from behind last election. It was remarkably difficult to get voters to go and vote.
- wordslinger - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 9:31 pm:
–Amanda Vinicky on Chicago Tonight: “Is this a machine loss?” –
This just in: “The Machine” hasn’t existed since at least 1983.
- Anonymous - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 9:57 pm:
Looks like Mell is taking the lead now.

Looks like Mell is taking the lead now.

With 97% of precincts in, Lightfoot has increased her vote from February by 265,556, or 270%.
Preckwinkle, by 40,902, or 46%.
Preckwinkle is going to get beat by 45 points.
So who wants to take credit for that? The “Machine,” CTU, SEIU…..
- Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 10:37 pm:
Lightfoot’s positions are liberal enough for me, so I voted for her. Now she gets her turn. If she is bad, then next…
- ChiTownPal - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 10:38 pm:
Rough estimate here, but TP spent about $212 per vote. I bet some folks would like their dues back.
- Stuntman Bob's Brother - Tuesday, Apr 2, 19 @ 11:07 pm:
Mayor Lightfoot, good for you. But I don’t envy the tasks you’re facing. From “No Country for Old Men”:
“All the time you spend tryin to get back what’s been took from you there’s more goin out the door. After a while you just try and get a tourniquet on it.”
I imagine that’s going to be part of governing much of Chicago for quite some time.
- Shemp - Wednesday, Apr 3, 19 @ 2:18 am:
Having worked some referendums, I would have assumed the City expending dollar one to print the signs, let alone place them, would have violated the spirit of the law. It’s insulting to those places that work to abide by the spirit of the law.
- Seats - Wednesday, Apr 3, 19 @ 7:34 am:
I see a race ended with a tie and no expected mail in votes. The two are set to flip a coin in 2 weeks to determine the winner, but one of the two said that they are conceding because they never intended to win.
Odd, at this point though, wouldn’t you have to go through with the coin flip?
