Ives appears to be gearing up for Casten challenge

Tuesday, May 14, 2019 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Lynn Sweet

Someone is paying for a poll to test how former state Sen. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, would do against freshman Rep. Sean Casten, D-Ill., who represents the swing suburban sixth congressional district.

Ives, a conservative, almost defeated former Gov. Bruce Rauner and Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti in the March, 2018 GOP primary, with Rauner struggling to attract Republicans while also keeping a distance from President Donald Trump.

In April, Sanguinetti announced a March, 2020 GOP primary bid in the sixth. […]

Ives was asked, “Are you interested or thinking about running for Congress in the 6th district?” and she replied, “We’ve you know, this for me it’s always been a team decision. I don’t do anything without my team supporting it and we’ve not made a decision on any race at all.”

Asked about the origins of the survey, she said, “You know, I don’t control that,” adding that she was one of the people getting a call from the polling firm.

An Ives run has long been expected by several folks in the area.

* Somebody tweeted at me about the poll the other day…

* DCCC…

“Whether it’s Evelyn Sanguinetti or Jeanne Ives, it’s clear that Republicans will be running a rubber stamp in the 6th District for President Trump’s disastrous agenda of higher health care costs and higher taxes,” said DCCC spokesperson Mike Gwin. “Illinoisans want someone like Sean Casten who will stand up to President Trump when he hurts Illinois and threatens our values – not someone like Sanguinetti or Ives who will back him every step of the way.”

President Trump lost the 6th CD by 7 points in 2016. This is a formerly reliable GOP bastion, but it’s now a swing district for the near-term at least. Casten won by 7 points last year and Gov. Bruce Rauner won by 5. Rauner won by 33 points four years earlier. Obama lost it by 8 in 2012.

    God help us

  2. - Hamlet's Ghost - Tuesday, May 14, 19 @ 9:27 am:

Unless Evelyn Sanguinetti voluntarily steps aside, shouldn’t the headline be:

“Jeanne Ives to challenge Evelyn Sanguinetti in GOP primary”

A primary battle between Evelyn Sanguinetti and Jeanne Ives is at least as interesting than Ives v Casten given that Trump was -7 in IL06 while Rauner was +5.

  3. - Grandson of Man - Tuesday, May 14, 19 @ 9:31 am:

Please run, Ives, and join Sanguinetti. Republicans got trounced in 2018 in large part because of Trump and Rauner. Fate appears to be very kind to suburban Democrats.

  4. - Nathan - Tuesday, May 14, 19 @ 9:39 am:

I got this same push poll the other night. It was exactly as described. Exaggerate Casten’s positions in the worst light and then ask if you still support. I said I still supported, even at the worst exaggerations.

  5. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, May 14, 19 @ 9:43 am:

I’d pay to have an Ives-Sanguinetti primary. That would be awesome.

  6. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Tuesday, May 14, 19 @ 9:44 am:

I hope someone asks Ives about her views on Trump’s tariff increase. A tariff increase is an increase of taxes on Americans. Is she in favor of taxing Americans?

On the other hand Casten is working towards reducing taxes on Americans by eliminating the cap on SALT deductions. Is Ives in favor of higher taxes (Trump) or lower taxes(Casten)?

  7. - Hard D - Tuesday, May 14, 19 @ 9:48 am:

Of course they are exaggerating Castens positions because that’s what Proft does. Or you could substitute exaggerate for the word lying. Because at the end of the day that’s what Proft will do.

  8. - Henry Francis - Tuesday, May 14, 19 @ 9:52 am:

Speaking of paying, 47th, do you think Ives jumping in might help Evelyn get more Rauner bucks?

  9. - wordslinger - Tuesday, May 14, 19 @ 9:58 am:

–Someone is paying for a poll to test how former state Sen. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton,…–

I think we can rule out Rauner money.

Ives is certainly in step with the Trump national GOP brand. I doubt that’s a general election winner in 2020 the way that district is going.

    Roskam was a +34 in that district in 2014 and a +18 in 2016.

I’m detecting a rather precipitous trend.

When was Jeanne Ives in the Illinois Senate?

Ives just can’t walk away. Same with Oberweis. Both would be disasters for the GOP and all but assure the 6th and 14th remain in Democrat hands. Both are great primary candidates but the worst general candidates the GOP could offer. Ugh.

Ives is the total GOP package, with social and fiscal issues. I hope she runs and look forward to her battling it out with the RINO neoliberal camp.

===might help Evelyn get more Rauner bucks?===

Lol, no. I think his wallet is permanently closed.

Nearly 30 years of right-wing punditry have finally driven out the GOP’s moderates, leading to places like this “formerly reliable GOP bastion” becoming swing districts.

Casten did not take a moderate stance on abortion during the election. Remember when he said he viewed abortion as a medical procedure like gall bladder surgery? He is for taxpayer funding of abortion and for repealing the Hyde amendment, and, when pressed on whether he would put limits on abortion, he never said that he would.

  18. - Annonin' - Tuesday, May 14, 19 @ 10:57 am:

Golly could Casten be so lucky to have the Commando and Slip&Sue square off in a primary…Memoriees of GovJunk flii the minds and Casten heads back to DC without breakin’ a threat

==Ives is the total GOP package, with social and fiscal issues. I hope she runs and look forward to her battling it out with the RINO neoliberal camp.==
LOL, she truly is Madigan’s favorite Republican, unelectable.

  21. - DuPage - Tuesday, May 14, 19 @ 11:06 am:

Too bad Roskam went along with the limitation on the SALT deduction. If he had fought it, he might still be in office. The SALT limitation hurt a lot of his (ex)supporters.

  22. - Chicago Cynic - Tuesday, May 14, 19 @ 11:27 am:

Sean should only be so lucky. I mean sure, it would be a toxic campaign. But he’d clean her extremist clock.

“Ives is the total GOP package, with social and fiscal issues. I hope she runs and look forward to her battling it out with the RINO neoliberal camp.”

OMG I love this so. Yes, please run. Please run just like that. Please, Jeanne, run as a Trump-loving, right-wing, anti-gay Republican. That would be awesome. Sean’s fundraiser would love you for it.

  24. - Soccermom - Tuesday, May 14, 19 @ 12:58 pm:

Roskam didn’t “go along” with the SALT cap. He was one of the architects of the tax bill. He earned that loss.

  25. - Suburbanon - Tuesday, May 14, 19 @ 1:37 pm:

Correct Soccermom. I was among many who tried to talk Roskam into dropping that provision. He didn’t budge.

  26. - JS Mill - Tuesday, May 14, 19 @ 1:37 pm:

“Ives, she won’t let you forget that she lost”

  27. - Anon-I-Guess - Tuesday, May 14, 19 @ 2:12 pm:

This race will be happening WHILE Roe is being overturned. Casteen will win by double digits.

  28. - So_Ill - Tuesday, May 14, 19 @ 4:46 pm:

Damn, I wanted Ives to run against Durbin. Un-electable.

  29. - Anonymous - Tuesday, May 14, 19 @ 5:41 pm:

I may stick around to work for Ives instead of moving to Florida to make my vote count.

  30. - Odysseus - Tuesday, May 14, 19 @ 7:22 pm:

    @consmom:
“Remember when he said he viewed abortion as a medical procedure like gall bladder surgery?”

Yes, that is the moderate position.

  31. - A 400lb. Guy on a bed - Tuesday, May 14, 19 @ 9:51 pm:

Another example of how the GOP has gotten “smaller and crazier.”

  32. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Wednesday, May 15, 19 @ 6:13 am:

==This race will be happening WHILE Roe is being overturned.==

I wonder if that will happen. Without Roe vs Wade there is no reason for a poor person to ever vote Republican. And Republicans know this.

  33. - Honeybadger - Wednesday, May 15, 19 @ 8:47 am:

“Without Roe vs Wade there is no reason for a poor person to ever vote Republican. And Republicans know this.”

There is NEVER a reason for a poor person to ever vote Republican, anyway.
