Illinois Policy Institute announces “purge” after leak

Wednesday, May 29, 2019 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Background is here. This post came after a long and acrimonious Twitter exchange between Maxwell and the Illinois Policy Institute…

Looks like the purge didn’t work.

Every time I think IPI can’t humiliate itself any further, they go and prove me wrong

  2. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:25 am:

I wonder how IP decided who to purge?

  3. - Trapped in the 'burbs - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:26 am:

You have to give them credit for consistency.

  4. - ChicagoVinny - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:26 am:

== I wonder how IP decided who to purge? ==

    Thunderdome

  5. - efudd - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:27 am:

Sounds like a dysfunctional family, which is another way of saying family.
Isn’t this outfit fully funded by billionaires?
Further proof that wealth doesn’t equate intelligence.

  6. - Roman - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:28 am:

== no room for ridicule ==

    Snowflakes.

  7. - Linus - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:29 am:

“We do not want content to be cherrypicked and used out of context to attack the Lincoln Lobby.”

From the masters of cherrypicking, context-less attacks.

  8. - Grandson of Man - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:30 am:

“It’s hard out there for Illinois taxpayers.”

What a terribly hard life IPI members have had in Illinois, being from underprivileged areas and having no built-in advantages. And that oppressive state income tax that has been lower than most neighbors for decades. Then there’s the utter lack of opportunity in Chicago metro.

  9. - wordslinger - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:30 am:

Does a “purge” mean no juice box and snack before naptime?

My, such thin skins, they have. Those independent, non-partisan think-tankers can dish it out, but take it, not so much.

  10. - ChicagoVinny - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:33 am:

Their reply to this tweet is even more thin-skinned

  11. - JoanP - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:34 am:

“Purge”? What is this, Stalinist Russia?

  12. - Scamp640 - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:36 am:

IPI Purge = circular firing squad

  13. - Anotheretiree - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:36 am:

“Purge of the IPI”.. Fourth in the Purge movie series. Opening Friday, check your listings.

  14. - Jocko - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:37 am:

Something tells me they fail to see the irony in calling themselves the “Lincoln Lobby”…with Lincoln’s cabinet comprised of rivals from the 1860 convention

  15. - Lester Holt’s Mustache - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:38 am:

Thoughts and prayers to Lucky, I hope he survived the purge

  16. - efudd - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:39 am:

    JoanP-
Exactly. Typical right-wing dialog. Everything so dire, everything a “war for the soul of our country”. Basically all of these outfits took a page from the NRA. Granted it worked for the NRA for decades, now, not so much.

  17. - Anon E Moose - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:40 am:

I like the irony of them using Facebook for privacy.

  18. - Amber Ale - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:41 am:

That far off scream is Goldberg as he gets the Google alert for “IPI” and “purge”

  19. - efudd - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:42 am:

Generally, anytime an outfit has to publicly announce they have had to clean house, it’s too late. It simply speaks to years of mismanagement.

  20. - Elliott Ness - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:44 am:

Most folks self-purged IPI long ago..

  21. - Wensicia - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:45 am:

I guess they chose the wrong members to purge.

  22. - Earnest - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:45 am:

So, after the purge, are they replenishing with the BTIA(TM)?

  23. - George - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:47 am:

Apparently, the Illinois Sheriff’s Association is using the same playbook. I left respectful comments about the legalization of cannabis. They were pro-legalization comments, however, they were polite comments.

  24. - lakeside - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:47 am:

*Now* let back in all the people you purged and purge everyone else. Problem solved.

=Thoughts and prayers to Lucky, I hope he survived the purge=

All star moment there LHM, seriously hysterical. Bravo sir (banned punctuation)

Why does the far right continue to use old commie central committee tactics like a “purge”?

Pretty soon nobody will show up at their meetings for fear of being purged.

  28. - @misterjayem - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:57 am:

As Groucho famously said, “I don’t care to belong to any club that will fail to purge me.”

    – MrJM

  29. - Ron Burgundy - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 9:59 am:

The leaked content put them in a bad light on its own. It didn’t need the media’s help.

  30. - Gooner - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 10:09 am:

Hey Illinois Policy, if you put it in writing, expect that someome is going to leak it.

Heck, if you say it, expect that someone will leak it.

Hence, if you have ideas or plans that others may view as strange or offensive, don’t write them down and don’t tell anyone.

And so ends today’s advice to the best team that a bunch of rich conservatives can put together.

  31. - We'll See - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 10:22 am:

IPI is good at filling the bag with dog doo and placing it on the doorstep, lighting it, ringing the bell and then running around to the back door to catch the front doorbell.

  32. - wordslinger - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 10:28 am:

–..old commie central committee tactics like a “purge”?–

Reality to IPI: “Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time”

  35. - Henry Francis - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 10:34 am:

You guys are all such a bunch of meanies. No wonder they want their own state.

  36. - wordslinger - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 10:54 am:

–Where is Radical Candor when you need him?–

They’re back. The flaming dumpster is the signature.

  37. - Juvenal - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 10:56 am:

If Tillman would purge the senior staff at IPI and replace them with former Rauner staffers, we will have come full circle.

    Because purges work so well.

  38. - Juvenal - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 10:59 am:

I love that the location for @IPITruthSquad is Skillicorn’s Office.

  39. - Bigtwich - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 11:18 am:

“Oh, we’re meetin’ at the courthouse at eight o’clock tonight
You just walk in the door and take the first turn to the right
Be careful when you get there, we hate to be bereft
But we’re taking down the names of everybody turning left”

Chad Mitchell Trio, The John Birch Society

  40. - VerySmallRocks - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 11:37 am:

And what, do we do with leakers?

PURGE THEM! PURGE THEM! PURGE THEM!!!

(I wonder if they did the float test of suspected leakers before purging them?)

  41. - twowaystreet - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 11:44 am:

I’m confused… to protect your members or your staff? It was a staffer comments that got leaked and humiliated. They should update their update to reflect that…

  42. - Louis G Atsaves - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 11:46 am:

The arsonists of the GOP are upset? They are cleaning house to prevent any more arson? When they are finished, arsonists only remain?

That one is crazier than the circular firing squad tactics.

  43. - Boone's is Back - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 11:59 am:

“This is your emergency broadcast system announcing the commencement of the first IPI Purge. At the siren, all crime, including petty name calling, loud mouth breathing, and harassment, will be legal for 12 hours. All emergency services will be suspended. The IPI thanks you for your participation.”

  44. - A.Citizen - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 12:05 pm:

IPI: “We want our members to feel empowered, which means there’s no room for ridicule…”

Translation: We’ll have no transparency here. If you don’t like it, go - - - - yourself. And if you don’t want to do that, we’ll do it for you.”

  45. - G'Kar - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 12:18 pm:

Pretty soon people will start to mysteriously disappear from the original group photo of the Lincoln Lobby.

  46. - RIJ - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 12:31 pm:

Oh, dear. Ya’ll are so mean by taunting IPI! They’ll sputter and pout and whine, but as my mother would tell us kids, don’t dish it out if you can’t take it.

  47. - ArchPundit - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 12:57 pm:

John Tillman talking to himself on a Facebook page funded by the Kochs seems like a natural and preferred outcome for him.

  48. - ArchPundit - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 12:58 pm:

===They’ll sputter and pout and whine, but as my mother would tell us kids, don’t dish it out if you can’t take it.

Most of all they will cartoon!

  49. - 17% Solution - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 1:08 pm:

== no room for ridicule ==

And then Eric Allie draws Mark Maxwell as a clown.

  50. - Honeybear - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 1:13 pm:

You guys laugh and mock but I have to admit I’m impressed by the inside look at their influence operations. It’s the Koch perfidy factory

  51. - IllinoisBoi - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 1:46 pm:

Leak what? What information does IPI have that’s important enough to leak?

  52. - cdog - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 2:07 pm:

I find it humorous that this group, that lives on a platform in an artificially created world of like-minded ideologues, where comments/commenters are “purged” instantaneously, think IP LL is somehow different.

  53. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 2:16 pm:

==I find it humorous that this group, that lives on a platform in an artificially created world of like-minded ideologues, where comments/commenters are “purged” instantaneously, think IP LL is somehow different.==
It’s different in that you can always make another comment later on Capital Fax that won’t be deleted. That’s not true for Illinois Policy or Lincoln Lobby.

  54. - wordslinger - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 3:22 pm:

–I find it humorous that this group, that lives on a platform in an artificially created world of like-minded ideologues,–

    Yet here you are.

What do the kool kids call that? A self-own?

  55. - JS Mill - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 3:48 pm:

=I find it humorous that this group, that lives on a platform in an artificially created world of like-minded ideologues, where comments/commenters are “purged” instantaneously, think IP LL is somehow different.=

    LOL.

Were you “emotional” when you wrote that?

Nice to see you posting on CapFax though.

  56. - Cards Fan - Wednesday, May 29, 19 @ 8:28 pm:

Lester wins the internet today with “thoughts & prayers to Lucky”
