Question of the day

Friday, Jun 21, 2019 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Amanda Vinicky

Recreational marijuana is all but a done deal in Illinois. Late last month, Illinois became the first state in the nation to approve such a measure via a legislative body, rather than a referendum.

But on Tuesday, Gov. J.B. Pritzker is expected to make it final.

Multiple sources tell WTTW News that the governor, who campaigned on legalizing recreational adult use cannabis, is scheduled to sign that law June 25.

Legal weed is still about six months away, as the law won’t actually take effect until Jan. 1, 2020.

That signing date is confirmed.

* The Question: Your mood next Tuesday?

    At best I am sad for Illinois that we have regressed as a state toward legalizing juvenile behavior.

    At worst I am fearful for the health consequences that otherwise reasonable people are willing to ignore because their particular addiction is being normalized.

    NPR, Washington Post, Harvard Medical School, the Atlantic and a multitude of others have published reports and studies in the last week showing the damaging effect this will have, especially on young people.

    Sorry if this makes me fatally uncool - I just prefer living in a place that doesn’t mock caution and sanity.

  31. - Lurker - Friday, Jun 21, 19 @ 3:26 pm:

    After a failed online search, I must ask (as a non-pot guy) …
    is there significance of 625 or June 25 for pot smokers?

  32. - SpfdNewb - Friday, Jun 21, 19 @ 3:27 pm:

    Unpopular, mocking caution and sanity would be not paying debts when due. How did that work for the previous Governor? Also, I read the Atlantic daily. The last two articles on cannabis within the last week on that site were about an ancient Chinese artifact with ties to cannabis and how medical cannabis will probably not slow down the opioid epidemic. Stop lying, please.

    ===legalizing juvenile behavior===

    Your comments on all the cannabis posts on Capfax are not getting any better. The bill legalizes adults to consume cannabis not toilet paper their rivals house.

    -Q: Do you know if he’s also signing SB2023 on Tuesday?-

    Reading the summary, I have to assume the Gov. will sign it as well. But don’t take my word for it.

    Pretty much unchanged, I have friends who have used for a long time, 2 of my 3 kids do occasionally. I feel better for the riddance of a prohibition that was unevenly enforced.

    No, I’ll probably have two drinks…

    “Vermont, not Illinois, was first (in 2018) state to legalize recreational weed by legislation”

    For possession, not commercial sale. We’ll be pioneers in full legalization by state government.

  52. - Nick Name - Friday, Jun 21, 19 @ 4:56 pm:

    I cannot partake, being allergic to cannabis. But I am happy for this law. Congratulations to everyone.

    My mood shall be: Delighted, to have some personal liberty restored after relocating recently from a Free-State.
