Durbin has $3.8 million vs. all GOP candidates’ $140K

Thursday, Oct 17, 2019 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Bernie’s column includes a story about Republican US Senate hopeful and Springfield surgeon Tom Tarter and also has the money wrapup

The other candidates are former Lake County Sheriff MARK CURRAN; PEGGY HUBBARD of Belleville, who served in the Navy and worked for the IRS; and perennial candidate ROBERT MARSHALL, a radiologist from Burr Ridge.

Federal Election Commission reports show that Tarter, in the three-month period ending Sept. 30, raised more than $32,000 on top of the [$50,000] loan to himself, and had more than $74,000 on hand at the close of the period. Hubbard had raised more than $43,000 and had about $21,000 on hand. Curran loaned himself $10,000, raised a total of nearly $20,000 more, and ended the period with more than $23,000. Marshall, at the end of June, had less than $22,000.

Whoever wins the GOP nomination in March is expecting to face Democrat U.S. Sen. DICK DURBIN, of Springfield, who is seeking another six-year term. From July through September, Durbin raised more than $1 million and ended the period with $3.8 million in his campaign fund.

Curran is supposed to be the frontrunner. That’s what he told us anyway.

In other FEC filing news, Jeanne Ives used over $600 of campaign cash on a makeover for herself.

I’m surprised Durbin doesn’t have more. He’s been senator a long time, no real opponent last 2x

The “Rule of CFE” is in full effect.

ILGOP just needs to put up a sacrificial lamb with no baggage and save money for other races.

  5. - L.A. - Thursday, Oct 17, 19 @ 1:06 pm:

No real opponent this time either. Durbin doesn’t need to raise a lot of money to run against these yahoos. The numbers are pretty funny though

=== ILGOP just needs to put up a sacrificial lamb with no baggage and save money for other races.===

In 2018, Rauner did just that with SoS, Treasurer and Comptroller.

With respect, how did that work out?

@OW I think this time around it would be the better strategy. Does it really matter if Durbin gets 65% of the vote vs 55%? Strategically speaking, that money needs to be spent on Rodney Davis and Jeanne Ives. ILGOP is hurting bad now that the sugar daddies have shuffled off to Milan.

    - Ducky LaMoore -

No worries, you probably know how I feel.

    My take is this;

At some point the ILGOP needs to be relevant, or admit they are irrelevant.

Continuing to “sacrifice here” or “give there”… at what point do they decide they themselves matter?

    In 2022, new map too.

    Will they beat Durbin? Doubtful.

Doubtful, but when are they gonna try?

  9. - Ducky LaMoore - Thursday, Oct 17, 19 @ 1:40 pm:

    @OW

I highly doubt Durbin runs again. And I don’t think they ever beat him. Just like they would never beat Jesse White, though to a lesser extent. They know they’re irrelevant, but they don’t need to admit it to the world. They need to put what resources they have into protecting what they’ve got, and pouncing on the most-likely to win races. Otherwise, they will never dig themselves out.

DD will win, only because it is such a Blue state. It won’t be because of his track record and accomplishments.

I always chuckle when he gets blasted in his home county every election. People here know.

  11. - MyTwoCents - Thursday, Oct 17, 19 @ 5:33 pm:

Pick a Name, I wouldn’t rely on that reason for why Sangamon County doesn’t vote for Durbin. More to do with the (D) behind his name than anything else. This is a county where Rauner beat Pritzker, even after 4 years of decimating State government and by default harming the economy of the county.

  12. - Excitable Boy - Thursday, Oct 17, 19 @ 7:40 pm:

    - People here know -

Yeah, they also went for Rauner. Geniuses.

  14. - Pick a Name - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 7:06 am:

Doesn’t take long for people to switch to Trump or Rauner when the topic is Durbin and GOP candidates. Sheesh.

  15. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 7:12 am:

=== Rauner when the topic is Durbin and GOP candidates.===

    (Sigh)

Rauner bought the ILGOP brand in 2015 thru 2018, including in context of candidate recruiting.

    Keep up, please.

  16. - Pick a Name - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 9:02 am:

And the topic is still DD and the any GOPers running for Senate.

I’m keeping pace just fine, thanks.

  17. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 9:07 am:

    Who can the GOP recruit?

The last time the Rauner GOP had to recruit statewide candidates… they came up with one, and three patsies.

The GOP now a year removed and the decimation left by Rauner continues to have serious recruitment issues, partnered with a lack of funds to compete.

I know, you like things… simple, lol

  18. - Pick a Name - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 11:01 am:

Again, I’ll go back to this is a deep blue state. DD will win, not because of accomplishments, but because of too many left leaning residents.

In a purple or red state, DD would be golfing full time in Boca Raton.

  19. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 11:04 am:

=== I’ll go back to this is a deep blue state==

… and yet, in 2014, there were 3 GOP statewide officers and a GOP US Senator, but please go on, LOL

  20. - Pick a Name - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 12:50 pm:

A lot has changed in this state and in this nation in 5 years, but you knew that.

I mean, the Cubs were only dreaming of winning a WS in 2014.

=== A lot has changed in this state and in this nation in 5 years, but you knew that.===

    Bruce Rauner, then Donald Trump.

    You’re welcome.
