  1. - RIJ - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 2:36 pm:

Time to start rethinking press conferences in this age of disappearing publications, reporter layoffs, and online living.

  2. - Juvenal - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 2:37 pm:

Whose job is it to schedule press events for the governor?

Whose job is it to turn press out for those events?

Chicago has always had a Mayor.

  3. - @misterjayem - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 2:37 pm:

    “Thank you all for coming.”

    – MrJM

  4. - Bruce (no not him) - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 2:38 pm:

Sorry Tina, somebody else has to get a chance. I can’t let you ask every question.

  5. - Nick Name - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 2:38 pm:

“Since it’s just you and me, why don’t you get up here and I’ll ask you questions for a change?”

  6. - Reality Check - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 2:39 pm:

If there are cameras (just not reporters) out of this shot, then he’s probably perfectly content.

  7. - OneMan - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 2:39 pm:

Some questioned the need for a 3 meter press exclusion zone

  8. - Huh? - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 2:41 pm:

The press pool is getting pretty shallow these days. Is all of the other media that missed the press conference going to asked Tina for a copy of her story?

  9. - Huh? - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 2:42 pm:

If a politician holds a press conference and the media doesn’t show up, it is really occur?

  10. - pool boy - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 2:44 pm:

Before I answer that question, can someone open the door and let the other reporters in?

  11. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 2:45 pm:

“Tina, I’m just gonna read this, and pretend and such, bare with me… “

  12. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 2:48 pm:

“Welp, Tina, you wanted an exclusive… “

  13. - @misterjayem - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 2:49 pm:

On a more serious note: This is an example of why I get really annoyed when commenters scornfully dismiss the Sun-Times.

No, it’s not as big as the Trib — but sometimes it’s not the size of the dog in the fight that counts, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.

And the S-T is still a scrappy old dog.

The reporters at both Chicago dailies are doing critically important work, and if either is further diminished — or God forbid, goes away — the entire state will be in dire trouble.

    – MrJM

  14. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 2:49 pm:

“I do like you, Tina, you do great work, but if I knew it was gonna be us two, I woulda saved us both the trip, but… here we are…. ok… “

  15. - Perrid - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 2:49 pm:

“Tina, I’ve already called on you. Let someone else have a chance.”

  16. - Perrid - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 2:50 pm:

“I Stand Alone” by Godsmack playing in the background.

  17. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 2:51 pm:

Governor Pritzker’s security detail takes the proper distance thing seriously ALL the time. For example…

  18. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 2:52 pm:

“Tina, can you hear me from there? Oh, good.”

  19. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 2:53 pm:

    “Tina… can you stand… no… further back… lil further… about 5-6 more feet… we’re gonna CGI a crowd or something, you understand…”

  20. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 2:55 pm:

“I guess my advance and press folks are trying to show me what it means to get ‘earned media’ with this turnout but… “

  21. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 2:57 pm:

“Tina, to be honest, I dunno if my crew thinks your time isn’t valuable or my time isn’t valuable but let’s not waste anymore of yours… ok?”

  22. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 2:58 pm:

“We should probably start, waiting 45 minutes for more folks to show up was a waste, so… “

  23. - Nick Name - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 2:59 pm:

“Yes, sir, there really are other reporters here. I just didn’t wear my cloak of invisibility.”

  24. - Gladhander - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 3:01 pm:

== we’re gonna CGI a crowd or something, you understand ==
Oswego Willy, will the CGI crowd consist of several dozen CGI Tinas? Or will all the other statehouse reporters get their digital replicas in there?

  25. - One hand //ing - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 3:01 pm:

“Governor governs capably” isn’t much of a headline. If JB wants column inches he’s going to have to veto a budget.

  26. - Michelle Flaherty - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 3:02 pm:

These should be billed as “exclusive” interviews and the “Sun-Times learned in an exclusive interview” and “Gov. Pritzker told the Sun-Times in an exclusive interview”

  27. - don the legend - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 3:03 pm:

“Is there any way I can Blame Madigan for the poor turnout?

  28. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 3:04 pm:

    - Gladhander -

I did ask that same question, I was told it’s gonna be a real treat once they send it to Blue Room Stream, couple Easter eggs, maybe even a Marvel hero… me, I can’t wait to see the end product.

  29. - Thomas Paine - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 3:06 pm:

Record Turnout for “Men Watching Construction Projects” Holiday Bash

  30. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 3:07 pm:

“Tina, we paid for the use of this podium and sound system so… “

  31. - BC - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 3:08 pm:

    Three things at play here:
    1. the media is drawn to conflict and there’s just not a lot of conflict in state politics right now.
    2. the closing of media outlets and thinning of the press corps. 3. A basic rule-of-thumb that the Chicago media just cares a heck of a lot more about what’s happening in City Hall than they do about what happens in Springfield. True now and it has been that way for probably a century or more.

  32. - Nearly Normal - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 3:15 pm:

Tina, you can ask only two questions this time. I am waiting for the other reporters.

    Bueller…Bueller…Anyone?

  33. - Michelle Flaherty - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 3:27 pm:

    Focus Tina, focus.

  34. - Quizzical - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 3:30 pm:

Since only one of you objects, I will now do something I like to call “Jazz Odyssey”.

  35. - A Guy - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 3:34 pm:

We’re going to change the name of these events. From now on, these will be referred to as “A Conference”

  36. - A Guy - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 3:36 pm:

At least I don’t have to elbow my friend Monique anymore.

  37. - A Guy - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 3:37 pm:

I’m sorry sir, I cannot use a quote saying “A confidential source close to the Governor. It’s just the two of us here and my intern taking a camera shot.”

  38. - A Guy - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 3:38 pm:

Gov: We’re holding a press conference.
    Tina: What time?
Gov: What time is good for you?

  39. - A Guy - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 3:39 pm:

“How many chair do we need?”

  40. - R A T - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 3:50 pm:

Tina, please, come back over here with the other 100 reporters. Why do you always do that?

  41. - R A T - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 3:53 pm:

Yes, Tina, this seat is for you. No need having the reporters stand.

  42. - West Sider - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 4:01 pm:

Ok- The Governor will take questions now: Please raise your hand, so he can call on you in order…..

  43. - West Sider - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 4:02 pm:

Louder- for those in the back

  44. - rabid - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 4:16 pm:

Welcome to my new man cave

  45. - Say What? - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 4:16 pm:

I could have bough the newspaper and employed a few people for less. They said being Governor would be fun . . . . .

  46. - booshwa - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 4:30 pm:

I saw him at the cook county democratic event. No one paid attention to his speech. So much cross talk that he probably couldn’t hear himself talk. Poor guy gets no respect.

  47. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 4:32 pm:

Tina might as well be embedded if she’s the only one rolling out to these things. A real coup for the Sun-Times

  48. - Huh? - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 4:40 pm:

When there only 1 reporter, it isn’t a press conference, it is an interview.

  49. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 4:41 pm:

“Bloomberg doesn’t have these attendance problems, he has a whole network… “

  50. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 4:43 pm:

“Guess everyone is binging ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ and couldn’t make it today, so… “

  51. - May Soon Be Required - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 4:50 pm:

    Bueller…Bueller…Bueller…Anyone

  52. - @misterjayem - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 5:10 pm:

Tina: “Stupid Waze — this isn’t a Panera.”

    – MrJM

  53. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 5:23 pm:

“Reporter Alone At Presser part 65”

  54. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 5:24 pm:

“I’m going to read this, and take no questions… “

  55. - Wylie Coyote - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 5:31 pm:

A lot of JB’s news conferences are inconsequential babble for mundane issues that always seem to end up on Page 6 below the fold. He’s never going to win the popularity poll in the city where the Mayor is king. Might as well take his dog and pony show to the downstate media markets where he seldom seems to visit.

  56. - dbk - Tuesday, Dec 10, 19 @ 6:34 pm:

Let’s call these conversations “Tina and JB” …

  57. - Rabid - Wednesday, Dec 11, 19 @ 6:31 am:

I declare Friday the thirteen, lucky day

  58. - CookR - Wednesday, Dec 11, 19 @ 6:58 am:

==== just not a lot of conflict in state politics right now ====

Right! I mean except for the indictments and federal investigation seemingly of the Speaker.

  59. - A Guy - Wednesday, Dec 11, 19 @ 9:26 am:

==seem to end up on Page 6 below the fold==

WC, the Sun Times doesn’t have a fold.
