Tuesday, Jan 14, 2020 - Posted by Rich Miller * I’ve been trying to pull together some longish posts on a few topics and finally looked at the time. Oops. So, talk amongst yourselves, but be nice to each other and keep the conversation Illinois-centric. Thanks.

Watching Coach O and LSU made me sad that Illinois has no state identity. There could never be an Illinois Coach O.

What is going on in Piatt County? Board chairman arrested???

Pretty good marijuana sales for the first 12 days of legalization, it seems: $19.7 million. When more dispensaries open, boy will the money roll in. There will be so much money made, lots of money, maybe more money than anybody’s ever seen. Believe me.

To add to GoM, 14 days in and the sky hasn’t fallen with regard to marijuana legalization. You know things are going okay if the Trib’s biggest complaint is reduced supply.

If Madigan is forced out, who takes his place?

I hope a woman of color. If Illinois changes, might as well go “all in”.

@just Me 2– Mikey Zalewski would be my choice. Tackles tough issues… but I’m sure downstate Reps would not like another Chicago Speaker?

So I can’t talk about Harry and Meghan? Darn. Okay maybe I can spin it like the Tribune: “Northwestern grad and husband leaving British royal family.”

I just read a mailer sent to me by Rush Darwin. I am very impressed how much of a humanitarian he is. Wow just wow. He is the greatest.

Okay Illinois budget experts, it is worth looking at what AZ has achieved. From $1 billion in debt to a $1 billion surplus. Even with this surplus they are proposing a 3.5% income tax surcharge on incomes of singles over $250,000 and couples over $500,000 a year. They also tax all income. They do have a booming economy but a lot of low wage jobs. But there has to be some ideas here that we can use.

DuQuoin just landed a hemp processing plant.
Thinking this industry will reap benefits for years to come.

A wind/weather screen in Galena to keep the cold winter weather from the Northwest out of Illinois?

19.7 mil tax receipts in 2 weeks is over 500 mil in a year. Not far off the estimates, and badly needed. Time will tell, though.

That would be sales revenue, and that’s only with the limited amount of dispensaries at this point. Many more dispensaries are coming.
Mayor Lightfoot said she has the votes for on-site consumption licenses in Chicago (taken up in committee today?). The aldermanic Black Caucus has issues with on-site consumption places, that they would be trouble magnets.
Being a tourist with no place to smoke is a drag (for those who want to smoke and not eat/drink), skulking around in hotel parking lots and other places, and with hotels being non-smoking. There should be legal establishments where tourists and others can smoke, and there will be, as the law allows it in dispensaries and smoke shops. It would be wonderful to serve coffee in those joints, like in Amsterdam.

It’s 2 months out and it already looks like Rich is gonna have his hands full moderating the Rush Darwish Appreciation Society here. For our new visitors, mindless rah rah cheerleading doesn’t sit well here for any candidate. Good luck to the guy, but I think at best he gets enough votes to play spoiler for Lipinski.

Re: Progressive income tax. I would be more inclined to support it if someone — anyone — can explain to me what the money would be used for. All I’ve heard so far is that the rich aren’t paying their fair share.
- Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Jan 14, 20 @ 12:23 pm:
The Chicago on-site marijuana consumption vote is being delayed indefinitely, after pushback from downtown City Council members and the Black Caucus. Because so many local governments voted yes for recreational marijuana sales, maybe some of them will vote in favor of on-site consumption. There should be consideration also for tourists, as that stands to be a big part of the legalization picture.

Info on Piatt County Board Chairman indictment–
https://www.wcia.com/news/local-news/county-board-chair-indicted-by-grand-jury/
Moral of the incident– don’t tamper with the county’s states attorney’s email before you send it to the newspaper and don’t hire an outside attorney without approval of the board for $9,000 in fees.

I can’t believe it has been a year since the Inauguration and the Governor’s Inaugural Ball. Hands down, the best party Springfield has ever seen. That party brought so many different people together to just have fun - breathed life back into a city and culture that desperately needed it (banned punctuation).
