McSweeney says he reported “allegations of a potentially serious crime” to law enforcement

Friday, Feb 28, 2020 - Posted by Rich Miller

* From Rep. David McSweeney (R-Barrington Hills)…

I was made aware of allegations of a potentially serious crime involving public official misconduct and immediately reported it to law enforcement authorities. I have been authorized to report that there is an ongoing investigation into the allegations. When the investigation is complete, I will urge for all the documents and reports to be fully released to the public and will answer all questions authorized by law enforcement officials.

I believe that as a result of my involvement in this investigation, misinformation is being intentionally shared regarding my red light camera ban bills. As such, I want to make it clear that I will not be intimidated and will continue to fully cooperate with law enforcement on their important investigation described above. Law enforcement has also been made aware of these concerns.

On a separate note, my HB 322 (bans red light camera for non- home rule units of government) has passed the House and will be sent to the Senate. Yesterday as promised, I officially asked for HB 323 (bans ALL IL red light cameras) to be released from the Rules Committee.

We must end corruption in both parties in IL!

Rep. McSweeney said the potential crime did not involve red-light cameras, but did clarify that “One of the people who has knowledge of my interactions with law enforcement” is involved with spreading the above-mentioned misinformation about his bill.

He said he wasn’t authorized to tell me if this public official was a legislator or which law enforcement agency he notified.

Not authorized? Did a court put him under a gag order?

  2. - Latina - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 9:49 am:

Thank you David McSweeney. I am happy that you are a man of integrity. Because as I have always said going along makes you just as guilty of the corruption.

  3. - Precinct Captain - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 9:53 am:

If he’s not going to give the goods publicly, then he shouldn’t say something like this, which is nothing more than self-promoting showboating.

  4. - Pundent - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 9:57 am:

I appreciate that McSweeney is willing to say what others won’t even if he can’t.

He’s turned this into a game of Clue. We now must guess what crime has been committed, by whom, and with what weapon.

  5. - Perrid - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 9:58 am:

McSweeney wants attention again, I see. There is no other explanation for teasing a crime without naming names. Either speak or stay silent, this just makes you look like a fool.

  6. - NIU Grad - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 9:59 am:

A part of me is going to miss the entertainment value of McSweeney in the GA…it just won’t be the same if he’s running for a statewide office.

  7. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 10:13 am:

This is a confusing way to go about your business.

So, let’s break this down? Huh?

    McSweeney is a whistle-blower.

McSweeney, who won’t say what he passed on, about whom, about what.

McSweeney, after disclosing to proper authorities, “others” (unnamed) are spreading, what … “misinformation is being intentionally shared“.

McSweeney, who won’t disclose who or the what, “feels”, according to him, this is “them” trying to intimidate him, McSeeeney, to stay silent, and… McSweeney… “will not be intimidated and will continue to fully cooperate with law enforcement on their important investigation described above.”

So to recap… McSweeney blew the whistle, feels he’s being intimidated by misinformation being spread, but will carry on.

This is as silly and ridiculous as the Friday Fiasco trotted out by Dan Rutherford.

How did that work out for Mr. Rutherford?

  8. - 19th Ward Guy - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 10:58 am:

Suspect timeline of his “cooperation” more like a visit from the Feds and he started puking. Explains why he’s not running again.

  9. - Say What? - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 11:02 am:

McSweeney is like the kid in the school play who wants to be up front and center despite the fact that he can’t sing; so Grandma can see that he has an important part.

  10. - Morty - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 11:11 am:

You know who could have really busted this open?
Scott Drury, Former Federal Prosecutor (banned punctuation)

  11. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 11:11 am:

===misinformation is being intentionally shared regarding my red light camera ban bills.===
    Russians in the war room?

  12. - chuddery - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 11:38 am:

If he truly reported corruption to law enforcement, good on him. But he doesn’t need authorization from anyone to share what he reported and to whom he reported it. He shouldn’t have his cake and eat it too.

  13. - Pundent - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 11:44 am:

=But he doesn’t need authorization from anyone to share what he reported and to whom he reported it.=

This seems to be more along the lines of “don’t believe what you’re about to hear about me.”

  14. - NorthSideNoMore - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 11:52 am:

I’m no lawyer but please define “potentially serious” Also he was made aware of allegations so why to him and not to law enforcement ? So he is not the whistle blower? then he is the conduit for the whistles blower which equals hearsay ?

  15. - Flat Bed Ford - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 11:55 am:

=This seems to be more along the lines of “don’t believe what you’re about to hear about me.”=

Could it be that someone is about to share why he has such a cozy relationship with McClain and Mapes? brb, gotta pop some popcorn…

  16. - Lucky Pierre - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 11:59 am:

Funny how the tables are turned and a whistle blower is being attacked instead of lionized

  17. - Sue - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 12:20 pm:

Good he reported but why make the announcement

  18. - Say What? - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 12:21 pm:

Not sure anyone is chastising a whistle blower. The condescending nature of commentary appears to focus on the “look at me, I have something to report” nature of the press pop, and then reporting . . . . . . . . . . well, nothing.

  19. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 12:25 pm:

=== Funny how the tables are turned and a whistle blower is being attacked instead of lionized===

Never has a commenter here looked for victims to make their
… ideology(?)… thoughtful as you do.

McSweeney, as self-described whistle blower, odd for any whistle blower, ever, to “out” themselves before ANY sense of what was reported… wants folks to know that “misinformation” about him is “obvious” because he told some unknowns about some unknown things about unknown people… but McSweeney will continue to do… whatever it is or was McSweeney was doing… without revealing anything or why it’s so damaging that anyone would try to … intimidate… him.

The only comparable thingy to this… is the Friday Fiasco that sunk Dan Rutherford… to this *day* it’s unknown if this was gosh-awful advice or a cooked up scheme by Rutherford himself to implode his career… but… this silly thingy only is comparable to that fiasco.

    How’s that?

==a potentially serious crime involving public official misconduct==

Nice job narrowing it down./s Should we play Charades or Pictionary to determine what happened?

  21. - Flat Bed Ford - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 12:36 pm:

Yikes. I just looked at David’s twitter timeline. A rather unhealthy fixation on one legislator. I believe a “take a breath” break might be in order David.

  22. - Ron Burgundy - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 12:41 pm:

-Funny how the tables are turned and a whistle blower is being attacked instead of lionized.-

Hold that thought. Now flip it back again.

  23. - Louis G Atsaves - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 1:49 pm:

The gang tackling of McSweeney is pretty interesting considering the way he was initially attacked for bellyaching over receiving a ticket for not making a complete stop before turning right on a red-light monitored camera. Some of those attacks were pretty brutal.

Since the worm has turned on red light cameras thanks to corruption issues and also McSweeney, maybe its time a few folks around here ease up and take a breath.

  24. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 1:51 pm:

    === also McSweeney===

For the love of Pete, counselor… you think this lil statement of emptiness is a good look for anyone to roll out?

Reading your lecturing… you must think so. lol

  25. - Not for Nothing - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 2:41 pm:

@Astaves - pretty sure you’re confusing David with Dan Duffy. The grandstanding force was strong with both of them and they served the same area, but they are in fact different humans.

  26. - VerySmallRocks - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 2:51 pm:

    Pundent, which room?

  27. - DuPage - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 3:57 pm:

Some members of “law enforcement” might think of him as censored-censored-censored, because of his bills to abolish red-light cameras. A lot of the revenue ends up as extra money to the municipalities, who use it to increase the police department budget.

  28. - Louis G Atsaves - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 4:11 pm:

@Oswego Willy, do you have any examples of the extreme kindness and sympathy McSweeney was given by the likes of you and a few others back then? No? I didn’t think so.

  29. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 4:17 pm:

=== @Oswego Willy, do you have any examples of the extreme kindness and sympathy McSweeney was given by the likes of you===

    LOL

I nominated McSweeney, not once, but twice for Golden Horseshoes…

If you’d like, we can revisit those nominations.

It’s Friday, why don’t you start the weekend off…

  30. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 4:19 pm:

“If one thing was certain, it was the continued solidarity of the HGOP Caucus and understanding that together they can be more of a force than going out and being a voice not singing off the same page. I respect the idea of Caucus and that stating together is critical in helping the new Governor.

While sticking together is important, it’s also important to be a voice willing to say what at tines can’t be said, and not be “the one” to break too far from the strategy.

    I nominate Rep. Dave McSweeney

At times, McSweeney has been a vocal dissent and tried to be the lone voice in the woods. While airing his thoughts, McSweeney wasn’t breaking the ranks, and for that, I see his work in Springfield as more independent but not off the reservation. It takes a noisy member to give dimension to what is really at stake.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Dec 8, 15 @ 2:37 pm”

You want the other one or is this good?

  31. - Louis G Atsaves - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 4:20 pm:

@Oswego Willy, so you are now being complementary to McSweeney. What changed? Earlier you were sneering about him being a whistleblower.

  32. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 4:21 pm:

    Counselor, that was 2015

    Keep up

  33. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Feb 28, 20 @ 4:23 pm:

=== Earlier you were sneering about…===

Counselor, I was actually mocking how McSweeney pulled a Rutherford.

    Anything else?
