IDPH: 128 new COVID-19 cases - Illinois up to 288

Wednesday, Mar 18, 2020 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Oh, man…

The Illinois Department of Public Health today announced 128 new cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) across Illinois. Two additional counties are now reporting cases; Kendall and Madison counties.

An additional 20 individuals at the long-term care facility in DuPage County experiencing an outbreak have tested positive, bringing the total to 42 (30 residents and 12 staff).

Currently, IDPH is reporting 288 cases in 17 counties in Illinois. Cases have occurred in ages 9 to 91. Cases by county can be found on the IDPH website, as well as a list of local health departments who will have the most up to date information.

    Finally testing. Makes sense.

I just heard some very disturbing information about an assisted living facility in Evanston. We’re very much at the beginning of that curve.

    Oh boy…Here we go

At least during the depression, WW2, 9/11, the great recession, we could all congregate and drown our sorrows. Seriously, this is going to turn into a mental health pandemic as well, if it already hasn’t.

It’s going to be more bad news for a while. It’s probably going to get worse before it gets better. Try and keep your head up throughout it. We will get through this. Don’t give up and continue to heed the advice of medical professionals and experts about social distancing. When they say our actions today can have a big impact on others’ lives, its meaningful.

  6. - Ok - Wednesday, Mar 18, 20 @ 2:58 pm:

    Still not really testing broadly

  7. - ktkat1 - Wednesday, Mar 18, 20 @ 3:05 pm:

I heard the same thing about the nursing home in Evanston. I know many who are making calls but not sure if the response is coming in as it has for Willowbrook yet.

Did the Gov or IDPH say how many tests are being done? Curious about the raw number tests, by day, and the number of positives vs negatives, day over day, as well. Not to downplay the seriousness of this (because it’s absolutely bone-chilling serious) but to provide a full data set.

  9. - twowaystreet - Wednesday, Mar 18, 20 @ 3:09 pm:

The amount of test are published on the website along with the number of confirmed cases.

Adding to my previous question: I saw the post this morning that state labs were only processing about 300 tests a day. Just curious if today’s number of 128 new cases is out of those 300 daily tests or are there more tests happening at federal labs or CDC?

  11. - Arnold - Wednesday, Mar 18, 20 @ 3:11 pm:

    Thanks twowaystreet

  12. - twowaystreet - Wednesday, Mar 18, 20 @ 3:12 pm:

They aren’t tracking over time, but this morning when it said confirmed cases were at 160 the number of test were at 1,500. So, I presume the additional 128 cases are from 552 tests.

Until we can test everyone who exhibits symptoms, we’ll continue to be like the blind man looking for a black cat in a dark room.

A private company, Quest, is now doing tests in Chicago. Turn around time about 3 days.

  15. - Joe Bidenopolous - Wednesday, Mar 18, 20 @ 4:20 pm:

North Shore has its own test now too.

I’m not sure the number tested either there or at Quest are in the “tested” numbers from IDPH but they definitely have positives in their count.

== we’ll continue to be like the blind man looking for a black cat in a dark room.==

Succinct and to the point, as usual.

I can make some great video game recommendations that have helped keep millions of Americans from having the urge to go outside.

  18. - Pot calling kettle - Wednesday, Mar 18, 20 @ 4:44 pm:

Yesterday, LaSalle County reported 16 people had been tested, with 8 negatives and 8 still out.

    16 is not enough tests.

Those counties shown as “0″ on the IDPH web site’s map aren’t “0″, they should be labeled “?”.

  19. - Still anon - Wednesday, Mar 18, 20 @ 5:23 pm:

Two way, thanks. That data is useful. In theory the percentage of tests that are positive should go down as testing expands.

  20. - Still anon - Wednesday, Mar 18, 20 @ 5:25 pm:

I would be interested in some data about how many tests were taken but awaiting lab capacity. In other states, as labs ramp up there has been a backlog that needs to clear out.

  21. - SSL - Wednesday, Mar 18, 20 @ 5:58 pm:

It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you are stuck inside and have time, you can use this opportunity to improve your personal health. Exercise is a wonderful thing. Plenty of workout routines that don’t require equipment. Just go slow if you haven’t been doing much.

  22. - Pundent - Wednesday, Mar 18, 20 @ 6:33 pm:

While we’re not self-quarantining at my house we’re essentially sheltering in place. Really nowhere to go anyway. Sure people get on each other’s nerves but in the grand scheme of things not so bad. It’s just a moment in time. It allows a bit of time for reflection.
