An entertaining way to waste a few minutes on a Friday afternoon
Friday, Aug 28, 2020 - Posted by Rich Miller * If you have some time today, take a look at this 1986 video of Gov. Jim Thompson roasting Sen. Walter Dudycz, the only Chicago Republican in the Senate at the time… “After I realized your name was not part of an eye chart, I asked who you were” And if you don’t have much time today, click here and go to the 4-minute mark. Big Jim. Big man, big humor, with a big laugh too.
Laughing with, not at, and boy could he deliver a line.
So cool, thanks, Rich.

The video reminds me of all the Christmas gatherings at the Governor’s Mansion. Those of us on the staff for the Bureau of the Budget would put on a series of skits, and we pretty much had free rein. Governor Thompson could take it as well as he could give it, and it was not an unusual sight to see him laughing heartily. One time, during a skit about Dr. Mandeville, Governor Thompson laughed so hard, throwing his head back while doing so, and he slid right out of his seat, which was located in the front row. He got up, looked at Dr. Mandeville, and said, “Now Dr. Bob, THAT was funny.” May Big Jim rest in peace.
