Rep. Sean Casten announced today that his campaign is reserving $2.4M in air time in the Chicago media market and on cable that will run from Wednesday, September 16th through Election Day. This is the first of multiple buys the campaign intends to make during the cycle.
The campaign also released the first ad, “Molecular”. You can watch the ad here.
Rep. Sean Casten released the following statement:
“I spent my career as a businessman taking concrete steps to rebuild the economy and combat climate change — including harnessing the power of clean energy to create jobs. I’ve continued that work in Congress and will never stop fighting for the issues my constituents care about.”
SCRIPT
NARRATOR: Sean Casten — a scientist who built a successful company that used technology to clean up pollution, putting businesses to work fighting climate change.
NARRATOR: Sean pledged to keep people informed, holding more than 40 town hall meetings across the district.
CASTEN: Families have been through a lot this year, and it’s far from over. The way forward is to follow the science to control this pandemic and get our economy back on its feet.
CASTEN (featuring Casten’s family): I’m Sean Casten, and we approve this message.
BTW, the web ads he did such as the nerd ad were fantastic. So I don’t know what happened with this one? Maybe they brought in a black hole to suck all the life out of the ads.
B+ — Professional from start to finish, and the number of lens flares in a 30 second spot suggests that they asked J.J. Abrams to guest direct. The language used is effective, if awkward, suggesting research driven terms.
Its on major issues without hitting on specifics.
Watched it a few times, since, you know, they’ll air it a few times and what really stands out is they have a camera person inside of the house with the elderly person that’s supposed to be isolating to the point where they can’t have in person visits from family members..?
=== And where did they get that guy for the VO? ===
My money is he spent a couple of years doing advance rallies for the Obama Admin, etc, and is not completely self aware of how it comes of, but he does a good job.
B- Got his “keywords/key phrases” in for the true believers. Typical puff piece. I’m not sure he should get credit for townhalls, so not a high bar to jump over.
It’s a marker. As an incumbent running against Ives and her bigoted views known, the ad allows a simple recall of Casten, that he believes in science, and has empathy.
D- Zero attempt to appeal to Republicans and Independents but that is to be expected from a candidate who says out loud that bipartisanship is overrated.
Sean Casten is a hypocrite. His comments regarding the accusations aimed at Bret Kavanaugh and his silence regarding the accusations at Joe Biden, tells me everything I need to know.
You call yourself “Blue Dog Dem” and are wracked with concern over “hypocrisy,” so please share with us which Democratic candidates you will support in November.
The ad is a solid B. I’d probably give it a C if he was running against anyone other than Ives. But Casten’s objective is simply to remind people that he believes in facts and science.
Jeannie Ives supported the Rauner budget debacle. She broke with him on abortion. That was one of the few things I thought he got right.
Ives and Trump need to be thumped. I feel we are in some alternative universe. In today’s Republican Party Goldwater is a liberal.

I’m a Blue Dog who actually lives in the 6th. I’ve seen enough of the Jeanne Ives show both in Springfield and locally to state that Casten has my vote.

So self-described Blue Dog Dems can actually support Democratic candidates?

It’s a good thing he’s running away with this race and not relying on ads. And where did they get that guy for the VO?

I wonder if Hulu counts as cable. Last time he saturated the air with it. I saw it like 12X straight once….

The opposite of all things Ives.
Could’ve been better, but serviceable.

Have you … heard… of Jeanne Ives… and her bigoted views?
Yikes, man.
- Nagidam - Monday, Sep 14, 20 @ 12:17 pm:
The reality is he can put out these vanilla ads. How is Ives going to get on the air?
- Lucky Pierre - Monday, Sep 14, 20 @ 12:29 pm:
no surprise you support Sean Casten. is there a single Republican in Illinois you would vote for OW?

“Could’ve been better, but serviceable.”
Exactly right. And that’s all it needs to be when you’re running against Jeanne Ives.

… over the bigoted views of Jeanne Ives.
I mean, I have the receipts, you support Trump with his racist views, supporting Ives is on brand for you.
Up to you. You wanna pretend you aren’t supporting these candidates with these racist views.
I can start with your support of Trump on the economy… up to you.
Your choice.

But have the voters? Presumably more will be spent on attack ads later. He certainly did on Roskam. Those were the Hulu ads I mentioned earlier.

No, it’s considered Connected TV (CTV). Basically, any apps run through your TV would fall in this bucket.
