The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) today reported 2,630 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Illinois, including 42 additional confirmed deaths.

• Madison County: 1 female 90s
• Marion County: 1 male 70s, 1 male 80s
• Perry County: 1 female 60s
• Randolph County: 1 male 70s
• Rock Island County: 1 male 70s
• Saline County: 1 female 80s
• Sangamon County: 1 male 90s
• Shelby County: 1 female 70s, 1 female 80s
• St. Clair County: 1 female 80s, 1 female 90s

Currently, IDPH is reporting a total of 307,641 cases, including 8,878 deaths, in 102 counties in Illinois. The age of cases ranges from younger than one to older than 100 years. The preliminary seven-day statewide positivity for cases as a percent of total test from September 30 – October 6 is 3.5%. Within the past 24 hours, laboratories have reported 58,820 specimens for a total of 6,033,289. As of last night, 1,679 people in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 372 patients were in the ICU and 165 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.
Following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, IDPH is now reporting separately both confirmed and probable cases and deaths on its website. Reporting probable cases will help show the potential burden of COVID-19 illness and efficacy of population-based non-pharmaceutical interventions. IDPH will update these data once a week.

Good news in IDPH Region 4: The 7-day positivity rate is at 6.3% as of today (backdated to 10.04.2020). 2 more days in a row of below 6.5%, and the region gets its mitigations removed to rejoin Phase 4 in full.

Don’t forget Halloween. Especially with it being on a Saturday this year. And especially Halloween in downtown Springfield among other places (with the downtown bars).

Had an experience of quarantine last 6 days. My son at ISU came in had a fever last Thursday night over 100 was tired dragging all day. I figured he had the bug for sure. Got test and came back negative. He is a track runner and the next day had no fever or symptoms and resume his 5-10 mile daily runs. I figured he was just one of those mild cases. But clearly it does have one jumping when things happen. The negative test makes sense given what he did right after but it is all different for everyone.

The toll of the pandemic is shifting from the Chicago metro area to downstate.
Doing some quick calculations, between yesterday and the previous Tuesday:
Chicago + Collars = 60% of Cases, 42% of deaths
Downstate = 40% of Cases, 58% of deaths
Downstate is 35% of Illinois’ population.
So, crudely, cases are 5% higher and deaths are 23% higher downstate than they would be if they were proportionate to population.
Also, outside of the huge number of tests coming out of Champaign County, I would guess that many downstate counties are not testing enough - which is partly reflected in the higher case positivity rates in some of them.

Over the weekend went to Home Depot in Mattoon. Big signs about needing to wear a mask as you walk in with free masks available at the door. IDPH says Coles County has 1591 positives, 35 deaths as of today. Counted 15 people with no masks in the store. Downstate doing its part to grow those numbers.
