Question of the day

Thursday, Dec 3, 2020 - Posted by Rich Miller

* What’s your favorite charity and why?

And while you’re mulling that over, please click here and donate to Lutheran Social Services of Illinois. As I write this, we’re almost at $10,000 after about 24 hours. That’s great, but I know we can do just a bit better. Thanks!

Right now - Stacy Abrams can and is taking all my of money. Gotta have Georgia for Illinois to really get the federal help we so desperately need.

  2. - Grandson of Man - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 3:02 pm:

LSSI. Worked with them before, they were great.

  3. - Fly Creek - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 3:03 pm:

Favorite Illinois charity - Young at Heart Senior Pet Adoptions, because…dogs.
Non-Illinois charity - Stray Rescue of St. Louis. Because they provide abused and abandoned animals with the medical care and life they deserve. Their rescue stories are real tear-jerkers.

  4. - NIU Grad - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 3:07 pm:

I don’t know if it’s considered a charity, but Illinois-headquartered (and founded) Rotary International does amazing work supporting causes throughout the world.

  5. - Give Me A Break - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 3:09 pm:

Special Olympics. Just watching the faces of the participants when they compete brings joy. For a few moments they don’t have to wear any labels they are just enjoying the moments and the chance to be like everyone else.

    Living Lands & Waters

Led by Chad Pregracke out of East Moline, they have been organizing and cleaning up the banks of the Mississippi, Illinois, Ohio, and other rivers for over two decades. An amazing and truly inspirational person and organization.

I’m a fan of Marillac-St. Vincent Family Services. They’re small and locally focused on ending poverty in Chicago.

There are a lot of great organizations fighting diseases and poverty across the globe. This one, like LSSI, focuses closer to home, where the needs are just as great.

Also: Become a supporting member of your local NPR station. If you don’t know why, listen for a week, and take in a few podcasts. (Planet Money and On The Media are pure gold.)

  9. - Dance Band on the Titanic - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 3:19 pm:

Northern Illinois Food Bank. Far too many people are suffering from food insecurity at this time. They do great work.

  10. - MSIX - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 3:21 pm:

    Eastern Illinois Food Bank

They do great things with their funding and it’s very local.

  11. - JS Mill - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 3:22 pm:

Right now? My two kids. Kidding.

Wounded Warrior Project. I didn’t serve. My Dad did. In the past two decades we have sent a lot of soldiers off to fight. We have, as a nation, fallen short in supporting our wounded warriors. This organization is making a difference.

  12. - Colin O'Scopy - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 3:27 pm:

Misericordia Heart of Mercy. The residents there are proof there is a God and the people who run it are God’s emissaries.

  13. - Bourbon Street - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 3:29 pm:

Misericordia. Helping people with disabilities live as independently as possible is the work of the angels.

  14. - FosterKidLogiv - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 3:31 pm:

I might be bias but the Foster Care Alumni of America-Illinois Chapter. We were founded in 2012 with the mission of erasing the stark differences between those from the foster care system and those who have not been system exposed. The FCAAIL has fought to call attention to Child Abuse and neglect as well as fight for a better system for those in it.

Besides my alma mater, my local Lions Club foundation. And National Coalition of Cancer Survivors; dear friend has been battling cancer for years.

  16. - West Side the Best Side - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 3:32 pm:

Greater Chicago Food Depository. Not only donate, but also volunteer there as well, always a great experience. They are the Cook County food bank for so many people in need during these trying times.

  17. - Bigtwich - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 3:49 pm:

The Poshard Foundation for Abused Children addresses problems of abuse and neglect in Southern Illinois.

    Journeys-The Road Home in Palatine.
Great services of all sorts for hundreds of homeless across the NW suburbs. includes coordination of PADS sites and temporary shelter, counseling, health maintenance, job training and placement, moves into affordable housing. Best I’ve seen in that space.

  19. - Keyrock - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 4:10 pm:

Greater Chicago Food Depository, in this time of need.

  20. - H-W - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 4:10 pm:

(I did not read prior posts, so as not to bias my thoughts).

I like the Salvation Army. I am not an evangelical, not a fundamentalist, but I am steeped in the Christian tradition (I respect all beliefs including Atheism).

I like the Salvation Army because almost all donations and gifts serve the poor who seek their assistance, regardless. I think the rates is over 90% of all cash goes to service, not salaries.

I also like the Salvation Army because the people who serve are really, really dedicated to helping and feeding and clothing the poor. They are just very well-intended people, who act on their beliefs.

Peace be with you all this holiday season.

  21. - Cheswick - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 4:14 pm:

National: Fisher House. They provide a place to stay for free for people from out of town who are visiting their loved one at a VA hospital. Someone in my family was a director recipient of their benevolence.

Local: Boys & Girls Club of Springfield. They do good stuff for kids. And families.

  22. - TinyDancer(FKASue) - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 4:27 pm:

    Greater Chicago Food Depository.
My heart goes out to those who have to struggle just to put food on the table. And now more than ever.

  23. - Bruce( no not him) - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 4:30 pm:

Habitat for Humanity. A charity that has its recipients put in sweat equity to their own home.
And Jimmy Carter still builds houses with them.

  24. - Ron Burgundy - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 4:33 pm:

Besides a couple I serve with that I won’t mention, as a pet lover I like supporting local animal shelters.

  25. - FormerGOPer - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 4:38 pm:

Animal Protective League in Springfield. Spend a lot of time there cleaning litter boxes. For the humans, Kumler Outreach Ministries. Have donated for many years.

  26. - Cook street - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 4:49 pm:

Contact Ministries and Central Illinois Food Bank.Grass roots level help for the poor.

  27. - RNUG - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 4:50 pm:

The last few years most of my charitable donations have been sent to the Central Illinois Foodbank and to the Asbury Children’s Supper Hour. Both organizations are primarily ran by volunteers and almost all the money goes directly to services. The other one that gets a semi-regular contribution is the Salvation Army, again because most the money goes directly to services.

  28. - Behind the Scenes - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 4:55 pm:

Shriners Hospitals for Children. We who wear the red fez refer to it as the “World’s Greatest Philanthropy”.

  29. - Jimmy Jazz - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 5:23 pm:

    Stacy Abrams’ Fair Fight

  30. - Manchester - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 6:40 pm:

    Central IL Food Bank.

  31. - truthteller - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 6:53 pm:

Mission 22, assists families of service members who commit suicide, which was averaging 22 deaths a DAY

  32. - yinn - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 7:19 pm:

The local homeless shelter gets more of my charitable dollars than anywhere else. Most important reason is to take care of our own locally. But I can’t discount previous experience with being homeless, sheltering a homeless person with intellectual disabilities until his family could be found, and the fact that I know and trust the leadership of the organization.

  33. - Nearly Normal - Thursday, Dec 3, 20 @ 7:25 pm:

Midwest Food Bank started in a farm family’s barn in 2003 to provide food for local foodbanks. It has grown exponentially and has divisions in other states, Haiti and in Africa. They are a first responder with the Salvation Army with family food boxes to feed a family of 4 for 4 or 5 days.
