Question of the day

Monday, Feb 1, 2021 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Lots of people sent me this Andre Thapedi campaign radio ad today

* Even more folks sent me this tweet…

* Still true as of this afternoon…

* The Question: Are you being bombarded with anything particular today?

“Chicago teachers won’t teach in-person b/c they prefer their ’second homes’ in CA & FL.”

This is beyond foolish and Amy knows it.

Chicago teachers could simply fly back and forth in their private jets.

    – MrJM

  2. - MG85 - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 2:57 pm:

I am tired of being bombarded by people I don’t know who are overly concerned with my car’s expired warranty.

  3. - RNUG - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 2:58 pm:

Not political … but several car dealers because I’ve been shopping online (and in the real world) for a particular used car.

Just got off the phone from answering a survey on why I didn’t buy one car …

  4. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 2:59 pm:

Yeah, the “Amy Jacobson, Chicago Public School Parent”, I’ve gotten quite a bit of bombarding, and even more laughs.

Calling Amy Jacobson “Chicago Public School Parent” is of the same trolling as calling Barack Obama “Former Chicago Resident”.

But, when I see Jacobson on Fox News, it seems like a logical step. Jacobson, professionally, needs to pounce on opportunities like this, to be seen as a talking head to the silly… homes in Florida and California to seemingly, left-handedly, turn on teachers with a cause flag of wealth and privilege, as teachers’ earnings aren’t “elite” by any measure. Jacobson needs to be seen on platforms like Fox News. She knows it, to be relevant.

Yep, got quite a few bombardments, and giggles too at her.

Same as everyday since March, IDES casework is the Groundhog Day

  6. - Dotnonymous - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 3:09 pm:

The luxurious lifestyle of Chicago Teachers…exposed.

Still can’t make up better…than this.

  7. - Sue - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 3:14 pm:

This is a pretty dumb news report BUT say what you want- Lori Lightfoot is flailing at her job. I am hesitant to say it but Preckwinkel would have been a better option in terms of competency

  8. - Chicago Cynic - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 3:16 pm:

Cmon Fox. Even for you guys failing to identify Amy Jacobsen as a right wing radio host is too much.

  9. - Slugger O’Toole - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 3:20 pm:

Hah. MG85. You beat me to it. Bought a new car with a 10 year extended warranty last February (which now has all of 2,000 miles on it). I get the warranty robocall calls at least once if not more per day.

  10. - City Guy - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 3:22 pm:

Like MG85 I have been receiving regular spam calls on my car’s warranty expiring.

  11. - Responsa - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 3:23 pm:

A Naperville school district made the news last week saying they’re going to give district taxpayers a refund on their property taxes. The shutdown resulted in reduced expenses and a budget surplus of around 10 million. Now everybody on line is buzzing and wondering if their school districts will follow suit. WTG Naperville.

  12. - Deb H - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 3:24 pm:

Car jackings & murders increased & I thought they attributed car jackings in part to teenagers. Murders are also up even if robberies are down.

  13. - SWIL_Voter - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 3:25 pm:

The Charlie Kirk video lying about the culturally responsive learning standards is all over my Facebook. Charlie Meier is urging people to call their legislator to oppose the rule

  14. - Taxpayer Bob - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 3:26 pm:

At the end of this CTU contract the average teacher will be making $99, 500. On the IRS pay scale : this makes them the upper 20% of wage earners. Plus , the present value calculation of many of their public pensions is in the multi- millions. Nice gig if you can get it in the private sector.

  15. - Anonymous - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 3:35 pm:

I’m being bombarded with snow today.

  16. - ChicagoBars - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 3:38 pm:

For months now a day with just 2 expiring car warranty robocalls would be a good day.

    Every. Dang. Day.

    Sincerely,
Guy who hasn’t owned a car since at least 2012.

  17. - Chicago Mom - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 3:41 pm:

Many CPS teachers are doing quite well financially (salary plus health insurance plus pension). I don’t know why there’s a movement to “other ” Amy . I guess some people are jealous of successful women.

  18. - ;) - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 3:44 pm:

    That Thapedi jam is hilarious.

  19. - Ok - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 3:46 pm:

You are right, “Chicago Mom,” Amy is just like us. I can’t tell you how many times we have bumped into her at the local murderer’s pool.

    Sundays, amirite?

  20. - Dog Lover - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 3:47 pm:

Siding offers for my log home.

  21. - Ok - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 3:47 pm:

Also - how have I never actually received a phone call about my car’s warranty expiring? What list are you all on?

  22. - OneMan - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 3:49 pm:

Ok, the funny thing is I get them on my work number as well. Have no idea why that happens.

  23. - Excitable Boy - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 3:49 pm:

    - I guess some people are jealous of successful women. -

Yes, most consider flushing your career down the toilet by partying with a suspected wife murderer to be the true definition of success.

  24. - Streamwood Retiree - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 3:50 pm:

    MG85, ChicagoBoars
Especially cars I traded in seven years ago. Plus two more that I’ve traded in since then. Ever since I got rocked with $5,000 for electronic modules on my 2005 Impala, we trade them in when the factory warranty expires. Had a GM extended warranty on my 2012 Impala. Actually got a rebate when I bought my 2020 Equinox last September. Dealer was loaded with cars, end of the month, no garbage about “paint warranty” and other ripoffs. Good deal plus huge factory rebate. Nobody buying cars last September.

  25. - AT Fan - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 3:57 pm:

Thapedi’s tune has been my ring tone for 3 years.

  26. - Rudy’s teeth - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 3:57 pm:

Most cell phones send unknown numbers to voicemail. If I pick up the call and it’s telemarketing, I switch to the few Croatian phrases that I remember from childhood. Works every time.

  27. - Chicagonk - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 4:10 pm:

My partners a teacher and there are 5 teachers at her school that showed up today. Not all teachers are backing the CTU on this one.

  28. - Frank talks - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 4:14 pm:

Lori didn’t go on the show?
She could have said “let me be clear” over and over as at all of her press conferences.
Then the whole Fox nation would be like oh I get it, its so clear now. Thanks Lori your the best.

Amy just muddied up the issue not being clear. You’d think she would call the mayor to team up on bashing teachers. Clearly

  29. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 4:15 pm:

=== Many CPS teachers are doing quite well financially (salary plus health insurance plus pension).===
Yes they don’t make much at first but if they stick with it they can be comfortably middle class.
    === I don’t know why there’s a movement to “other ” Amy .===
Disagreeing with someone is “othering”? It’s a “movement?” Ya don’t say.
=== I guess some people are jealous of successful women.===
I guess some people are. What does this last sentence have to do with Amy Jacobsen?

  30. - City Zen - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 4:34 pm:

I thought their second homes were in Venezuela and Puerto Rico?

  31. - SpiDem - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 4:35 pm:

That Thapedi ad feels like a Rickey Hendon production

  32. - CTU Member - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 4:55 pm:

Take Amy out of the equation and in several instances, it’s true. In my own school, at least one teacher was doing remote this fall from Florida and another Mexico. Several former co-workers at other schools report the same thing.

Is it rampant? No, but it’s happening. And CTU doesn’t have the support from inside the union that it had for the last strike.

Consider that CPS High Schools have no date to return to, and all of those teachers are being paid for staying remote. Why, there’s even some chatter that HS teachers may jump out of CTU to form their own union.

Tired of the political grandstanding and CTU sticking its nose where it doesn’t belong, they are.

The union is very divided here, and it may be overplaying it’s hand. Don’t fall for the terminally online.

  33. - Rich Miller - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 5:00 pm:

    ===Is it rampant? No, but it’s happening===

And so what if it is? Seriously. If you work remotely from your house and don’t ever go into the job site, who cares where that house is?

  34. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 5:04 pm:

===If you work remotely from your house and don’t ever go into the job site, who cares where that house is?===

    Ironic, isn’t it?

Are the same people complaining about being “locked down” are now complaining that you are required to be locked down at your house if you are working “remotely”?

That is comically tone deaf to their own complaints?

  35. - Slugger O - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 5:10 pm:

===If you work remotely from your house and don’t ever go into the job site, who cares where that house is?===

We are risking a road trip next week to visit colleges my HS senior has been accepted to. Not calling them in absent. They will attend from the back seat of the family truckster.

  36. - MyTwoCents - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 5:17 pm:

Let’s say there are some teachers with second homes & let’s say they were working remotely from there. First of all, big deal. Secondly, is it because of their salary or because the teacher married somebody who makes a lot of money?

  37. - Mama - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 6:33 pm:

I would love to see Amy downer spend a month teaching in the city of Chicago and living on a teachers salary. Bet she would apologize to the teachers afterwards.

  38. - Edgewater ED - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 6:52 pm:

CTU Member I would not call 71% of the union members authorizing the potential strike of CPS locks them out “very divided”. It’s a super majority.

  39. - JS Mill - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 7:06 pm:

=$99,500= Heavens to Betsy, someone with a college degree plus, and 15 years of experience making enough money to rent an apartment in Chicago. How awful. /s

Our teachers usually have a second home, but in the south of France. I guess those CPS teachers need to aim higher.

  40. - Anonymous - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 7:13 pm:

I know of a Evanston teacher that is teaching from Europe. He will be heading back soon to get his shot and start in school teaching on the 16th.

    Being bombarded with anything today:

    1. Unsubstantiable anecdotes from people who know somebody who knows somebody who’s getting away with something they wish they could get away with

    2. Ennui

  42. - harp5339 - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 7:26 pm:

If you’re going to blatantly make something up, at least aim for plausibility. New Buffalo would have been the better vacation home choice than California.

  43. - Publius - Monday, Feb 1, 21 @ 8:48 pm:

So much I am just now catching up.

  44. - GOP Rebuilder - Tuesday, Feb 2, 21 @ 11:34 am:

More of the far right pushing RINO, “Primary Him” narratives on Kinzinger. But these are the same people who haven’t backed a winning candidate in 6 years for anything other than state rep.

  45. - facebook advertising - Wednesday, Feb 10, 21 @ 9:45 am:

Asking questions are truly pleasant thing if you are
not understanding anything totally, except this post offers pleasant understanding
    even.
