The Illinois legislature’s biggest failure during the pandemic has been its complete abdication of responsibility over the management of the pandemic itself – Gov. Pritzker has been running the state’s response via executive fiat for over a year.
The result has been a disaster for democratic norms. Lawmakers should have stepped in and authorized the governor’s emergency rules or passed their own laws at the start of the pandemic. But they did neither.
No matter their excuses, Illinois lawmakers no longer have reasons for inaction. The curve has been flattened. There’s no risk of running out of hospital beds or ICU resources. Daily cases have collapsed. And most importantly, vaccines are being rolled out at an increasing rate. Herd immunity is expected by the end of April.
Gov. Pritzker should be stripped of his powers by the legislature immediately. That’s especially true now that Pritzker has added another incremental phase to his plan instead of fast-tracking a full reopening.
Yes, because a body that officially sat in near silence throughout the pandemic ought to now step up and run the state because that would somehow be better.

…Adding… And yes I’m aware, as commenters have pointed out, that their “facts” are ridiculous as well. In my defense, I just figured that was a given.

Rich, I think your first impression is correct - the authors know nothing about how the General Assembly operates. Although your second impression is correct too - they are being totally disingenuous.

Statements like this are a pretty clear indication that the advice that follows is suspect at best.
Also, the state has a chief executive. The role of the chief executive is to oversee the day-to-day operations of the state.

The legislature did pass it’s own laws, it’s just that it did so well in advance of the pandemic, and those laws give an awful lot of emergency public health authority to the Governor. I don’t think I mind this; having a single person managing government response in an emergency is one of the fundamental justifications for investing executive power in a single person. And unwinding those laws would be no small task.
But really, the legislature’s actions so far shouldn’t be seen as silence, but as assent. They could’ve come back at any point and passed anything. If they didn’t, it’s because, by and large, they approve of what JB has done on the pandemic.

The thing about Glennon and his ridiculous idea of journalism towards opinion is that his opinion makes ZERO sense to the actual way something (in this case, a legislature) actually operates and is operating in real time.
It’s pathetic.

The reason it’s “either” is because when it’s about ignorance for a grift, you need to make the marks think you have “all angles” covered.

Governor Pritzker took the lead when others would not. He has done a fine job as the chief executive in managing this crisis and disease. I’m quite happy the legislative and judicial branches stood back and let him make the tough decision.

Wirepoints is quickly becoming the uncle that read a few books on monetarist economics and now think he is an economist with a simple solution to fix the city/state/country.
I’d say do better, but if it walks and quacks like a duck…

It’s Wirepoints so while the answer is usually a combination of ignorance and disingenuousness, in this case I’d go with 100% the latter. Wildly disingenuous. With Wirepoints it’s always about GOP partisan gain. Never about the facts. Why anyone treats them as anything other than an arm of the GOP is beyond me.

I am so old I remember when the President of the US grounded all planes without Congressional approval, how about you? I don’t recall any GOP outrage over the disruption to commerce.
