* The governor was answering a reporter’s question today about the remap when he said that the final, detailed Census numbers wouldn’t be distributed to the states until September but that Illinois has to act by June 30th. That claim prompted this hollering from a Statehouse reporter…
That’s a fallacy! June 30th is a fallacy!
A fallacy? Not if you’re in the super-majority party. From the constitution…
If no redistricting plan becomes effective by June 30 of that year, a Legislative Redistricting Commission shall be constituted not later than July 10. The Commission shall consist of eight members, no more than four of whom shall be members of the same political party.
The Speaker and Minority Leader of the House of Representatives shall each appoint to the Commission one Representative and one person who is not a member of the General Assembly. The President and Minority Leader of the Senate shall each appoint to the Commission one Senator and one person who is not a member of the General Assembly. […]
If the Commission fails to file an approved redistricting plan, the Supreme Court shall submit the names of two persons, not of the same political party, to the Secretary of State not later than September 1.
Not later than September 5, the Secretary of State publicly shall draw by random selection the name of one of the two persons to serve as the ninth member of the Commission.
As we’ve talked about many times before, the Republicans want this lottery because it gives them a 50-50 chance at drawing the map. The super-majority Democrats do not want this lottery because it gives the Republicans a 50-50 chance at drawing the map.

to be fair, suggesting that June 30th is a hard deadline IS a fallacy
- Annonin' - Wednesday, May 19, 21 @ 2:40 pm:
The reporter promoting the fallacy theory probably always blast at “do nothing” government. If you don’t hit the date then you are ceding the duty to redraw district by June 30.
Anything else is a fallacy

===a hard deadline===
It is if you’re a Democrat.
- EssentialStateEmployeeFromChatham - Wednesday, May 19, 21 @ 2:44 pm:
Was that reporter from Channel 20?
- Just Me 2 - Wednesday, May 19, 21 @ 2:49 pm:
In the reporter’s defense, the Constitution has a process for creating a new map after June 30. The problem is J.B. just doesn’t like it.
- Chicagonk - Wednesday, May 19, 21 @ 2:56 pm:
Couldn’t the Supreme Court just submit Sam McCann of the completely independent Conservative Party as the second individual?
- Rich Miller - Wednesday, May 19, 21 @ 3:10 pm:
===Couldn’t the Supreme Court just submit===
In theory. lol
In practice, the Supremes are a very bipartisan bunch. No way will they do something like that.
- Magellan - Wednesday, May 19, 21 @ 3:20 pm:
This is the correct political response. Probably the only response with once in a decade stakes. However the GOP claims that it will reject the lottery outcome in favor of SB 1325

=== Republicans want this lottery because it gives them a 50-50 chance at drawing the map. The super-majority Democrats do not want this lottery because it gives the Republicans a 50-50 chance at drawing the map.===
Pithy-Perfect.
The political wants and desires framed in the timetable/deadline to achieve those wants and desires.
- SpiDem - Wednesday, May 19, 21 @ 3:22 pm:
Dream scenario. Dems fail to get maps done in time. Commission named and hit predictable impasse. Supreme Court submits names. Jesse White reaches into the hat and pulls out the name….

Who is the reporter?
- Norseman - Wednesday, May 19, 21 @ 3:31 pm:
The reporter was out of line.
Quibble about the terminology used by Pritzker, June 30 is the deadline for the General Assembly to act. A body elected by citizens of the State to represent them. From there on it’s in the hands of a commission consisting of 8 people at first with an added member if needed.
- Constitutional Lawyer - Wednesday, May 19, 21 @ 3:35 pm:
If you want to get technical after June 30th there could be a constitutional crisis. The Constitution requires the Commission to finalize its map by August 10. If they don’t, the Supreme Court nominates 2 people and one is added. That new 9 member commission has to finalize a map by October 5th. There is no backup if a Commission doesn’t adopt a map by October 5.
- anon2 - Wednesday, May 19, 21 @ 4:53 pm:
If there’s no map by June 30, Democrats will at least have the consolation that if the Republicans win the draw, surely they would practice what they preach and have a transparent and bipartisan process without partisan gerrymandering. Right?

“Who is the reporter?”
My money’s on Greg Bishop
- Illiniwack - Wednesday, May 19, 21 @ 7:41 pm:
I am starting to wonder whether the legislature will indeed redistrict the Supreme Court map. It would be absolute fools if they don’t.
- Osborne Smith III - Wednesday, May 19, 21 @ 8:38 pm:
@ danray at 6:05PM
Can confirm that the reporter in question was actually NOT Greg Bishop, for a change.
- Give Me A Break - Thursday, May 20, 21 @ 8:17 am:
Bishop would have asked, why won’t the Democrats commit to a fair map for Illinois’ US Senators,
