Question of the day

Wednesday, May 19, 2021 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Former Gov. George Ryan was at the Sangamo Club yesterday for a book-signing, so I stopped by. First thing he asked was where my book was. I told him I forgot my copy at home, but said I’d bring it up to Kankakee this summer…

* The Question: Caption?

  35. - Give Us Barabbas - Wednesday, May 19, 21 @ 2:46 pm:

Back in the day, when some reporter would be giving George a harder time than usual, he’d sometimes make a diversion by asking said reporter; “You want a job?” Everybody would guffaw and he’d get out of the scrum or take a new question topic. I think he did that to Magliari a time or two, and maybe Kelly Smith. The underlying implication I got out of his joke was that the reporter was trying too hard to make an impression of toughness for his or her audience, not that said reporter was auditioning for a staff job. But you can certainly count up the former Springfield reporters that ended up as state spokespersons for yourself.

this is what you should be thinking about: Who you are… in this moment of time… and who you want to be. You get one life. You decide how you’re gonna spend it. Fortunately… there is no better place for self-reflection… than detention.

  38. - EssentialStateEmployeeFromChatham - Wednesday, May 19, 21 @ 3:30 pm:

“Rich, what on earth has happened to Channel 20’s news since I was Governor?”

  39. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, May 19, 21 @ 3:37 pm:

You’re a wise and considerate young man, Rich.

And you’re a great man, Mr. Ryan. There’s much I can learn from you.

Whatever I can do to help, Rich. You’re young, I’m old and sick. What we will do together in the next few months will make history, Rich, history. It’s never been done before. Not even Mike Madigan would dream that such a thing could be possible.

  40. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, May 19, 21 @ 3:41 pm:

GHR: We’ll put the band back together, do a few gigs, we get some bread. Bang, Five thousand bucks. Save the school

Rich: Yeah, well, getting the band back together might not that be that easy, George.

GHR: What are you talking about?

Rich: They split, they all took straight jobs.

GHR: Yeah, so you know where they are. You said you were gonna keep in touch with them.

Rich: Well… I got a couple of leads, a few phone numbers, but I mean, how many of them visited or even wrote you, huh?

GHR: They’re not the kinda guys who write letters. You were outside, I was inside. You were supposed to keep in touch with the band. I kept asking you if we were gonna play again.

Rich: Well, what was I gonna do? Take away your only hope? Take away the very thing that kept you going in there? I took the liberty of … you, okay?

    GHR: You lied to me.

Rich: It wasn’t a lie, it was just…
