The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) today reported 1,542 new confirmed and probable cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Illinois, including 42 additional deaths. In addition, 64% of Illinois adults have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose and 47% of Illinois adults are fully vaccinated, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Currently, IDPH is reporting a total of 1,371,884 cases, including 22,536 deaths, in 102 counties in Illinois. The age of cases ranges from younger than one to older than 100 years. Within the past 24 hours, laboratories have reported 79,529 specimens for a total of 24,051,654. As of last night, 1,488 individuals in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 404 patients were in the ICU and 226 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.
The preliminary seven-day statewide positivity for cases as a percent of total test from May 13-19, 2021 is 2.2%. The preliminary seven-day statewide test positivity from May 13-19, 2021 is 2.7%.
A total of 10,640,990 vaccines have been administered in Illinois as of last midnight. The seven-day rolling average of vaccines administered daily is 65,998 doses. Yesterday, 89,832 doses were reported administered in Illinois.

In February I had great hopes about how low cases would be at the end of May…. Those have been dashed.
Alas it appears that 1,200 - 1,800 cases a day is where this thing simmers because people will not vaccinate themselves and still take the most basic of precautions.
I support the Bridge Phase and Phase 5. The vaccine works and at some point we need to move past those who refuse to take the jab.

So many seniors (60-100+) continue to appear in this list of the dead. Most must not have taken the vaccine. How many of your friends, relatives, and fellow citizens have to die, especially in your age group, for you to see how wrong you’ve been? It is so easy to protect yourself and get back to normal. Help those who are having trouble accessing the vaccine.

Cool Papa Bell - am I wrong to be more optimistic? The numbers this week are noticeably down from last week, teens are getting vaccinated (and adults are inching along), seasonality may kick in with the warmer weather…
On the down side, that Washington University study has me over the “the unvaxed can fend for themselves” - even if the vaxes prevent nearly all serious cases and deaths, they leave 5-15% vulnerable to infection, and apparently even mild cases may have profound longterm consequences on life expectancy. Like last Spring, we loosened up about 1 month too soon.

Hopefully we can keep these numbers stable and bring about a further decline. Seeing almost 90K vaccines administered yesterday is encouraging.
We’re now at the Covid by choice stage of the disease. The American Cancer Society had success in curbing smoking years’ back by running PSAs of people with lung cancer who expressed regret. Perhaps something similar could be done with Covid patients? And unlike smoking protecting yourself takes a matter of minutes as opposed to kicking a life long habit. Outside of a disease which makes vaccination unfeasible, there’s no reason to see these kinds of numbers in otherwise healthy adults.

Know anyone who won’t get a covid-19 vaccine? Cancer patients may or may not…depending on treatment regimen…be able to get the vaccine. Thus they are truly dependent on others not spreading the virus to them with their compromised immune systems if in deep treatment. You could be affecting the health of someone else in a very deep way if you spread the virus. VAX up.

Evanston pitched a shutout today - 0 cases for the first time since August, in a town of 70,000. Northwestern had only 1 case in the last week. Vaccination rates are 1-dose, 79% of eligible; fully vaxed, 63% of eligible.
