Because… Chicago!
Tuesday, Jul 13, 2021 - Posted by Rich Miller * From Mark Maxwell’s WCIA interview of US Sen. Dick Durbin…
I asked for evidence of this Chicago gangs shooting Downstate police thing last night. I haven’t yet heard back. * Related…

Ingraham and Carlson have both spread dangerous lies about COVID and the vaccines. They absolutely have blood on their hands. They don’t care and neither do their viewers. This country can’t last under these conditions. The people who get their news from Fox and Newsmax and OAN functionally occupy a separate reality

I really do wish he would retire. maybe he could spend his “golden years” someplace besides the senate. I am a Boomer but good grief it is time we all let go.
- DuPage Dem - Tuesday, Jul 13, 21 @ 11:10 am:
This is both inaccurate and racist. Doesn’t feel like Durbin’s been firing on all political cylinders lately.
- Captain Obvious - Tuesday, Jul 13, 21 @ 11:18 am:
I don’t know if the cause is gang bangers “coming down from Chicago”, but it seems like there are more shootings and gunplay reported in places like Springfield, Decatur, and Champaign than ever before. If true, I hope the police can get a better handle on it before the problem escalates to Chicago levels.
- Almost the Weekend - Tuesday, Jul 13, 21 @ 11:30 am:
Alot of the gun violence has boiled over from the past year due to the lockdown of COVID in my opinion. Police in downstate communities should have been more prepared for this scenario.
However, there needs to be a socioeconomic study on the individuals who lived in the Robert Taylor Homes and where they were moved too and where they are now. That would be a fascinating read.
- NIU Grad - Tuesday, Jul 13, 21 @ 11:34 am:
Maybe this explains the uptick in violent crimes happening in all parts of the country, including rural?
I don’t see how this narrative is helping anything right now, especially when he doesn’t have a reelection to worry about next year…Come on, man.
- thisjustinagain - Tuesday, Jul 13, 21 @ 11:34 am:
Durbin never met a gun he didn’t hate; easier to blame inanimate objects instead of criminals and “go easy on criminals” Democratic policies than admit the total failure of your party’s platform. But as for the Chicago gangs downstate comment, maybe he needs some facts, like gangs and other criminals exist statewide already.
- Contrarian - Tuesday, Jul 13, 21 @ 11:36 am:
Almost the Weekend - you are correct, that would be a fascinating read. Chris Kennedy raised it when he ran for Governor, but with his loss went any chance to truly explore the topic.
- RNUG - Tuesday, Jul 13, 21 @ 11:42 am:
I don’t know if Durbin is right or wrong, but some of the local newspaper reports, SPD press releases, plus the 217 problems and scanner groups do report that of the illegal possession firearms arrests are from out of town people.

== Durbin never met a gun he didn’t hate; easier to blame inanimate objects instead of criminals and “go easy on criminals” Democratic policies==
We have by far the highest incarceration rate on earth and also, by far, the highest number of guns per capita. Not surprisingly we have the highest gun death rate in the developed world. There seems to be pretty high statistical relevance to the position we have a gun problem, and virtually no evidence for the claim of “go easy on criminals” policies

===I don’t know if Durbin is right or wrong===
Which is why I reached out to him.
- Bruce( no not him) - Tuesday, Jul 13, 21 @ 12:11 pm:
Wait, I thought the illegal guns were going into Chicago? Now they are coming out of Chicago?

–Ingraham and Carlson have both spread dangerous lies about COVID and the vaccines. They absolutely have blood on their hands. They don’t care and neither do their viewers–
But conservatives aren’t the only ones hesitant to take the vaccine; diverse urban communities are similarly pessimistic about the vaccine.
Will you hold the same standard to these folks? Or just ones you disagree with politically?
- Joe Bidenopolous - Tuesday, Jul 13, 21 @ 12:44 pm:
Ol’ Dick Durbin, bringing the state together
Take out “too many guns” and that statement could’ve easily come from an Eastern Bloc member

== diverse urban communities are similarly pessimistic about the vaccine.==
Please show me this data.
== Will you hold the same standard to these folks? Or just ones you disagree with politically?==
What standard are you even talking about? Yes, people should get the vaccine. Whether they’ve been fed lies by Carlson and Ingraham or not. My kids act like this. “Well she did it too.” Grow up
- 17% Solution - Tuesday, Jul 13, 21 @ 12:50 pm:
SWIL_Voter didn’t say “conservatives” he/she said “Ingraham and Carlson.”
- 17% Solution - Tuesday, Jul 13, 21 @ 12:56 pm:
Durbin voted for the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. What is your basis for saying he is going easy on criminals?
- @misterjayem - Tuesday, Jul 13, 21 @ 1:01 pm:
“Wait, I thought the illegal guns were going into Chicago? Now they are coming out of Chicago?”
It’s the Circle of L̶i̶f̶e̶ Death.

Well, the carjacking rampage is providing a steady stream of much more dependable cars making longer road trips more feasible.
- Rabble - Tuesday, Jul 13, 21 @ 2:55 pm:
Mr. Durbin seems to be a man of many words and not much else. I remember seeing him speak in Cairo in the mid-90s with optimism about the future of the town while the public housing system under his leadership in Cairo was quietly crumbling and now is gone.
- Ben Tre - Tuesday, Jul 13, 21 @ 3:20 pm:
You wouldn’t know it from Illinois news reports, but our state actually ranks 19th in per capita violent crime. Half the crime rate of #1 (Alaska). One drive by shooting is one too many, but some perspective would still be appreciated.
