Question of the day

Wednesday, Jul 14, 2021 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Last night…

* From the end of the editorial

So Chicago has a lakefront eyesore and the Bears have an inadequate stadium. Chicagoans? They have the financial risk Daley promised they wouldn’t have.

Mayor Lightfoot and Chicago aldermen, don’t repeat your predecessors’ cave. If team owners want to be the Arlington Heights Bears, they have that right. You might, though, ask that they dismantle and take with them the seating bowl they insisted be built to appease them.

Chicago’s beleaguered taxpayers then would have what they previously had: a stadium that is comfortably sized for soccer and many other events — and that honors American soldiers.

I doubt the city and state could legally make that happen, but whatevs.

* The Question: How do you feel about the future of that editorial board post-purge?

    Nowhere to go but up.
But since I cancelled my subscription when the Alden deal went through, I’m counting on you, Rich, to let me know if there’s any improvement.

  2. - Kirk Hartley - Wednesday, Jul 14, 21 @ 3:33 pm:

    1) Would love to see Bears move out and be replaced by lots of football and soccer games involving regional universities. Wisconsin/Notre Dame this fall is an example. And those would bring tourists to town.
2)LOL on the commentary by Rich and others. Like Keyrock, I now refuse to subscribe to Tribune; I simply will not pay money to those people (not to mention awful web site with respect to subscriptions, and awful service when I did subscribe to paper and digital).

    More Honesty

    Less Hurricanes

  4. - Advocate - Wednesday, Jul 14, 21 @ 3:37 pm:

It’s ludicrous - the theater critic now runs the EB? I need to call and cancel because $27.72 a month for that nonsense online only is way too much.

  5. - Your Mom - Wednesday, Jul 14, 21 @ 3:38 pm:

    Amazing..that people still read newspapers.

You valued Statehouse Chick *that* much.

The reporting *and* reporters are worth every dime.

  7. - Chicagonk - Wednesday, Jul 14, 21 @ 3:44 pm:

Editorials no longer have much impact and the money would be better spent on reporting.

  8. - West Sider - Wednesday, Jul 14, 21 @ 3:55 pm:

Imagine that- editorials that do not ignore the paper’s own reporting, or insult the values of the preponderance of Chicagoans. Maybe that’s Alden’s evil plan- publish a newspaper people might actually read- why didn’t Statehouse Chick think of that?

  9. - John Lee Pettimore, III - Wednesday, Jul 14, 21 @ 3:55 pm:

I have felt for a long time that a city’s flagship newspaper’s editorial board should champion their city, call out injustice, root out corruption and celebrate good things.

The Tribune editorial board, led by Kristen McQueary openly rooted against Chicago and her people. She routinely suggested people should leave the City and the state for that matter. She wished for failure and celebrated misery. Good riddance to her and John Kass. I haven’t thought about either of them until Rich posted this question. And I probably won’t again for a long while.

  10. - Anyone Remember - Wednesday, Jul 14, 21 @ 3:58 pm:

A Step in the right direction. Perhaps they can revisit some of the more egregious editorials of the “Hurricane Moutza era” ??

  11. - Lincoln Lad - Wednesday, Jul 14, 21 @ 4:11 pm:

As glad as I was to see Kass resign, I dropped my subscription last week. They bumped my rate about 15 times what it was. When I asked how they could do it without asking me, they said that I agreed to them being able to change rates without my consent when I signed on. I’m done with them…

“1) Would love to see Bears move out and be replaced by lots of football and soccer games involving regional universities. Wisconsin/Notre Dame this fall is an example. And those would bring tourists to town.”

The undefeated 1929 Notre Dame football played all of its games on the road while the new ND stadium was being built. They packed them in. My husband’s grandfather was a quarterback on the Notre Dame football during this time.

  13. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Jul 14, 21 @ 4:16 pm:

Mr. Dooley thought a newspapers job was to comfort the afflicted, and afflict the comfortable.

Apparently the Tribune editorial board lost sight of that good advice.

  14. - Moe Berg - Wednesday, Jul 14, 21 @ 4:25 pm:

I couldn’t abide paying money for the Trib when the editorial voice was reflexively anti-Chicago, frequently hysterical and typically self-righteous.

McQueary and Kass offered only venom and rage.

Now that they’re gone, I’ve subscribed. And, thus far have been pleased by the shift in approach and tone.

I’ve no problem with a theater critic heading the ed board. As some guy once said, “all the world’s a stage…”

  15. - ;) - Wednesday, Jul 14, 21 @ 4:29 pm:

The editorial board is trash, but they’re spot on with the ask to remove that hideous bowl and returning the stadium to a monument honoring true heroes.

  16. - DEE - Wednesday, Jul 14, 21 @ 4:30 pm:

I’m a long time Trib subscriber. I read it on Metra every day (one of the few riders and maybe only rider with a paper). I’ve threatened to cancel many times over editorials but their sports section keeps me paying. I have noticed that Huppke’s column seems to be appearing in the editorial section and their posts in the section have moderated to the point I have not ripped up a paper for a long time. I’m hoping it is a permanent change in acknowledgement of Chicago’s demographics and the quest for a better paper, but I also hope Santa is coming at Christmas.

  17. - A Jack - Wednesday, Jul 14, 21 @ 5:27 pm:

A very good editorial. Chicago was and in some instances is an architecturally beautiful city. But what was done to Soldier Field as well as Trump’s substitute for his physical inadequacy are both massive architectural mistakes.

  18. - Original Rambler - Wednesday, Jul 14, 21 @ 6:14 pm:

The Tribune is on probation pending its performance post sale. Still deciding whether to continue (expensive compared to the S-T) my subscription. This editorial, and Clarence Page’s article on NYC and remake the police are good signs.

  19. - Amalia - Wednesday, Jul 14, 21 @ 7:43 pm:

If you have read Chris Jones columns over the pandemic, you’ve seen that he can write…and beautifully….about all sorts of topics. His column on the Premier League clubs and the Super League concept was particularly insightful. He is a broad thinker, a great writer, and seems like a nice guy….he’s answered plenty of emails I have sent through the years and he has zero idea who I am except a subscriber. This editorial is refreshing.
