Today’s quotable

Thursday, Aug 26, 2021 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Center Square

U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Taylorville, said no [school] district should have state or federal funding withheld over a mask policy.

“It’s kind of mafia-esque,” Davis said. “It’s ‘do it my way or we’re going to hold back any funding that you may get from the state of Illinois.’”

* Also Rodney Davis

“The National Children’s Museum is a congressionally chartered museum, but they’re the only one that has to pay rent to the General Services Administration (GSA), which an internal governmental, and you send money in between governmental agencies. They wanted rent from them when they couldn’t be open for the last year and a half. So we made sure we gave him a break on that. But before we did, we made sure we made them take down from their website, any reference to Critical Race Theory and any reference to things that just defy people,” said Davis.

Sounds like he will run against Miller if they put them in the same district.

  2. - Flyin' Elvis'-Utah Chapter - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 9:46 am:

Someone please explain why some think this guy would be a shoe-in for a GOP governor nom?

    ===“It’s kind of mafia-esque,”===

Somehow, having no consequences for breaking the law is mafia-esque. How did that become the Republican reality?

  4. - Pundent - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 9:48 am:

And keep in mind that Davis is shopping for his next gig because he’s considered too “moderate.”

  5. - Give Me A Break - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 9:49 am:

I almost wish he would run for Gov. The ads would just write themselves, that and the pics of him with Trump.

  6. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 9:50 am:

    I don’t think Davis grasps yet…

When a man will likely spend $150 million to a ruinous end of who Davis is and the phony Davis oozes…

… I don’t think Davis has thought out the whole “I can take on a billionaire with a long record… and Trumpkin bonafides too”

Then again, losing to Mary Miller or being drawn into LaHood’s district to keep LaHood busy aren’t great options either.

    Secretary of State?

  7. - Asteroid of Caution - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 9:51 am:

    C’mon. That’s totally different.
    It was him.

  8. - Cheryl44 - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 9:52 am:

My guess is there’s no mention of CRT at a children’s museum.

  9. - So_Ill - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 9:53 am:

Remind me how Rodney voted in Trump’s first impeachment when Trump extorted Ukraine?

    Exactly.

  10. - Name Withheld - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 9:56 am:

How does he feel about Florida - where funding was threatened if districts *implemented* a mask policy.

  11. - walker - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 9:59 am:

They make a great show of removing “Critical Race Theory” from places that never had and never would have such a thing. Hopefully it will disappear when other shiny mythical objects are created for political attack.

  12. - Keyrock - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 10:01 am:

For some reason, the opening line of a Beatles song comes to mind—“I’m a loser, and I’m not what I appear to be.”

  13. - Norseman - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 10:06 am:

No federal or state funding should go to schools that institute policies harmful to children based upon lies and misinformation pushed by a political party for partisan benefit.

Rod, this is about the health of children, not your election prospects.

  14. - Demoralized - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 10:08 am:

I wonder if he feels the same way about Desantis doing the same thing in Florida to schools who mandate masks?

    Dear Republicans:

There’s a pandemic going on. Trying to keep everyone safe. Thanks for continuing to do everything you can to obstruct that goal and for your work on keeping the pandemic going.

  15. - Anon221 - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 10:14 am:

Davis is soon to run out of “hats”…

“All politicians should have 3 hats - one to throw into the ring, one to talk through, and one to pull rabbits out of if elected.” Carl Sandburg

  16. - Bruce( no not him) - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 10:16 am:

Do we call him moderate since he didn’t call them Nazis?

  17. - Club J - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 10:19 am:

That’s funny coming from Rodney Davis. It’s his Father who lived in Springfield and is homesteaded at that residence. Yet he votes in Taylorville out of a little house he owns next to the McDonalds.
You all remember what Rodney said his Dad travels and he stops to rest there before driving the rest of the 30 miles home from his long trip. Yeah mafia forces people to wear a mask.

  18. - Jocko - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 10:38 am:

I’m hoping he can throw in the terms ‘woke’ and ‘politically correct’ to complete my ILGOP bingo card.

  19. - Just Me 2 - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 11:54 am:

Deny funding if you have a mandate (Florida), deny funding if you don’t have a mandate (Illinois). Either way Republicans are mad. They’re just looking for something to complain about.

  20. - Anyone Remember - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 12:19 pm:

===“It’s ‘do it my way or we’re going to hold back any funding that you may get from the state of Illinois.’”===

Isn’t that how the Feds ended the less than 21 alcohol age limit? (Among other things?)

  21. - JS Mill - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 12:33 pm:

=But before we did, we made sure we made them take down from their website, any reference to Critical Race Theory and any reference to things that just defy people,” said Davis.=

So they didn’t have to change their website since none of that existed. But thanks for the fairy tale. I can’t wait for tomorrow’s story time presentation from Rodney.

And ditto on what other have said about the Florida mafia esque stuff. Way to hypocrite Rodney.

  22. - Norseman - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 12:37 pm:

Just last night, I saw the following quote from 1847 in Harold Holz’ book, Lincoln and the Power of the Press:

The New York “Sun protested against ‘the unmitigated abuse heaped upon our country by the colored man …”

The similarity of the above racist trope challenging any discussion of slavery from the mid-19th century and the racist tropes being spewed by Davis and the GOP to pander to the white supremacist elements of the country is sickening. While not new to the party, Davis’ increasing embrace of this tactic proves he’s lost any claim to moderation.

  23. - Primate - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 1:00 pm:

OW, SOS is what he and his Rauner handlers want. They also ran the Kirk campaign and think the same strategy will work again against Alexi.

  24. - Lt Guv - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 1:21 pm:

Rodney, if you want mafia-esque, try death. That’s the penalty the real mafia and the disease lay out.

  25. - LakeCo - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 2:14 pm:

=any reference to things that just defy people=
    Wait…what?

  26. - 47th and Lake Park - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 3:49 pm:

Running for which office enhances Davis’s future salary prospects? The statements that lead this item demonstrate that he has written off winning statewide. Of course, he still might run statewide, if it would lead to landing a cush job somewhere after his defeat. Wanna bet it won’t be in Taylorville? Keep those wheels spinning, Rod old buddy.

  27. - Hon Don Gerard - Thursday, Aug 26, 21 @ 3:59 pm:

I’m looking forward to living in Rep. Nikki Budzinski’s district soon.

  28. - Stuff Happens - Friday, Aug 27, 21 @ 11:24 am:

===”“It’s kind of mafia-esque,” Davis said. “It’s ‘do it my way or we’re going to hold back any funding that you may get from the state of Illinois.’””

Is this the same Rodney Davis who voted yea on “The No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act?”
