Rate the new DGA video on GOP opposition to COVID mitigations

Thursday, Sep 16, 2021 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Press release…

The DGA is launching a new video in Illinois that slams the growing GOP gubernatorial field for their reckless disregard for public safety throughout the pandemic.

While the rest of the field have already gotten a head start, Jesse Sullivan, the newest to join the growing primary, has quickly jumped on the anti-science bandwagon. Sullivan has repeatedly opposed measures to mitigate the spread of COVID, and he’s not the only anti-science Republican in the race. Gary Rabine, Darren Bailey, and Paul Schimpf have all similarly opposed common-sense safety measures.

Sullivan, Rabine, Bailey, and Schimpf have baselessly criticized the leadership of Gov. JB Pritzker, who acted swiftly to protect the health of Illinoisans when the pandemic hit. As Republicans flounder on public safety, Gov. Pritzker is putting Illinois back on a firm fiscal footing to emerge from the pandemic even stronger.

“As Republican primary candidates vie for the support of Trump’s extremist base, they’ve taken to spreading dangerous lies and threatening public safety with their negligence,” said DGA Senior Communications Advisor Christina Amestoy. “The growing primary field is in a full-on race to the far-right, and that means adopting an unpopular anti-science, anti-safety, and anti-Illinois platform that voters will reject at the ballot box.”

I’ve asked whether this is just a YouTube video or if the DGA is putting any money behind it online. My guess from reading lots of releases like this is it’s just a video, but I’ll let you know if I hear back. [I was right. Just a video.]

Reporter: What would you tell people today who are still holding out, who have not been vaccinated?

Gary Rabine: Mandating of this vaccine, of these vaccines, is crazy.

Jesse Sullivan: Mandating and forcing actions is not the way that I would handle things.

Reporter: Today, Bailey says he believes everything in the state should be open — no capacity limits, no restrictions.

Paul Schimpf: I voted against the governor’s mask mandate.

I think it will play well to the Vax crowd and not well to non-vax crowd. In other words, I don’t think it does much either way.

  2. - Commonsense in Illinois - Thursday, Sep 16, 21 @ 1:06 pm:

Meh…the DGA obviously had some cash left over from California.

Nothing new…nothing harmful…actually I think Republican viewers will be happy to see it.

  3. - Anyone Remember - Thursday, Sep 16, 21 @ 1:07 pm:

Enjoyed the prominent display of Greg Bishop …

  4. - Pundent - Thursday, Sep 16, 21 @ 1:18 pm:

I would give it a B. It gets the point across but doesn’t really leave a mark. But I expect it will be one of a string of many videos and ads that build on this theme. Could have been a whole lot better but far from the last one we’ll see.

  5. - Now I'm down in it. - Thursday, Sep 16, 21 @ 1:34 pm:

I don’t get it. Wouldn’t the DGA want one of these people to run against JB? Why now?

  6. - Club J - Thursday, Sep 16, 21 @ 1:37 pm:

I give it a grade of A-. I think it shows that each candidate is a total opposite of Governor Pritzker. It does put Bishop front and center. All it’s missing is Jacobson.

    === not well to non-vax crowd ===

They don’t care. JB isn’t getting their vote. The target is independents worried about their health and that of family. I’d amp up the temp by including more victim footage, especially kids.

  8. - Grandson of Man - Thursday, Sep 16, 21 @ 1:43 pm:

Very good on messaging, an A. Mandates are the right thing to do and the wrong thing to oppose, as the majority probably would agree. It’s the right side of the issue for Pritzker and the wrong side for Republicans, as California likely indicates.

  9. - Frank talks - Thursday, Sep 16, 21 @ 1:55 pm:

The anti-vax crowd is getting smaller.
The polling shows that the pro-mask, in schools, data is over 50%.
Not sure why you would continue down a path that over 50% of the public disagrees with?
It’s a good read by DGA, forces GOP candidates to now stay in that lane until Nov of 22.
The anti-mask/anti-vax crowd is already against JB. The moderates are the key. The 4 candidates are not helping with this position to gain moderate votes.

    It’s a B-

It’s a marker, it lets those fellas know that people are watching, but it’s not something that is going to gin up big support or a call to action.

It is what it is, doing what it’s suppose to do… it’s a marker.

    The quartet of No.

So potential candidate Jesse Sullivan is a Stanford graduate. Did Stanford not teach science and methodology. As his goal is to create millions of jobs, this goal will be impossible to reach when folks are falling out because of Covid-19 and other variants.

Will Sullivan self-fund or make the obligatory stop at Manny’s?

Extra credit for the image of Rabine in a Santa hat.

  13. - Pundent - Thursday, Sep 16, 21 @ 4:37 pm:

=I think Republican viewers will be happy to see it.=

Unless your Tom Devore the goal is to win. There aren’t enough anti-mask/anti-vax Republican voters in this state to win any statewide office.

    Really liked it.
