* Not really my sort of story, but I couldn’t resist…
A Northwest Indiana school corporation is suing its former legal counsel for allegedly advising district officials they could receive additional Indiana tuition support payments by enrolling students who live in Illinois.
In January, the State Board of Accounts demanded the South Newton School Corp. repay $751,907.53 distributed to the district by the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) between 2014 and 2020 to cover the instructional costs for students district officials knew were living in Illinois.
According to the State Board of Accounts, Indiana law permits out-of-state students to attend schools in the Hoosier State, but only if they pay the full cost of their attendance.

We sure DeVore wasn’t their previous counsel?

Well, Indiana IS the state where the House of Representatives passed a bill to set Pi at 3.14 (it died in the Senate). Apparently legal counsel is a descendent of the person who said Pi was 3.14.

Doesn’t sound too educate to assume other states will pay you to take their students.

I am familiar with a couple of students who this related to. The school districts in St Anne/Hopkins Park area are a disaster and I can hardly blame them from jumping the line. At least in some cases, St Anne school district was more than willing to send students there.

Like maybe they’re kids from Indiana who are learning how to be sneaky when hunting on someone else’s property?

In Lewis & Kappes defense, “they” could refer to almost anyone. /S

2 thoughts:
1. Google says that the borders of the South Newton district bump up against the Illinois border.
2. Remember all the conversations we’ve had about other states poaching Illinois college students? Especially Iowa, because they have more college seats than Iowa high school seniors?
I would make the argument that this is the same thing, just with high school kids, not college students, and to our east, not west.
How many people did Indiana lose in the 2020 census? And how much of their population is abandoning the rural areas for cities like Terre Haute or Indianapolis?

Only took them 7 years to figure it out ? Mmm so with federal dollars involved could be a bigger problem than they realize.
