  1. - Blue Dog - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 8:33 am:

    Two illinois congressional districts flipping.

  2. - Tallone - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 8:36 am:

Yup, that’s a good lesson to learn

  3. - NorthsideNoMore - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 8:39 am:

Happy to see the Braves win in 6 (at Houston) if it couldn’t be the Sox. Really glad it wasn’t Dodgers or Boston in series, strong dislike of both but don’t want to be a hater : )

  4. - Downstate - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 8:40 am:

“But you can win an election by telling voters that their imaginary concerns are real”

Attempting to arrest the father that was highlighting the sexual assault of his daughter, and then lying about it, seems pretty real.

  5. - L.A. - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 8:42 am:

Telling parents that Critical Race Theory is being taught to kindergartners seems pretty imaginary

  6. - Captain Obvious - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 8:45 am:

You can dismiss and rationalize a spanking at the polls, but that won’t help you in the next election.

  7. - Glasgow - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 8:47 am:

Did Gov fly commercial to Glasgow or did he fly private?

  8. - SWIL_Voter - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 8:50 am:

This is what all elections are now. Republicans just lying about an imaginary issue they made up, and Dems fumbling around trying to figure out how to respond to it. Caravans didn’t work but critical race theory did. Nothing will ever be resolved in this country because we don’t live in a shared reality

  9. - JS Mill - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 8:51 am:

=Did Gov fly commercial to Glasgow or did he fly private?=

Yes, this is very important to know considering all of the issues at hand. VERY important. /s

  10. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 8:52 am:

The thing about midterm losses, or in this case “one year later”, they are a thing, they are anticipated, what is the measure is “how bad” and “how deep” are these losses.

The NJ Gubernatorial is sti interesting, the NYC mayoral with Sliwa losing, I mean, who had Sliwa winning?

Anger motivates, even if it’s old, angry, white anger with things they don’t even know fully why it angers them.

For Illinois? I have to think candidates matter, and I believe, as I’ve said too many times to mention, Illinois needs two functioning political parties that can understand and feel engaged with the entire state. Republicans need to have quality candidates especially in the suburbs, Dems need to make inroads downstate, and with the new congressional map it allows for those Dem discussions.

A year in politics is like 10 years in civilian life. Both parties here need to engage and expand not shrink, not intensify. That’s not helping, and with new precincts, districts, all will need to see opportunities to build, not preach to the converted.

    “We’ll see”

Jorge Soler is the World Series MVP.

    That’s so Cub.

  12. - Evanston Caller - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 8:54 am:

-Telling parents that Critical Race Theory is being taught to kindergartners seems pretty imaginary -

Evanston is in federal court because a grammar school teacher was forced to separate children by race. Good luck to Evanston and their Title 7 violation. I hope they don’t lose federal funding for their many kids reading below grade level.

Buffalo mayor Byron Brown…Virginia LT Gov Winsome Sears

  14. - Downstate - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 9:00 am:

“They can all get their self esteem back when they spend some time in the shoes of those who they terrorize.”

    That’s a great message for a 2nd grader.
It’s an even better slogan for 2022.
    /s/

  15. - LakeCo - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 9:00 am:

=Evanston is in federal court because a grammar school teacher was forced to separate children by race. Good luck to Evanston and their Title 7 violation. I hope they don’t lose federal funding for their many kids reading below grade level.=

Huh? Evanston is in court because a snowflake got her feelings hurt and filed a frivolous suit.

  16. - Shield - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 9:04 am:

    - Evanston Caller - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 8:54 am:

Maybe the Evanston schools could teach you to read for comprehension. Even the DJT-DeVos administration thought her complaint lacked merit. Guess you couldn’t read that far.

  17. - MOON - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 9:07 am:

    Thank you “Doctor Frumpy”.

I have never heard of a more stupid analysis.

Same. No way was that real.

  19. - up2now - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 9:10 am:

Congratulations to the Atlanta Braves, whose hitting coach is EIU’s own Kevin Seitzer.

  20. - Treefiddy - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 9:16 am:

===Congratulations to the Atlanta Braves, whose hitting coach is EIU’s own Kevin Seitzer.===

And whose manager is Decatur’s own Brian Snitker. Good Illinois representation on the World Champion Braves.

  21. - larry - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 9:17 am:

CRT allegedly began in law schools (faculty of which are roughly as “left” as Diana Rauner’s cocktail party guest lists), and yet I never heard the phrase when I attended one.
I’m open to hearing a definition of what it is from anyone using it as a political cudgel. Seriously, feel free to write out in your own words what it is and how it’s a threat to your children. I know that you can’t.

  22. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 9:17 am:

    === Byron Brown…Winsome Sears===

If you’re merely pointing to the race as disqualifying the overt racism that is permeating within the political lexicon, you may not be sophisticated enough to discuss race and politics.

It’s why I’d love to, and chose as my Illinois pol, discuss things with Everett Dirksen.

The GOP and Dirksen welcomed Dixiecrats after the Civil Rights Act passed, wholly ignored by all it seems that Dirksen and Republicans helped pass the Act.

Maybe all those slamming CRT but can’t define what it is… or why they don’t like it and vote with CRT as a factor… you think race or racism is not existent as a political motivator? That’s unrealistic.

  25. - moving forward - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 9:30 am:

I realize that OW is practically royalty on this blog, but his/her tone and condescension turns this democrat off. the days of driving turnout in your base may be coming to an end, and the democrats may need to return to persuasion (once they figure out a message that they can clearly articulate). Women have swung back, black turnout was down, and i would be interested to see what percentage of the black, latino, LGBTQ vote republicans got yesterday. trump pulled double digits from each of these groups in 2016. while biden defeated trump, trumps is very much alive. the OW’s of the world do not persuade independents, and they may be turning off traditional democratic voters. there is a lot of work to do if the democrats hope to maintain control of congress, let alone hold the seats that the new map was deigned to protect here.

  26. - Your imaginary friend - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 9:31 am:

Gas, food, electricity, heat, and all consumer goods all cost way too much for middle class people to afford. Give the American people some credit. Virginia flipped because Democrats are racing our economy to the bottom through sky high taxes and imaginary Green New Deal bologna. Gas is 3.60 a gallon. What did you think was going to happen? What part of what I’m saying is imaginary? Just because you don’t like the result doesn’t mean there wasn’t a real movement behind what drove it.

  27. - Anon221 - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 9:32 am:

Rich- My apologies. Life gets away from me at times, and I missed it on CapFax. Just sharing it this morning. Sorry for the repeat.

  28. - hisgirlfriday - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 9:36 am:

The Normal-based Unit 5 school district has a tiny sliver of territory in Congerville that goes into Woodford County so some teachers at a Normal school are filing suit against Unit 5 in staunchly conservative Woodford County instead of more moderate McLean County.

I don’t know the specifics of the case but I can guess how the lawsuit filed by a former Woodford County Board member will turn out if it stays in Woodford County.

  29. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 9:38 am:

    ===condescension turns this democrat off===

Everyone’s a critic. Anyone giving an opinion faces the scrutiny of that opinion not being welcomed.

===the OW’s of the world do not persuade independents, and they may be turning off traditional democratic voters.===

So you’re saying be more strident and tribal, more angry less inviting?

I guess losing by losing independents Dems had last time isn’t a “thing”? Huh.

Also, being so tribal in politics makes governing twice as hard.

If that works for you, then Manchin and Sinema must frustrate you even more than any GOPer.

  30. - H-W - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 9:39 am:

Covid booster day, eight months later.

  31. - SuburbanRepublican - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 9:41 am:

Illinois GOP gubernatorial candidates are definitely counting their chickens before they hatch today after the VA results. The GOP had a huge win in VA in 2009 and 2010 was a huge wave for Republicans and yet Pat Quinn still beat a far-right candidate despite Republicans like Dan Rutherford, Judy Baar Topinka, and Mark Kirk winning statewide.

  32. - 1st Ward - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 9:42 am:

“Anger motivates, even if it’s old, angry, white anger with things they don’t even know fully why it angers them.”

Yet the “angry, old whites” also voted in a Black Lt. Gov for the first time in the States history…. Can you come up with some new material? You were wrong with the “fair tax” just like you are wrong on this “hot take”.

  33. - 1st Ward - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 9:46 am:

“So you’re saying be more strident and tribal, more angry less inviting?”

Per AP VoteCast “Youngkin also appeared to make inroads with Latino voters, who closely divided between Youngkin and McAuliffe.” Must be the anger and less inviting causing this….

  34. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 9:50 am:

=== also voted in a Black Lt. Gov for the first time in the States history===

No matter who would have won, a woman of color was going to be the Lt. Governor of the Commonwealth of Virgina.

I know folks don’t like that having an overtly strand of racism in the party makes them feel uncomfortable, but ignoring that isn’t being honest to any victories deemed to show a lack of racial underpinnings.

It’s like thinking Bailey wanting an “Ambassador” an “overseer” of Chicago is mere “word choices”

I know it’s tiring, but making excuses to have racial politics is dangerous too.

  35. - Steve Rogers - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 9:53 am:

And don’t forget Chatham-Glenwood’s Phil Maton and Highland’s Jake Odorizzi pitching for the Astros. Illinois had good representation on both teams.

  36. - Jocko - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 9:55 am:

I read this morning that Kane County health department is expanding hours because of covid boosters. Thank heavens at lease one place in Illinois still believes in science.

  37. - thechampaignlife - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 9:55 am:

You can also win elections by inventing concerns and convincing voters they are real.

  38. - Springfield Sage - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 9:57 am:

    -No matter-

OW is not having a good day. Hope things get better: rainbows and puppies.

  39. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 9:58 am:

===to make inroads with Latino voters===

… as did Trump when he won in 2016, especially in Florida, but are you neglecting looking at CRT and it’s use after McAuliffe states in a debate… “I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.”?

  40. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 10:00 am:

    ===is not having a good day.===

Your concern for me is fun because I’m not too concerned how you feel about my day.

The rent check will be sent, I shouldn’t live rent free in your head.

    :)

  41. - Concerned - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 10:01 am:

If Dems don’t figure out this CRT item (whether it’s real or imaginary), it will continue to hurt them. And the public safety issue will continue to be a problem for Dems. The Progressive City perspective will not win some suburban races…probably enough to give National Dems big problems. Whether it will be enough in Illinois is questionable. Of course there will be other key factors but it will be one.

  42. - 1st Ward - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 10:02 am:

“No matter who would have won, a woman of color was going to be the Lt. Governor of the Commonwealth of Virgina.”

Yet she won the primary per your hot takes over old angry whites against other old angry whites. Way to gaslight on that one.

  43. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 10:05 am:

    ===Yet===

Friend, you want this idea that racists aren’t welcome in the GOP.

They aren’t welcomed, they are courted, and fed racist ideals like CRT to have a base to build upon.

“Some of our best candidates aren’t white”… yet Bailey feels more than comfortable as a candidate for Illinois governor to make race a real thought, and not one GOPer has condemned Bailey’s thoughts publicly. Why do you think that is?

  44. - 1st Ward - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 10:06 am:

“It’s like thinking Bailey wanting an “Ambassador” an “overseer” of Chicago is mere “word choices”

The contrast of imagery this week is not a good look for JB and the Dems though. Bailey was in Moline on the picket lines at Deere supporting workers while JB jettisoned to Europe rubbing elbows with aristocrats and the elites. Not very inspiring and makes for a very good attack ad. No i’m not voting for Bailey but not a good look.

  45. - WestBurbs - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 10:08 am:

I’m concerned that “CRT” will be much harder to deal with than “defund.” How can Dem’s emphasize importance of teaching slavery, civil war, Jim Crow, Plessy, redlining, and the systemic racism thread that ties them together — without embracing Kendi’s “Department of Anti-Racism” and similar overreaches.

  46. - Dankakee - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 10:09 am:

I’ve really enjoyed reading how the overtly racist VA candidate won because the Democratic Party is too left. If, “My kids shall never learn about American racism.” is a new maxim, I don’t know what the message is against that.

  47. - ChrisB - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 10:10 am:

Hopping on the Snitker bandwagon. One Shot at Forever is a great book, and IL-centric.

  48. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 10:12 am:

    ===JB jettisoned to Europe===

If Pritzker brings back union jobs linked to green energy, how will that look?

    Two things I already know, baked in seemingly every midterm;

The party in the White House faces headwinds and challenge to keep loses down, but losses are coming.

A year in politics is like 10 years to civilians, and that could mean ever more bad news for the party holding the White House.

The real issues for the GOP is how they want to be identified within this chance (likely outcome) of wins in the midterm and will that include cultural war framings with really bad candidates like Bailey that could hurt other candidates, better candidates, that can actually win?

  49. - Flat Bed Ford - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 10:12 am:

Keep doing what you are doing Reps Stava-Murray, Yang-Rohr and Costa-Howard. Virginia results should be ignored and no cause for concern. /s

  50. - Cool Papa Bell - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 10:16 am:

  51. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 10:16 am:

===I don’t know what the message is against that.===

Change the subject. It’s not real anyway, as far as K-12 is concerned, and barely real beyond that. The VA governor fed the flames.

  52. - 49th Ward Walker - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 10:16 am:

    -Friend, you want this idea-

OW is the Bill Kristol of the Illinois GOP. A man who ideas and endorsements matter ..

  53. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 10:20 am:

===It’s not real anyway, as far as K-12 is concerned, and barely real beyond that. The VA governor fed the flames.===

When McAuliffe said… “I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.”… it put a bright light where it need not be.

  54. - Al - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 10:21 am:

Dear Owl, how much does your barstool warmer job pay?

  55. - WestBurbs - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 10:22 am:

Rich - the problem with “change the subject” is the risk of alienating those for whom racism is a big or even only issue - and I think there is a significant portion of Dem voters (black, white) that want to hear what Dems are going to do about it. Sure, they won’t vote R but they may stay home.

  56. - 1st Ward - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 10:24 am:

“If Pritzker brings back union jobs linked to green energy, how will that look?”

You aren’t getting the jobs if there is active labor strife. That’s the #1 reason why these companies may not invest in Illinois. Putting the horse before the carriage. This strike has been going on for how many months now? Has JB or his administration attempted to do anything? It’s such a bad look for Illinois especially if they are going to get these battery, solar, and other green energy manufacturing plants and jobs. Yet JB signs pension bills negatively impacting property taxes for all Chicagoans. JB only stands for the donor base not the workers. New Jersey is this close in part due to the hammering the GOP did on property taxes. The Dems are getting hammered on inflation regardless of if its fair a year after Chicago passes a bill linking annual property tax raises to the national CPI.

  57. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 10:26 am:

    1st Ward, you’re so dramatic.

This is a multi-state strike. It’s not just in Illinois.

Also, the strike started a few weeks ago, not months.

  58. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 10:31 am:

=== You aren’t getting the jobs if there is active labor strife. That’s the #1 reason why these companies may not invest in Illinois.===

According to Raunerites it was because Illinois wasn’t Right to Work… and let’s not forget Chicagoland is, again, the #1 location for corporate investment, and further, depending on the incentives, and how Rivian is faring as a case of new manufacturing, it’s important for *any* Illinois governor to court green energy manufacturing.

===Has JB or his administration attempted to do anything? It’s such a bad look for Illinois especially if they are going to get these battery, solar, and other green energy manufacturing plants and jobs.===

What are they not doing that you think needs to be done? Be specific.

===Yet JB signs pension bills negatively impacting property taxes for all Chicagoans. JB only stands for the donor base not the workers.===

The Illinois Policy think to pensions and such is already baked in, that’s not a new variable, and also a tired IPI type talking point as, again, Chicagoland corporate investment leads the nation.

===The Dems are getting hammered on inflation regardless of if its fair a year after Chicago passes a bill linking annual property tax raises to the national CPI.===

If Bailey is the messenger, how do you think that’ll play?

  59. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 10:33 am:

    - Al -

    The adults are talking.

  60. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 10:33 am:

    ===the risk of alienating those===

This ain’t rocket science. You change the subject to something that your side and the target audience actively supports.

Not strong on reading or history? Justin Fairfax, the current LG in Virginia, is the first Black LG there. They also had a Black governor, Doug Wilder, in the early 1990s (elected in 89).

The message isn’t real, but the anger is. White Grievance is and has always been an effective tool to win elections, particularly in the south. But change the message to what exactly? “Joe Manchin and Sinema have completely kneecapped my entire agenda? They’re saying that and it’s not working.

  65. - PopSmoke - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 11:08 am:

OW is cracking me up today, really trying to thread a needle on here. I forgot McAuliffe cannot possibly have “old, angry, white anger” because he is apart of the democratic party so that could not possibly align with that narrative.

I digress, the Virginia Governors race (and NJ for that matter) shine light on national trends that will absolutely have an impact come 2022. I do not believe the current slate of candidates can pull a Youngkin because they either align too far right (looking at you Darren Bailey) and have 0 chance of winning statewide in a general. Some possible winnable GOP candidates that could swing the pendulum based on Illinois and national trends I think could be Rodney Davis, Jason Barickman, and Tom Demmer.

It’s going to be an interesting election year and messaging will be the big indicator of who will win and who will lose.

  66. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 11:12 am:

===I forgot McAuliffe cannot possibly have “old, angry, white anger” because he is apart of the democratic party so that could not possibly align with that narrative.===

The narrative that took the turn was McAuliffe’s education take and parents with CRT. You know that, or it would make sense that it cracks you up.

You are correct, and I’ve been on that train too… this crop of GOP gubernatorial hopefuls are not the vessels to victory for the ILGOP. Some actually hurt the party in the overall.

  67. - Blue Dog - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 11:19 am:

Kinzinger should gear up for a shot at JB. Campaign theme. Lawlessness.

  68. - Rudy’s teeth - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 11:34 am:

Regarding CRT in kindergarten…most of the time is spent on practicing large and small motor skills, introducing shapes and numbers, listening skills, using paints and crayons, holding a pencil or crayon, stories from the Caldecott books list, working puzzles, and music.

Also, let’s add tying shoes, buttoning coats, small and large group work, recognizing circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles, learning to use scissors to cut shapes, upper and lower case alphabet letters, numbers, counting by 2, 5, and 10 and the list goes on…not CRT.

  69. - Al - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 11:37 am:

JB is making himself the State. The State Secret Cannabis pushers are paying a lot more than what is advertised, the $25,000 license fee. We need to investigate payments from these Cannabis to off-shore banks.

As to “I realize that OW is practically royalty”,
no one is royalty on this blog —particularly OW. People disagree with him on issues every single day.
As to your other points, you do raise some discussion points that are worth kicking around. A lot of union folks and other Dems stayed home or voted for Bruce R. and those (IMHO) were two big reasons Governor Quinn lost.

==What national trend comes from New Jersey==

I am not talking specifically about winner v. loser, it’s the margins and polling. Murphy was polling at 11 points if not more just a week ago, in 2017 he won by 13.5 points. That gap has significantly shrunk… margins matter.

== The progressive wing of the Democratic Party looks to be turning independents towards the GOP==

Noted progressives Phil Murphy and Terry McAuliffe are using very real CRT to alienate moderate voters. This stuff is make believe. You guys live in alternate realities. The fact that lots of people join you there doesn’t make it any more real

  79. - Lucky Pierre - Wednesday, Nov 3, 21 @ 3:39 pm:

Sorry to let the facts in a way of a great false narrative but CRT was not an issue whatsoever in New Jersey for Phil Murphy, yet his race was extremely close in a much bluer state than Virginia

Denial is much more than just a River in Egypt

lololol. This coming form a guy who never lets facts get in his way.

===yet his race was extremely close in a much bluer state than Virginia===

We’re ignoring the midterm slide of the party controlling the White House?

The same person who reminds how bad Biden’s numbers are is now ignoring… how bad Biden’s numbers are.

It’s not that - Lucky Pierre - is disingenuous, it’s that - Lucky Pierre -‘s devolution from Rauner apologist to full blown Trumpkin makes misleading information, gaslighting, and projection normal… ignoring their own arguments was baked in for quite some time.

Now when we hear about Biden’s polling it’ll be news to LP, lol
