Question of the day

Friday, Nov 19, 2021 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Another reminder that Ken Griffin has money to burn comes to us from Bloomberg

Citadel Founder Ken Griffin bought a first printing of the U.S. Constitution which sold for a record-setting $43.2 million at a Sotheby’s auction, the auction house announced Friday. […]

Griffin said he will loan the document to Billionaire Alice Walton’s Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.

The artifact carried a presale estimate of $15 million to $20 million and belonged to collector Dorothy Goldman. Her late husband, S. Howard Goldman, had purchased it for $165,000 in 1988.

* The Question: Your most recent major purchase?

=== Your most recent major purchase? ===

    A new fridge/freezer.

===Griffin said he will loan the document to Billionaire Alice Walton’s Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.===

Here I thought he was going to use it to wipe himself.

  2. - The Real Captain - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 2:54 pm:

Dishwasher … they are nearly as hard to find as the Constitution and almost as expensive.

  3. - Very old soil - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 2:55 pm:

Set of tires for my truck.

  4. - Anonymous - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 2:57 pm:

An original printing of the unratified Illinois Constitution of 1922.

Just kidding. A new mattress for the guest bedroom.

  5. - Furtive Look - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 2:59 pm:

Lunch at Old Herald Brewery & Distillery in Collinsville. $75 including tip. I have a pocket copy of the Constitution.

  6. - Perrid - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 2:59 pm:

International vacation like a month ago. Couple thousand total.

  7. - Sangamo Girl - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 3:00 pm:

I still really don’t go anywhere or do anything. So, a bag of cheese curls that wasn’t on the grocery list?

  8. - DuPage - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 3:01 pm:

    Filled gas tank.

  9. - Norseman - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 3:02 pm:

    A motionsense kitchen faucet.

P.S. Kenny, Buying an old version of the Constitution doesn’t help you understand it better than the PDFs you can download. In fact, I use the interactive version from the National Constitution Center.

  10. - Cubs in '16 - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 3:03 pm:

A new stove. This purchase will soon pale in comparison to my daughter’s wedding in March of next year.

  11. - Rusty Shackleford - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 3:03 pm:

Braces. Finally taking care of something that should’ve been taken care of when I was a child, but so it goes.

  12. - Anyone Remember - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 3:06 pm:

Rented a car on vacation. Almost as costly as the air fare.

  13. - Phenomynous - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 3:09 pm:

Filled up my gas tank… $62

  14. - Annonin' - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 3:14 pm:

  15. - dd - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 3:19 pm:

Trip to the grandkids in NC for granddaughter’s fifth birthday; where some self-centered Covid infected household sent their Covid exposed child to school and after care and one surmises did not get him tested or quarantined (child was asymptomatic) until public health contact tracers caught up with them. But then it was too late as my grandson was super-exposed and also asymptomatic so by the time we were notified and all got tested it was too late. Grandma was the only one negative 2 grandkids; 2 parents and Grandpa all tested positive. Pretty sure even the dog got it. Thank goodness grandparents had gotten the booster two weeks prior and parents were vaccinated. Kids were scheduled but now postponed. Everyone made it through with mild symptoms or none at all!
The vaccine works and the booster works even better!

  16. - Rudy’s teeth - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 3:20 pm:

Several packages of smoked salmon at the Jewels.

  17. - 47th Ward - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 3:21 pm:

Wow, Griff could have bought six authentic genuine beaver fur stove-pipe hats possibly (but not likely) worn by Lincoln for that.

I recently started a basement remodel. Already spent $30,000 and still haven’t started on the inside of the basement yet.

  18. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 3:23 pm:

    - Annonin’ -

I too bought golf balls, 2 dozen online, there’s something in the water I suppose.

Major purchase? I bought 2 pairs of dress shoes, it was time. Normally I would go call this a major purchase by the sticker shock for the shoes was present.

  19. - Excitable Boy - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 3:28 pm:

The symbolism of the ultra wealthy purchasing the constitution is pretty great.

No big purchases this year, child’s bedroom set about it.

  20. - OurMagician - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 3:29 pm:

A second printing of the U.S. Constitution for $4.30. Bought it at Wal Mart.

Windows. Not the Bill Gates kind.

  23. - hisgirlfriday - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 3:36 pm:

A new dryer and new car brakes. :(

I like to imagine JB was the second highest bidder all along driving up the price to help drain Ken of some campaign funds.

Also does anyone know if Ken could use a stovepipe hat? Asking for a museum closer than Arkansas.

  24. - Peter Molino - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 3:39 pm:

    A Wilier Triestina bicycle.

  25. - New Day - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 3:39 pm:

  29. - JoanP - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 3:45 pm:

Plane ticket to Japan. I’m supposed to go in late March. The trip has already been cancelled twice, so I am hoping it will actually happen this time.

  31. - RNUG - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 3:55 pm:

This month … (and this will tell some Springfield people who I am but I don’t care anymore) … a very nice 1973 Checker Station Wagon (Rich has seen a photo) … and yes, I also own one of the other Checkers running around Springfield … so now you know.

  32. - RNUG - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 3:58 pm:

    - New Day -

Just be patient. Wife’s used car took 5 weeks to ship back in January. Friend’s new car ordered last year took about 7 months, 6 of which was sitting in a yard at the port of entry.

  33. - Pot calling kettle - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 3:59 pm:

A new well. Not cheap, but the old well is hand dug, brick-lined…not exactly up to code if we ever want to sell the house.

  34. - Honeybear - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 4:02 pm:

I bought a really great couch for 175 bucks on Marketplace. It’s in pristine condition and usually goes for 1600. I couldn’t believe me luck

  35. - Steve Polite - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 4:04 pm:

I recently bought an iPhone 13 to replace my iPhone 6.

  36. - ArchPundit - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 4:06 pm:

A recliner with electronic lift as my wife is having heart surgery next week and I need a new hip. This getting old stuff isn’t fun.

Dinner for the wife and I.

    It is super super sweet.

  39. - clec dcn - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 4:09 pm:

Bought a Gibson L5c acoustic archtop jazz guitar. In another life I am/was a jazz guitarist. You just can pay the rent playing jazz.

  40. - Proud Papa Bear - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 4:10 pm:

My term life insurance expired and I switched to whole. That’s a big chunk I’ll be paying each year.
Just bought an $18 bottle of Jack on a whim.

  41. - clec dcn - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 4:10 pm:

I meant to say you cannot pay the rent.

  42. - Banish Misfortune - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 4:10 pm:

Windows, but I also want a new bike.

  43. - Rich Miller - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 4:11 pm:

    ===pay the rent playing jazz===

Chuck Berry : [after they’ve played I’m Through with Love] Shoulda been a jazz artist, Jack!

Keith Richards : [laughing] No money in it!

  44. - RNUG - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 4:13 pm:

Rich, I didn’t tell you the back story. Originally belonged to Joe Pollard, professional drummer, studio musician, music producer, inventor of the first electric drum, etc. Also toured with the Beach Boys and the Grass Roots back in the 60’s. I knew Joe for about 20 years before he passed away in 2019.

  45. - Rich Miller - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 4:16 pm:

RNUG, you should let me post that pic in comments with the license plate blurred out

  46. - Streator Curmudgeon - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 4:19 pm:

New water heater. Only got 25 years out of the last one. Plumber told me that was a miracle.

  47. - RNUG - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 4:21 pm:

Go ahead. Plate actually doesn’t matter because it was the seller’s plate on it at the time.

  48. - Rich Miller - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 4:27 pm:

  49. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Nov 19, 21 @ 4:31 pm:

That picture, boy that wagon is way-way cool.

    Love it.

  50. - RNUG - Monday, Nov 22, 21 @ 8:46 am:

    -OW- thanks
