* Sen. Darren Bailey was at the Palmer House this week for an Illinois Farm Bureau event. He used the opportunity to stage a TikTok video that reminds me of another politician who rode down an escalator to launch his campaign

Is this your first time on an escalator, Senator?

  2. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 9:23 am:

The escalator will bring Bailey down one floor. His campaign rhetoric will bring him down much further.

  3. - High Socks - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 9:24 am:

Hey! He did the thing the other guy did! Clever.

  4. - NIU Grad - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 9:29 am:

What an absolutely bizarre political movement and moment in our history…

They all want to be just like him. That’s the whole movement.

  5. - Furtive Look - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 9:29 am:

Yes, this is the best I can do.

  6. - Commisar Gritty - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 9:31 am:

It’s just sad, really. Imagine being this reverent and defferent towards such a transparently awful person.

  7. - Down South Dem - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 9:32 am:

Bailey holds tight to his wife as she tries to calm him down. “No honey, the stairs aren’t demon possessed. They’re moving stairs.” Bailey would later claim that you can’t force me to ride, I want to walk down those stairs.

  8. - Honeybear - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 9:34 am:

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little

  9. - Flyin' Elvis'-Utah Chapter - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 9:34 am:

    But it’s not a cult.

    Heck no.

  12. - Inverted Pyramid - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 9:39 am:

    Waving…to no one.

  13. - Watchful eye. - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 9:40 am:

That’s the best holiday present he could give JB Pritzker. In what should otherwise be a great Republican year, Bailey at the top of the ticket ensures the Red wave will be a ripple. FYI Darren- Trump lost Illinois by a million votes twice.

  14. - KnopeWeCan - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 9:40 am:

Incidentally this is the only downward curve Bailey has supported in the last 2 years.

  15. - H-W - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 9:42 am:

I am pretty sure Trump led his wife by six-feet (very symbolic of masculinity, patriarchy).

Mr. Bailey says “take back Illinois.” From whom does he believe he will take Illinois back? The voters? The majority of Illinoisans?

  16. - oifredleg - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 9:44 am:

I’m not inspired by this lack of originality.

  17. - Nobody Sent - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 9:47 am:

Hey Darren - when will the MIGA hats be available?

  18. - vern - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 9:48 am:

Chicago - Gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey has rescinded his plan to delegate Chicago relations after visiting the Palmer House luxury hotel. Bailey, who has co-sponsored a bill to separate Chicago from the rest of Illinois, expressed his shock and delight that the city of nearly 3 million had any kind of pleasant amenity. “I thought it was a war zone,” he said, “but look how this staircase moves on its own.”

The revelation that Chicago may actually be an ok place to live has the potential to upend the long term partisan balance in Illinois. If a 2022 candidate can bring himself to say that Chicago is safe to visit, it’s possible that Republicans may even be willing to try winning Chicagoans’ votes sometime in the next 50 years.

Bailey, however, is thinking more about his short term plans. At press time, he could be seen in the lobby of the Palmer House studying paper maps and muttering “Maxwell Street, Maxwell Street…”

  19. - Cheryl44 - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 9:48 am:

I remember when some cousins came up to the big city to visit. We took them downtown to Marshall Field and they were impressed by the escalators. This was the mid-to-late 1960s and the cousins and I were around 10 years old.

Only took two tries to learn how to ride down an escalator.

  25. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 9:54 am:

    vern wins.

  26. - Rudy’s teeth - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 9:59 am:

Wonder if Darren and the Missus stopped by Miller’s Pub for the lamb plate with spanakopita? Also, a quick tour on the Red Line would be a treat.

Don’t forget to wear your masks on the train.

  27. - Bruce( no not him) - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 10:03 am:

His lips didn’t seem to match the words. What did he really say before the overdubbing?

  28. - Ryan - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 10:13 am:

This is ridiculous. I wonder if he paid for his room with farm subsidies? #itsacult

  29. - Shark Sandwich - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 10:14 am:

    > What did he really say before the overdubbing?

I don’t know, but this video is creepier than Phil Spector.

  30. - Candy Dogood - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 10:16 am:

“Bailey waves to an imaginary crowd after his campaign was forced to distance itself from domestic terrorists.”

  31. - Steve Rogers - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 10:18 am:

Where’s my passport? I’m going to need that to get back to the real Illinois. The Cook County border patrol is pretty strict about proper travel papers.

  32. - Publius - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 10:19 am:

How long will it be before Senator Bailey uses some of those farm subsidies to buy a condo in Chicago and raise money full time. Not much to do on the farm this time of year.

  33. - Jibba - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 10:20 am:

    “It’s…………”

The very long intro reminded me of Monty Python.

  36. - Mutual Disdain - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 10:30 am:

Why does DB always carry himself like a scared, nervous child? He’s got enough ego to fill a grain elevator, but not enough confidence to fill a thimble. What a strange, awkward video.

  37. - Skeptic - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 10:31 am:

” reminded me of Monty Python.” I’d pay to see the foot come down and squash him.

  38. - fs - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 10:34 am:

    Rain Man, Trump, Bailey

An escalator isn’t the only thing those three have in common

  39. - Quizzical - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 10:36 am:

    Very powerful and exciting!

But he’s just not orange enough.

  40. - OneMan - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 10:36 am:

  42. - Chicago Cynic - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 10:48 am:

Senator Bailey testing the adage that plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery.

  43. - Chicago Cynic - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 10:49 am:

Bailey: Same red tie, same small mind.

Flashback to the late 1960s—who is this mope with no suit heading to the Empire Room?

  48. - Moi - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 11:11 am:

Oh, mimicking the other candidate who lost Illinois is a clear telling of how successful his campaign will be.

  49. - Frank talks - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 11:27 am:

Interesting use of Tik Tok, not really exciting or interesting. Not even a text of wait til the end? If your diving into a social media platform designed for younger generations then you need to make it far more appealing. Some background music or some text in the video, something more than riding down an elevator.

Just don’t do the dab move that the California US Senate candidate did during a debate and you should be fine.

  50. - allknowingmasterofraccoondom - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 11:51 am:

Hey! He got 612 likes! Who wants to be 613?

  51. - Ok - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 12:07 pm:

“Wait til the end” has the expected payoff of any tik tok video

  52. - JS Mill - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 1:18 pm:

Darren Bailey, an economic elite who says he wants to oust the elites, emulates an elite.

    All hail hypocrisy.

  53. - Aaa123 - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 1:22 pm:

Bailey later described his new experience as A-MAZING, but stated mechanical stairs were a bunch of nonsense, made for lazy folks.

  54. - Dotnonymous - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 1:41 pm:

Pretty fancy for a wannabe Goobernor.

  55. - Commonsense in Illinois - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 1:43 pm:

Darren…fire the advance guy for not getting a single supporter to show up. Trump pays $50 per person, so if you want to be like The Donald, start shelling out for a professional crowd.

  56. - ArchPundit - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 2:32 pm:

    As the kids say, CRINGE!

==“No honey, the stairs aren’t demon possessed. ”

In the exaggerated Darren Bailey voice this is making me giggle.

  57. - Amalia - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 2:47 pm:

    Deluded Descending Staircase.

  58. - Meechum - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 2:57 pm:

Despite his best efforts to kiss the ring, Trump still has no clue this guy even exists.

  59. - Huh? - Wednesday, Dec 8, 21 @ 3:40 pm:

Almost as fun as a county fair. Golly, a free ride.
