Mary Miller vs. Rodney Davis coverage roundup

Monday, Jan 3, 2022 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Some of us talked about this on Twitter over the weekend…

* Mary Miller then announced that she’ll run against fellow Republican Rodney Davis in the 15th Congressional District…

“President Donald Trump inspired me to run in 2020 because our country needs principled conservatives in Congress who always put America First,” said Congresswoman Miller.

“Today, President Trump is endorsing me because I am a conservative fighter who is not afraid to take on the DC swamp.”

“I am not a career politician, and running for office is not my life’s ambition,” said Miller. “My life is spent in the real world, on my small family farm with my husband Chris, where we were blessed to raise our seven children and welcome our seventeen grandchildren. I bring those values to Washington, not the other way around.”

Elected in 2020 with President Trump’s support as an America First conservative, Congresswoman Mary Miller received 73.4% of the vote in the 15th District. She has been a strong supporter of President Trump and opposed efforts by Nancy Pelosi, Adam Kinzinger, and Liz Cheney to attack President Trump through the political “witch hunt” January 6th Commission.

“I voted against Joe Biden’s red-flag gun confiscation efforts, which violate the Second Amendment rights of American citizens,” said Miller, who has the most conservative voting record of any member from Illinois. “I was endorsed by the NRA in 2020 and I’m the only member from Illinois with an A rating from the Gun Owners of America for always supporting the Second Amendment.”

“I’m proud to be the only member of Congress from Illinois who is fighting to impeach Joe Biden and the lawless Biden Cabinet for leaving our border exposed to an invasion of illegal immigration,” said Miller. “I am the only member from Illinois who has fought every effort by Joe Biden to use COVID vaccine mandates to fire Americans from their jobs and I opposed funding COVID vaccine databases that share information with the federal government.”

As a Pro-Life mother and grandmother, Congresswoman Miller serves as an advocate for the unborn, giving a voice to the voiceless in the womb. “When Democrats pushed for taxpayer-funded chemical abortion, I led the fight to ban taxpayer-funded chemical abortion with the Protecting Life on College Campus Act,” said Miller.

Congresswoman Miller is in a strong position to win re-election in the new 15th Congressional District, which gave President Trump 68 percent of the vote in 2020.

“I won’t allow corrupt Democrats like JB Pritzker to cut backroom deals to draw me out of the district I represent, because conservative voters who stand with President Trump deserve a Pro-Second Amendment, Pro-Life, America First voice in Congress,” said Miller.

“With hard work, prayer, and faith in our country, conservatives will take back the House and Make America Great Again.”

* There were some problems with some of her claims. For instance…

* Anyway, Rep. Davis seemed to be ready for this and fired off a blistering response…

Rodney Davis’ campaign for Congress released the following statement after Mary Miller announced she’s running for Congress in the 15th District. The statement is attributed to Davis campaign spokesperson Aaron DeGroot:

“Mary Miller is only an outsider in the sense that she doesn’t live in the 15th District. She’s a carpetbagger and Chicagoland native. Miller is so desperate to stay in Congress she’s running in a district she doesn’t live in, just like her husband. The Millers are taking a page out of the Springfield political insider playbook. Politics is their family business.

“Even worse, Miller supports the Never Trump ticket for Illinois Governor and refused to vote against Nancy Pelosi’s sham, partisan 1/6 Select Committee. All Mary Miller has to show for her time in Congress is quoting Hitler and voting with Democrats like AOC and the far left squad to defund our military and block a pay raise for our troops. That’s shameful. It’s clear that Mary Miller is all talk, no action.

“Rodney Davis is a conservative who gets things done. He’s already been hard at work highlighting his conservative accomplishments and work with President Trump during his time in office. That’s why he’s earned support from countless grassroots Republican leaders in the district. Our campaign looks forward to educating voters on how Rodney is an effective conservative member of Congress and Mary is not.”

Um, Rodney has been involved in Illinois/US politics most of his adult life. Politics is definitely his business. And what’s he gonna do in the fall if the “Never Trump ticket” of Darren Bailey and Stephanie Trussell wins the primary? One campaign at a time, I suppose.

A “conservative who gets things done” with the endorsement of almost every major elected official in his new district means he’s going to run a traditional Illinois Republican race. He’ll work it hard. She has Trump. Should be interesting to watch.

* News media roundup…

* Controversial Downstate freshman GOP Rep. Mary Miller to primary veteran Republican U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis after Trump endorsement: Davis has already been endorsed by 32 of the 35 GOP county chairmen in the new 15th District, as well as by two of his neighboring Illinois Republican congressional colleagues, Darin LaHood of Peoria and Bost, and more than a dozen GOP state lawmakers in the new district. Davis also has been a strong supporter of Trump and co-chaired his 2020 reelection campaign in Illinois. Davis also has backed House Republican leadership under Kevin McCarthy of California.

* Trump endorses Rep. Mary Miller against Rep. Rodney Davis despite pleas from leadership not to get involved in primary: Miller, a member of the hardline House Freedom Caucus, recently caused a stir within the Republican conference for spreading misinformation about a vaccine records bill and an annual defense policy bill that many House Republicans voted for. As CNN first reported last month, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene — another controversial firebrand who is close with Miller — had been lobbying Trump to throw his weight behind Miller, while House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy had urged Trump not to get involved, concerned it could make things even messier for party leaders.

* Trump endorses Illinois Rep. Mary Miller over Rep. Rodney Davis: Trump’s move comes as he is looking to spark intra-party primaries in order to increase the numbers of Trump-loyal MAGA Republicans in the House in advance of his anticipated 2024 White House comeback bid.

* With Trump Backing, GOP Rep. Mary Miller Challenges Rep. Rodney Davis in Illinois GOP Primary: While members of Congress don’t have to live in the district they represent, Davis of Taylorville raised it as an issue.

* Rep. Mary Miller Congress: With Trump backing, legislator from IL challenges Davis: Miller, known for controversy including quoting Adolf Hitler outside the U.S. Capitol, was first elected in 2020.

While I can’t say I’m a big Rodney Davis fan he’s certainly a better option than Mary Miller, who just another one of those Southern Illinois nut jobs.

==And what’s he gonna do in the fall if the “Never Trump ticket” of Darren Bailey and Stephanie Trussell wins the primary?==

Moreover, if Bailey is the never Trump ticket, who else ya got? Schimpf has tried to distance himself from that mess, Sullivan barely even wanted to take a stand on whether or not everybody should have a Merry Christmas, and the Griffin Gang seems only interested in moving left from Rauner.

If it ain’t Bailey, who’s the MAGA standard bearer?

Davis has already dropped his ‘civility’ guise and is trying to out-Trump Miller. Should be an interesting spring.

I wonder how Miller will fare in Millersburg? (Small town northwest of Aledo in the northwest fringe of the new 15th).

Hopefully both candidates have tons of ad money lined up. The new 15th includes parts of 6 TV markets. Terre Haute, Champaign/Decatur/Springfield, Peoria, St. Louis, Quincy, and the Quad Cities.

  8. - Downstate - Monday, Jan 3, 22 @ 11:24 am:

Davis wins this going away. She’s been making headlines, to be sure. But her advocacy for some core constituencies has been lacking.

  9. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Jan 3, 22 @ 11:27 am:

It’s all fun and games until Trump does an ad or campaigns for Miller.

Davis is a phony to getting to the bottom of the insurrection, and is also a defender of those insurrectionists

Whenever pols talk about governing with prayer I know they are people who don’t accept separation of church and state and will try to cram their religious views down everyone’s throats. They’d be very happy with the principal of “Cuius regio, eius religio.” ( Very loosely meaning if you don’t go to the king’s church we’ll burn you at the stake.)

  16. - Jojo monkey boy - Monday, Jan 3, 22 @ 12:40 pm:

Only Bost and Miller voted NOT to certify the 2020 election results. Davis voted to certify. Easy decision for Trump. Davis needs to consider moving toward center and attempt to save what shred of credibility he has left.

  17. - Ron Burgundy - Monday, Jan 3, 22 @ 12:43 pm:

Should be a fascinating race between “Crazy as I Want to Be” and “Crazy as I Need to Be.” Still give the edge to Davis but anything is possible.

  18. - Stormsw7706 - Monday, Jan 3, 22 @ 12:45 pm:

Due to redistricting I now have these 2 for my choices. I have never be a fan of Davis but Miller is unexplainable as a representative or as a Christian. I will hold my nose, vote in the Republican primary, and pray Davis doesn’t jump off the crazy cliff.

  19. - Annonin' - Monday, Jan 3, 22 @ 12:59 pm:

Wonder what Boss Toss gave the MAGAs to get Miller to go after Rodney. What is Lots would be correct.
And Rodney’s “carpetbager” attack suggests he ain’t got much from Kevin McCarthy to fight back. Should turn SPI GOPies on the their heads before this is over — if it is.

  20. - NonAFSCMEStateEmployeeFromChatham - Monday, Jan 3, 22 @ 1:05 pm:

==I hope she is growing popcorn on that federally-subsidized farm she runs==

I wonder how much crops and produce grown on Miller’s federally subsidized farm was used at the Davis family’s McDonald’s restaurants.

  21. - Thomas Paine - Monday, Jan 3, 22 @ 1:47 pm:

No one is gonna care about Mary Miller’s crop subsidies in the primary. The GOP does hypocrisy better than anyone when it comes to government handouts.

The bottom line is Rodney Davis is 83% Trump while Mary Miller is 100% Trump, and in a safe GOP district that is 110% Trump, there is no reason for any GOP interest group to cross swords with Trump and come to Davis’s rescue.

Rodney Davis backed Ted Cruz and opposed Trump’s presidency back in 2016, and while he might have come around in the end, Miller is gonna have an easy time making the case that Rodney is no true believer, and she is gonna raise more than enough money online to do it.

There is so much of the district where no one has heard of Rodney, he is in deep trouble.

  22. - Say What? - Monday, Jan 3, 22 @ 1:53 pm:

Truth is irrelevant to Mary Miller. She is a Tier 1 nut job.

Davis response indicates he is willing to bury her by fighting fire with fire. Good. Extinguishing her from politics is a good thing.

Worse than being an ill informed, constituent service lacking knucklehead; she consistently spews hate that she pretends to wrap in Christianity. A bottom feeder of the worst order.

Crush her Rodney. Run up the score.

The Tea Party rolls on…straight towards the unavoidable ditch.

  24. - Jibba - Monday, Jan 3, 22 @ 2:16 pm:

Davis has spent 8 years telling everybody he is a bipartisan moderate. For his sake, I hope that not too many of his future voters actually believed that baloney.

  25. - Anon221 - Monday, Jan 3, 22 @ 2:45 pm:

If the “land grant” of the 15th District in the remap process to Davis falls into Miller’s hands, will the Dems then find a challenger for that district? Maybe the Dems are OK with Davis holding all that territory, but are they with Miller? Davis won’t be able to out-MAGA Miller in debates or in social media, and he may not be able to at the ballot box either based on some of the new territory he gained in the remap. Either Dems are going to have to come up with a good candidate for that district, or Dems might have to pull a Republican ticket in the primary to keep Miller’s vote total down. I hate being this pessimistic, and I wouldn’t vote for either Davis or Miller anyway, but the 2016 election proves that the worst can happen when you aren’t prepared.

  26. - Dotnonymous - Monday, Jan 3, 22 @ 3:11 pm:

    Candy Dogood…for the rimshot.

  27. - NonAFSCMEStateEmployeeFromChatham - Monday, Jan 3, 22 @ 3:23 pm:

==will the Dems then find a challenger for that district==

Despite the email “scandal” that forced him to resign as Ag Secretary, could John Sullivan (Rushville) be a possible Dem challenger in the new 15th? And perhaps the only candidate from western Illinois in the new district? He knew how to win for over a decade while State Senator in an increasingly GOP district.

  28. - 47th and Lake Park - Monday, Jan 3, 22 @ 4:10 pm:

But Sullivan won pre-Trump. It’s a whole new ballgame now.

  29. - The Old Man - Monday, Jan 3, 22 @ 4:22 pm:

I am a 77 year old conservative republican who has NEVER VOTED for a democrat in my entire life. If Mary Miller is the GOP candidate for Congress, I will vote Democratic from the top of the ticket to the bottom of the ticket.

  30. - zatoichi - Monday, Jan 3, 22 @ 5:10 pm:

Miller is pretty quick to list the items she voted against which tend to be national. What bill has she developed or voted for that brought financial support or benefit to the district she represents?

  31. - Dotnonymous - Monday, Jan 3, 22 @ 7:10 pm:

I can’t wait to hear/see the debate…it’s gonna be savage good…further and further we go…down that Rabbit’s Hole…Beware when spiders grow hungry and food is scarce.

Is it weird enough yet, Rich?

  32. - Lynn S. - Monday, Jan 3, 22 @ 11:43 pm:

    @Stormsw7706:

“I will…pray Davis doesn’t jump off the crazy cliff.”

    Um…yeah… about that…

I’ve had the displeasure of having “Where’s Rodney?” as my Congress critter for several years now.

The boy is a weasel, and from past experience I can assure you “Where’s Rodney?” will say or do whatever he feels is necessary to win.

There isn’t a sewer too deep or too disgusting to drag the voters through, and he’ll jump off as many crazy cliffs as he can — height will absolutely not be a deterrent– in order to win.

Stock up on migraine medication; you’re going to need it, especially once the tv and radio commercials start.

Stockpile popcorn and brown liquors. Both will be in high demand and exceptionally short supply during the primary season.

    Don’t say you haven’t been warned…

  33. - CharlesEcho - Tuesday, Jan 4, 22 @ 8:54 am:

Quick to call Miller a carpetbagger, coming from a campaign spokesperson representing a man who majored in political science from Iowa. There are thirty-five quotes that may be attributed to hitler. Political in nature those quotes are often paraphrased by politicians to make a point, and not attributed. Usually in the negative. Learn from the past, or repeat the past.

“Hitler was right on one thing. He said, ‘Whoever has the youth has the future.’ Our children are being propagandised.”

I wonder whether a lot of that propagandizing of children that Mary is referring to is occurring at Full Armor Christian Academy?
