Sen. Rezin announces reelection, so Sullivan is still looking for running mate

Wednesday, Jan 26, 2022 - Posted by Rich Miller

* As subscribers know, Republican gubernatorial candidate Jesse Sullivan has been trying to convince Sen. Sue Rezin to run as his lt. governor candidate. Rezin’s decision to run for reelection means that Sullivan still can’t pass petitions almost two weeks after the truncated circulation season has begun…

Today, State Senator Sue Rezin announced her campaign for re-election to the State Senate to continue to work with the families of the 38th District to fight for their needs at the Illinois statehouse.

“My team and I are focused on promoting legislation that will support law enforcement and mental health organizations, and will increase public safety and lower taxes in our neighborhoods and around the state,” Sen. Rezin said. “After speaking with countless constituents, business leaders, and elected officials in our district, I believe there is still more work to do together, and I am honored by the support of my campaign to continue to represent this amazing community.”

…Adding… I’m kinda pressed for time right now, so let’s make this into the Question of the Day: Who should Jesse Sullivan choose as his running mate? Explain.

Well, back to the Jesse Sullivan short list go his campaign’s hired guns.

  2. - Nickname - Wednesday, Jan 26, 22 @ 2:47 pm:

Kind of a crappy thing to do to Jesse Sullivan. Ouch!

  3. - well... - Wednesday, Jan 26, 22 @ 2:49 pm:

Maybe he can find a way to circulate petitions on the blockchain.

  4. - Not again - Wednesday, Jan 26, 22 @ 2:50 pm:

Don’t fret diamond hands, though after all the gym tours it’s wild you still can’t find anyone to run with you.

  5. - Whew - Wednesday, Jan 26, 22 @ 2:55 pm:

Good call by Senator Rezin. She’s a great legislator. Would have hated to see her career end as a Lt. Gov sidecar to a guy who’s going to get 4% in a Republican primary.

Me. My platfomr for the most meaningless job in Illinois: If elected, I will refuse compensation. I will not hire a staff. In the event of death or impeachment of the Governor, I will resign.

  8. - SuburbanRepublican - Wednesday, Jan 26, 22 @ 3:00 pm:

He should select a female business leader. That way he can run an “outsider” campaign against those who have been in the system. Someone with the business chops and possibly some civic engagement background.

  9. - Second Chance - Wednesday, Jan 26, 22 @ 3:01 pm:

I am going to guess he will pick a running primate and start the search with some of the more expensive Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs. It would be the true start of web 4.0, governance by jpg.

  10. - Pundent - Wednesday, Jan 26, 22 @ 3:02 pm:

I know he has a few bucks behind him, but it’s hard to see a clear path forward for Sullivan. He seems to now be positioned somewhere between Irvin and Bailey/Rabine. And that’s a narrow band of the GOP. And if he wasn’t compelling enough to draw Ken Griffin’s attention his backers might make note of that and set their sights elsewhere.

  20. - someonehastosayit - Wednesday, Jan 26, 22 @ 3:18 pm:

If Sullivan wanted real traction in the GOP primary, he’d be begging Jeanne Ives to run with him. I’m not saying she’d go for it but Ives would gain Sullivan inroads downstate.

    A veteran.

  22. - Arsenal - Wednesday, Jan 26, 22 @ 3:19 pm:

This development is just as well. Rezin would’ve given Sullivan some credibility that he does not deserve.

  23. - Pot calling kettle - Wednesday, Jan 26, 22 @ 3:20 pm:

Bruce Rauner - He has money and name recognition and executive experience. (He would need to register an Illinois address.)

OW - He would get the Sullivan campaign on the right track with policy and messaging and start rebuilding the Illinois GOP.

    1. The Menard County sheriff. They already have shot the video footage of them together from the most recent commercial.

    2. Evelyn Sanguinetti. She can add some experience to the ticket.

    3. Paul Vallas. He could be desperate enough for relevance to do it.

    4. Erika Harold? Maybe she’s bored?

===Who should Jesse Sullivan choose as his running mate?===

Some nice young republican who has never held office and no one has ever heard of would be the most appropriate candidate for their Lt. Governor spot. I’m not sure how appealing it is for anyone that I would suggest might like to run for Lt. Governor to be on the ticket with someone who is a political novice. Why risk your own political capital, clout, reputation, or even just undeveloped potential by tying yourself to an unknown that was able to get a handful of people to throw what most people consider a life changing amount of money behind him.

Seems quite a good fit for Jesse, then…..

  44. - vern - Wednesday, Jan 26, 22 @ 4:43 pm:

My serious answer is that he should find some right-libertarian twenty-something former frat bro with a decent sounding job in the Loop. A young lawyer, management consultant or future c-suite tenant whose politics and aesthetic come primarily from Barstool Sports. I have no idea if it would work, but Irvin is gonna wipe him out of the suburban moderate lane so he’s gotta get some votes somewhere. Might as well try to convince some inactive voters who are gonna make six figures their entire lives to start voting in Republican primaries.

That said, here’s my joke short list:
    Richard Boykin
    Jim Gardiner
    Neal Sales-Griffin
    Rickey Hendon
    Mark Shaw

  47. - Candy Dogood - Wednesday, Jan 26, 22 @ 4:59 pm:

Even Salina Meyers won a state wide office.

  48. - MyTwoCents - Wednesday, Jan 26, 22 @ 5:12 pm:

Jesse Sullivan really is a great example of learning to walk before running. All these ads don’t matter one iota if you don’t have a running mate or if you don’t find one in enough time to gather enough signatures to get on the ballot. As to the question, his only path (narrow that it may be) would be to get a more conservative suburbanite who could potentially help him garner conservative and suburban votes. Who that is, who would also want the gig, I have no idea.

I may be crazy, but I have a funny feeling that if the SOS race continues to tighten further, Quinn will swoop in saying “Here I Come to Save the Day” and announce he’s launching a last-ditch run.

==How’s about switching gears and running for US Senate?==

Or forget the statewide run, move somewhere out in Piper Glen, Panther Creek, or along the lake, and then announce he’s challenging Jim Langfelder for Springfield mayor next spring.

    Snark of course.

If Rezin is out, she posted a pic of her eating a bowl of Mac and cheese the other night.

  60. - Frank talks - Wednesday, Jan 26, 22 @ 10:04 pm:

Tony McCombie legislative experience, conservative credentials, won’t need talking point training-can stay on message, plays to the base could probably get a few colleagues to endorse their run.

I’m guessing if they were talking to Rezin they may have been talking to her as well?

  61. - Oldtimer - Wednesday, Jan 26, 22 @ 10:23 pm:

Tom Shafer is probably still available.

  62. - NonAFSCMEStateEmployeeFromChatham - Thursday, Jan 27, 22 @ 4:56 am:

==Tom Shafer is probably still available.==

Are you talking about the Tom Shafer from Springfield who always calls in to local talk radio (e.g., Madonia’s show, most of the WMAY local shows)? And had longshot school board candidacies the last few years?

Or the Tom Shafer that worked at least in the early part of the Blago admin?

  63. - Galway Bay - Thursday, Jan 27, 22 @ 5:31 am:

Patty Bellock. Smart. Respected. Suburban woman. Knows Medicaid which is a huge budget issue.

  64. - Oldtimer - Thursday, Jan 27, 22 @ 5:54 am:

The first Shafer, who has run for Alderman, School Board, LLCC trustee, and possibly others I’ve forgot, was my suggestion, A Central Illinois power ticket, Menard and Sangamon.

  65. - OneMan - Thursday, Jan 27, 22 @ 8:34 am:

Mostly I’d just like a new representative.
