I can’t help but associate St. Patrick’s Day with former Springfield Mayor Tim Davlin RIP. We were dear friends and seeing him walking in the parade with his green attire and that big smile. That is a memory I’ll happily hold on to forever.
Annual corned beef and cabbage meal at church and then home to (re)watch the Quite Man.

On Madonia’s show this morning on 1450, Sam asked a caller who may have been close friend of Davlin what the former mayor would probably be doing today if he was still with us. The caller said “he probably would have started at Darcy’s Pint and ended at Corner Pub.”
Marching with my high school band in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on STATE STREET in the early 1970s and having our costumed school mascot hand Mayor Daley (the original) a bottle of horseradish. I believe he accepted the gift.
I always remember getting ready for the parade each year, but then my memory starts to get fuzzy. Can’t quite remember how the day ended or why my mouth tastes like puke, but I’m pretty sure I had a good time.
Chased through an alley in downtown Chicago, by a female police officer, on a horse. She was on the horse. I was running. A teenager at the time, 1970s or ‘80s. Friends and I were at the parade, and drinking beer. I was relieving myself.
Late to the post, but a story I can’t resist posting. As a young attorney, new to Illinois, I scheduled a motion for 3/17. Opposing counsel, an assistant AG I’d always gotten along with fine, called me up and just screamed at me. Turns out, at least in the Hartigan days, that all the assistant AGs had to be on St Patrick’s Day duty making the rounds of all the bars and weren’t available for silly things like court calls.
