Having it both ways

* Jim Stahly Jr. at WGLT…
Sullivan described his candidacy as a calling from God, and he said he believed the key to solving the states problems was deepening our relationship with God. He says he doesn’t seek endorsements from politicians, but would rather receive support from law enforcement.
* Press release…
This weekend, Jesse Sullivan and Kathleen Murphy received the coveted endorsement of the Lake County Republicans, the third largest county in the state. The Lake County Republican Central Committee endorsed the Sullivan / Murphy ticket on the first ballot, with a convincing 68% of the vote.
Jesse Sullivan released the following statement in response:
“I am honored by the support and the trust placed in me by the Lake County Republicans, as we continue to spread our positive conservative outsider message throughout the state,” Sullivan said. “We are building an incredible coalition of families, taxpayers, law enforcement, parents, and concerned citizens who are ready for a change – and that’s exactly what we’re going to deliver. We’re going to build on this momentum all the way to November, when we Save Illinois from J.B. Pritzker and corrupt insiders!”

I really like how they separate out law enforcement in this response. Notice how none of the other coalition members are identified by their career choice; just law enforcement. It says something, but I can’t fully form the sentence in a way that doesn’t get me banished from the blog, so I’ll just comment about how interesting it is…

Don’t care for any of the GOP candidates for one reason or another, but Sullivan is the only one who gives me a straight out greasy, con man vibe.

I suspect the Lake County Republican Party doesn’t actually move that many votes (tho what do I know about it), but when you put this together with Rabine getting some collar county organization enodrsements, too, you can start to see why Irvin is broadening his attack beyond just Bailey.

I really wish when candidates did this they would start getting more specific about what exactly that means. We live in a world where the Methodists are formally splitting up with each other over whether or not they want their organization to be one of hatred and bigotry decorated with a cross or something that furthers Christ’s ministry.
When this kind of statement is made people tend to assume that it means — their god — ignoring that among the Abrahamic faiths there are so, so, so many factions, denominations, and unique perspectives. It seems to me that Jesse probably is worshiping a version of God that drives out and murders Mormans rather than one that loves neighbors, protects the meek, and rejects worldly wealth.
But these kinds of statements should not be left unquestioned because of how vague of a statement this is. Is he calling for a crusade or is he talking about clemency for criminals?
I feel like I already know the answer, but it would be nice to have him be required to expand on his view that the state should be limiting the rights of others that don’t agree with his religious views.

Does a calling from G-d == a mission from G-d?

“But, I will take them as long as cash is included.” /S kinda

Does it help his case if the endorsement was delivered in Zion?

Another politician with a “save(you)” complex.
- Oswego Willy - Monday, May 2, 22 @ 9:59 am:
It’s performance art at this point, the consultants are now grifting off the cryptocurrency grift Sullivan that was likely what this campaign was originally about.
Sullivan, both ways, it’s about who can make what off of a campaign designed to highlight hot button grifting issues.

Sullivan did say he doesn’t want endorsements from “politicians” but after the last 4 years there aren’t that many politicians left in the Lake County Republican Party. Not exactly a flattering defense for everyone involved, but that’s life when your county party totally collapses.

- deepening our relationship with God. -
As an atheist I’m pretty skeptical of this plan. Let’s deepen our relationship with math instead.

In the Blues Brothers, Jim Belushi and Dan Akroyd were on a “Mission from God”. They were funny where as Sullivan is just slimy and scary.

Elmer Gantry?

Sounds like someone knows something about Zion in Lake County.
As to the initial post, the God stuff approach may hurt as much as it may help in the GOP primary, but like it or not it is who Sullivan is and has been part of his campaign pitch from day one.
Winning the Lake County Republican endorsement seems like a very positive thing for Sullivan and an indication regarding Team Irvin’s campaign that it doesn’t have it’s act together.

Um, no. You entirely missed their point.
- Back to the Future - Monday, May 2, 22 @ 10:42 am:
Might have missed their point.
I was thinking about Zion’s interesting religious history. The initial church that was established in that community by immigrants is still active.
- Sir Reel - Monday, May 2, 22 @ 10:42 am:
So “Lake County Republicans” = God. News to me.

So he’s pro-immigration, fully funding social services, and free healthcare…to be paid using the Fair Tax amendment?
- Osborne Smith III - Monday, May 2, 22 @ 11:00 am:
I would say that we need to stop pretending that Jesse Sullivan is a legitimate candidate, but when you have 37 candidates in the field, all it takes is a plurality to win. Yuck.
- Oswego Willy - Monday, May 2, 22 @ 11:23 am:
My take on *any* endorsements;
Never back yourself in a corner where you can’t either accept an endorsement or rule out endorsements.
When amateurish campaigns decide “we don’t want endorsements” as a thing, its more damaging than having it both ways, its a campaign not grasping a fundamental of “addition not subtraction” when building your own coalition.
Sullivan’s campaign lacks so many fundamental touchstones, be it message, money, even endorsements. It’s not even as bad as a “prisoner of the moment” simple, the campaign lacks a foundation outside the silly buzzwords flitting about “God”, no substance, and then throw in Stolen Valor…
- Ginhouse Tommy - Monday, May 2, 22 @ 11:35 am:
this is off the subject but has anybody seen his latest campaign? It looks like it was written by a 5th grader.
- Huh? - Monday, May 2, 22 @ 12:06 pm:
“candidacy as a calling from God, and he said he believed the key to solving the states problems was deepening our relationship with God”
I cannot begin to describe how offensive and repulsive this statement is to me.
- Rudy’s teeth - Monday, May 2, 22 @ 12:56 pm:
On Sullivan’s twitter…lists DoD in his bio. Really, Jesse, is honest a godly quality.
Remove DoD and replace with civilian contractor.
- Charles Wright - Monday, May 2, 22 @ 4:19 pm:
Jesse Sullivan wins both the Wheeling Township and the Lake County Republican Endorsements with roughly 70% margins. These are both significant orgs as Republican organizations go. Maybe the folks up north paying attention are seeing something the keyboard snark brigade is missing?
- Oswego Willy - Monday, May 2, 22 @ 4:22 pm:
===the keyboard snark brigade===
Ignoring stolen valor or a Californian cryptocurrency grifter which invoked “God” as his reason for the running… significant or not, the cult needs its Saints and Sinners…
If Sullivan takes votes away from The Apostle Darren Bailey and it helps Irvin, that’s a good day for the non-cultists GOP.

The GOD that I worship does not care if you a D or an R. HE cares that we care about each other, do not believe he has seen much of this in this race except for Paul Schimpf.
